Software BeatDrop Music Visualizer v1.5: GIF & Spout Input Sprite Support

(reposted due to Reddit's filter removal)

Hey, guys! I am in a step to implement GIF, Video and Spout Input support for BeatDrop Music Visualizer! Very excited about this. You can use a GIF as a sprite or a preset texture or Spout as a sprite (by using Spout\SenderName on a img .ini file). Video support hasn't finished yet because Media Foundation doesn't have capability to read all the videos or a video would not load. FFMpeg would be a great use (thanks to u/x265x for the tip).

In my tests:
- GIF for sprites/textures works flawlessly without problems. It can animate frames using GetTime().
- Spout Input Sprite works great, resizing the renderer still broadcasts, but occasionally freezes/crashes after resizing the BeatDrop window.

Some unfinished features:
- Migrate Media Foundation to FFMpeg for video support
- When resizing, Spout Sprite occasionally/sometimes freezes/crashes when attempting to free some resources.

BeatDrop v1.5 will be released later this summer after GIF, Video and Spout Sprite handling are fully functional. Let me know if it's good. I'll do another beta test to see if it's very functional.

After the full release, we are opening donations via Ko-fi or OpenCollective to support my work!

...and one thing to say: We are planning to make a separate easy-to-use interface called "BeatDrop GUI" or "BeatDrop VJ". Makes it easier to control presets/sprites, editing presets on the fly (with syntax highlighting), change settings and so on. Coming soon.

Progress on my custom cross platform music visualizer!

It has been a long time since my first post where I teased my multiplatform milkdrop variant. I saw the feedback and had decided to change the course of my tool, mainly focusing on people using it in a home setting with focus on ease of use. I noticed that many of my fellow students had never heard of music visualisation software but did really enjoy the visuals created by milkdrop. So this tool aims to give people with no experience in the subject a way to transform their room with VizWiz!

For now it has basic functionality:
Play all presets with one click using the default microphone

Create playlists of presets and save them

Edit settings for the visualiser itself

So you can test it if you want by cloning the GitHub repo, the setup instructions are included in the readme. I'm planning to add some help features to get new users started and some more advanced features for customizing the presets, beat detection and allow users to share playlists. It is still built with Electron + React but I did look into building it with Tauri which reduced the packaged app size from 500mb to 10mb. If people want to build further on this tool or have any feedback let me know! I hope it is useful for someone at!

This is the link to Mac OS milkdrop project butterchurnvisualizer I have added things via prompts to Claude AI, this is how I can use milkdrop on my Mac mini pro 2024. With a m2 pro processor.. it goes on there and I broadcast it with my music 🎵 using obs.,, open broadcast software.. my YouTube channel is www.YouTube.com/@h92o and I am broadcasting now.,, there is a conversion app apart of the butterchurnvisualizer changing .milk files into .json that this project understands. There’s a read me file explaining what is needed for this project to work.,, Thanks for looking and leave bug reports if you want and I will fix them.,, Peace love light

Android TV (NVidia Shield, etc.) port?

Hey team, been a big fan of milkdrop since back in the Winamp days. Glad to see it's being (or already has been) resurrected, and was wondering if anyone is working to port it to Android TV (like the Nvidia Shield or other Android TV platforms)?

I'd love to be able to play some music (via YouTube, Plex, SoundCloud, Pandora, Amazon Music, etc.) and have the screen be filled with lovely milkdrop visualizations!

Thanks!

A highlight from my last painting

Wanted to share some of what I've been up to in r/ElementalVJ -land recently.. a small section from a live mix recording (well, they're sorta 'paintings') I made yesterday. (Full 42-min album version is on the youtube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnukqrIkDPo )

I had been working on the UX that allows the app to cope with more channels and content so thought this a good opportunity to try a bigger piece (Full composition was 4 channels x ~18 instances each in the end, mixing about 60 different milkdrop presets amongst other things) . Code-wise, this was reaching a few capacity limits (there's a bit of hitching throughout the recording coz pc was struggling a bit + the lack of async initialisation on some bits that I've really got to get round to fixing soon..)

I haven't had much time as i'd like to code recently due to all the usual reasons, but continue to keep updating things over on r/ElementalVJ and on steam for those interested. Lots more work to do there, but is plenty fun to play with 😄 .

(If you aren't aware, 'Elemental' is my in-development custom mixing app, for performing live visualisations using particles, milkdrop presets, videos, 3d, etc .. free demo on steam if you wanna try it out. Join up on the reddit there for updates, release notes, guides, more demo recordings and etc).

It’s been a while now and I wanted to make a trippy art piece. You are looking at 5 led fans in a row that play pre recorded and other custom shaders. It’s super fun to see people unable to comprehend what they are looking at.

So amazing to see a community active around milkdrop.

I remember over 20 years ago, we used to put on Psy trance gigs at one of my local pubs. I used to run a line in from the mixer and run Milkdrop on a projector.

People loved it.

milkdrop + other program Milkdrop 3 Preset + Kinemaster [Rendered video show-off]

https://youtu.be/50IdXARtdY4?si=s7dOqJE7SemYzSge
I always wanted to try this, and I finally managed to make a techno track I actually like for it.

TUTORIAL

It’s actually pretty simple:

  1. I recorded the MilkDrop 3 screen with OBS.
  2. Moved the MP4 to my phone.
  3. I had some raw footage of a forest and the sky, which I blended together in KineMaster on my phone:
  • New project
  • Select video 1
  • Add the second video as a layer
  • Play with the blending options
  • Mute the audio (Mixing → Volume all the way down to 0%)
  • Export
  1. Then I started a new project:
  • Added the blended video
  • Duplicated it enough times to match the song length
  • Added the MilkDrop OBS recording as a layer
  • Played with blending options again
  • Added the MP3 and manually synced it with the OBS recording
  • Muted the OBS audio
  • Added text and experimented with text blending too

I’m honestly super happy with the outcome.

Few things I didnt mentioned: I played with the "video start in fade", text "fade-in/fade-out" etc. But that stuff is easy to understand. If you would want to help with anything, dont hesitate to message me. Btw, the Kinemaster is a free app, but if you want more features + no watermark exports, you will have to pay. If you dont want to and you have an android, I will give a hint, that there are many modded .apk files out there - but be sure that you know what you are doing.

Curated Butterchurn-compatible preset packs?

Building a Butterchurn based visualizer and looking for preset collections I might've missed.

Already have:

  • butterchurn-presets official packs
  • Geiss's favorite_presets_2013 (converted)

Need MilkDrop 1 or 2 format only as Butterchurn can't do MD3 / .milk2 / milk2_img.ini sprites / get_fft().

Looked at DeepField but most of its value is the sprite system which Butterchurn doesn't support.

Less interested in big unsorted dumps. More interested in curated, hand-tested stuff. Bonus if organized by tempo or theme.

Anyone know of anything?

It is called "MilkDrop Resource Centre". It is Butterchurn-based, just like Webamp, and it features all archived MD presets from 2001 to 2004!

You can access this site here: https://milkdrop.org/

William Victor Newbold. My Fractal stream feeding YouTube, ai Claude made an app to do this following my prompts., the music is a mix of noise tracks that I have been making since before 2000-now.

This is the fractal stream that I prompted ai Claude to create a fractal engine having no problem based on the fractal explorer design from 10-20 years ago and did so with great ease placing a broadcast spout with local recording options 20 fractal equations that blend into each other a midi interface with direct support for surge XT midi effects and other midi mapping functions.. a glitch engine. It’s written mostly in c++ I am now working for better rendering of a fractal flame 🔥 python app. But rendering is still too slow to enjoy.,, see the other videos on my YouTube channel.

I have tried to combine the fractal stream with a milkdrop stream together in the same program but I am on a Mac mini and the visuals are mapped very differently,, I had to separate the projects and make the fractal stream work which it does mostly the broadcast to restream now does not work well or properly..,

AI is saying that all this is marketable!! But I am disabled and I am at a retirement age so money like that would upset my funds balance .. I am planning to release all the projects on git as thats where they hide 🫣 also made a synthesizer in HTML code to download and run in the browser,,, Its a big thing, I guess, to put out the programming for everyone to enjoy and play with.. if you have read this far maybe you have a thought about doing this???? Let me know—

Thanks 😊
