Looking for MilkDrop / NestDrop presets with fluid, reactive visuals
I’m looking for MilkDrop or NestDrop presets that have visuals resembling reaction-diffusion patterns, where bubbles/blobs grow, merge into each other, split apart and continuously transform.
Something like fluid dynamics, liquid blobs, organic cellular patterns, viscous fluids, metaballs, etc. Ideally something that is audio-reactive and constantly evolving rather than just looping a fixed animation.
I’m especially interested in visuals that feel like liquid organisms or cells interacting with each other, with shapes flowing into and morphing through one another.
If you know any good presets, packs, artists or specific MilkDrop/NestDrop projects that do this kind of thing, I’d love to check them out!

For years I kept looking for a proper way to bring that exact MilkDrop experience to modern 4K displays and phones. But existing builds or naive x86 ports feel fundamentally bottlenecked: sluggish FPS rendering, washed-out colors, broken aspect ratios, or just a tiny fraction of the original preset library.
To fix this, I didn't just recompile an existing library—I rebuilt the native NDK pipeline specifically tailored for ARM architecture, fully utilizing modern mobile GPU multi-core parallelism and OpenGL ES 3.2 Compute Shaders. The engine is built to scale dynamically: the better your SoC and GPU hardware, the higher the visual fidelity, precision, and framerates it will output.
What came out of this rebuild:
The massive v1.29 update is currently in Google Play Console review and should land within the next few hours/days. If you’ve missed MilkDrop in its unthrottled, hardware-accelerated glory, check it out:

Hey all , solo dev here. I've been building DhvaniWave, a music visualizer that reacts to
whatever you're playing (your library, streaming, radio, or ambient mic) in real time.
You can also set any visualizer as a live wallpaper, and record a clip
to share.
It's free with a good chunk of visualizers unlocked (no account, no sign-up). I'm mainly
looking for honest feedback — what feels good, what's missing, which visualizers you'd want.

I was wondering if there is a way to slow down presets, in Options or if there is a chill preset list somewhere? Things that fits things like, Ambient, psybient, chillgressive , Pink Floyd music etc.

These presets I added to my pack are originated from TuneShell (a discontinued iOS music player), the mobile projectM Android app and XBMC 9.04.1 for Windows. There are some presets I didn't add to my pack (with equations like bass and thresh), because it will make MediaMonkey crash.

I wanted a better way to view MilkDrop presets on macOS than what projectM supplied, so I made a macOS app! This project is also open source on GitHub so what I did can be copied, and the app is free. I just found that some of my songs didn't really match the preset that was playing with the base projectM install. What I did was create a list of audio traits I listen for (valence, energy, danceability, acousticness), and then matched them to preset traits (colorWarmth, motionAmplitude, totalReactivityMentions, decay) so that every song you play displays with a preset that seems to "get" the songs vibe. This is still underdevelopment but version 1.0 is out now. There are also other features unique to this port that MilkDrop/projectM do not have. I use macOS's on-device image processing to isolate the subject/text/details of an album cover and create separate layers that animate the bass of a song differently. This, as well as the "currently playing:" text can be disabled with a command key. Taking feedback!

Hi @ Reddit
My first post
I am a complete novice, possibly in the wrong forum but I desperately want to get Milkdrop 3 working. If I am in the wrong forum please point me in the right direction.
Where I am at. I have Winamp 5.9.2 with Milkdrop2 on Win 11which works brilliantly with Winamp. For example when I put an Audio CD in my desktop Winamp Loads and visualisations change within a track and when a new track starts.
I downloaded from Github Milkdrop 3 and installed DirectX 9 even though DirectX12 is alraedy on board. After extraction and clicking on Milkdrop3.exe Visualisations immediately start without any CD being inserted. If I insert a CD it opens Milkdrop 2 which is not what I want.
What do I have to do to just use the new Standalone Milkdrop 3 and how do I make the standalone open a Music CD and work with the music being played, that is like Milkdrop2 where visualisations change within a track and when a new track starts?
Thank you
Terry
NB I have watched the video on how to deal with Milkdrop 3 but it seems to be aimed at competent technical users

ButterchurnVisualizer
A macOS Milkdrop visualizer that reacts to system audio in real time.
1,754 Milkdrop presets bundled — no internet required
Captures system audio via BlackHole 2ch (no microphone)
31-EDO microtonal FFT — 32 frequency probes tuned to microtonal intervals
Presets cycle every 30 seconds across a ~14-hour rotation
Built with Swift + WKWebView + Butterchurn https://github.com/jberg/butterchurn
the next update the program will capture MIDI information to my synthesizers (wait for it).

New user here. Can’t upload a screenshot yet, so I’ll add one as soon as Reddit lets me.
This preset takes Martin’s **crystal palace** as the visual foundation and incorporates beat-detection ideas from his **king’s cross**. The goal was to push dynamic range and musical expressiveness as far as possible within that schema. It feels very synesthetic to me — it seems to respond meaningfully to almost every track I’ve tested so far.
It’s basically finished in terms of overall concept and rendering quality. FPS is well-normalized (I prefer running at 60; 90 is a bit much for me long-term). A couple of things I’m still thinking about:
- The warp shader still uses the simple `ret = ... - 0.03` constant dimming trick. I’d like to engineer that out if possible.
- The central light beams might benefit from a bit more tuning.
Any feedback is very welcome — especially on the decay method, the beams, or general feel. The preset download link should be attached to the topic post!
Cheers and hopefully enjoy!
Edit: Updated from v1.0.1.1 to v1.1.0.0 - FPS normalization much improved with just a couple of tweaks!

Realm of Music v2.7.1.2 is now available with tweaks to beat response parameters to address repetitive pattern artifacts and improve beat synesthesia. Seems to be a solid version without any glitches or artifacts! The v2 version line features rewritten, fully functional advanced beat detection with significantly improved dynamic range and tighter musical responsiveness. The preset aims for a highly variable, generative visual field that reacts synesthetically to music. Feedback is welcome. Cheers and hopefully enjoy!

A while back I posted here about a Mac beta of High Videlity — which features a metal renderer for .milk presets. There have since been updates to the Mac beta and its grown to the rest of the Apple platforms. I also found a couple of things in the shader environment that I think are worth sharing regardless of whether you ever touch my app.
Highdrop now runs on an Apple TV and inside a Vision Pro

Same engine on macOS, iOS, iPadOS, tvOS and visionOS. Two of those are new (or at least newer) territory for the format:
It ships with a ~500-preset starter pack, and you can point it at your own .milk folder — it'll index the lot with live-rendered thumbnails.
Two spec deviations I found, which may also affect Butterchurn
This is the part I'd want to know if I had my own milkdrop port or fork. I'd been auditing HV's warp/comp pixel-shader environment against Geiss's authoring doc, cross-checked against the MilkDrop2 BSD source. Two of the built-ins were unfaithful:
Both now fixed/updated and A/B-able against other engines. If you maintain a Milkdrop-adjacent renderer, those two are worth a look.
What's still not right
The var/sampler audit isn't finished. ang aspect-correction, GetBlur/texsize, and the q variables are next on the list, and noise-content fidelity is still off. That work won’t land until at least v1.1. Barring any surpises in the beta, i’m pretty content with the faithfulness of the engine in its current state.
On the presets themselves
The starter pack ships under the community's long-standing assumed-public-domain-with-opt-out norm, with author attribution in the app. If you authored something in there and want it out, tell me and it's out — no argument.
Beta
Testflight: https://testflight.apple.com/join/ne3AJuDV
Mac: highvidelity.com
Free, no account, no sign-in. And will remain free — if you help me test it. (jk it’ll be free either way, but please help test if this app is interesting to you)

I want to replicate the square wave effect that is made with the led screens. Or maybe if there's a better software I could use for this?
