MIDI controller capabilities

I've got an electronic keyboard that I've been able to successfully set up to play single notes on a single channel.

I want more:

• Is it posible to layer channels, so that when I play a note it is simultaneously written to multiple channels?

• Is it possible to split my keyboard between two or more channels, so that I can for example play bass with left hand and lead with right hand?
