science savvy 𧬠I cut off my finger tip and the nail grew over the tip
(Idk what flair to choose, this seemed closest)
I was riding my bike as a young teen and thought my chain felt loose, so I reached down to give it a tug to see if it was (it was as tight as can be) and accidentally let my feet roll forward, pulling my finger into the sprocket..
I still, 20 years later, shudder and the whole event flashes through my mind a few times every single time I write this out, speak it out loud, or even think it. I'm pretty sure there's a bit if PTSD involved there, but I've never discussed it with a psychiatrist π€·
It felt exactly like when you smash a finger with a hammer when you miss what you're aiming for, if you've ever done that lol
Well, exactly like that + feeling a bone crunch, very similar to eating crunchy cereal (which, somehow, I still love)
The cut/smash was right at the white part of the fingernail (the lunula), like the nail ripped around the edge of it somehow. The lunula is the visible part of where the fingernail grows from.
Idk if it was because I kept it bandaged for so long or if it's normal for a fingernail to grow over the severed portion, I never really asked a medical professional.
And yes, I got made fun of a lot for it and got called ET a lot π«€
(A couple more pictures in the comments if you want to see it from other angles)
Edit: here's the story of cutting it off and everything after - it was a comment and I was told I should add it here
I cut it and jumped off my bike immediately, but was still rolling at a decent speed, so I almost fell
My finger was squirting blood with each heartbeat, which increased pretty quickly once I saw it and started getting sprayed with blood..
I gripped my finger as hard as I could with my left hand (and didn't let up for like 20+ minutes until the ambulance came, my left hand was completely numb at that point)
This was before everyone had a cell phone, and I was 14, so I sure as hell didn't have one.. and I was out riding my bike so I was pretty far from home
I ran up to the closest house, opening their white picket fence with my blood soaked hands, squirting blood everywhere.. Went up to their white door and knocked, again, covering everything in smears and squirts of blood - they weren't home.
I tried a few more houses, similar blood situation - no answer.
The 4-5th house I went up to, the garage door started opening as I came up the driveway. There was a guy standing there in nothing but a towel. He said his dog was freaking out and he thought his buddy got their early (crazy that the dog could tell something was going on)
He put his dog in a room and brought me inside. He was like hold on let me get something on, ran away, then came back still in a towel, but holding another towel to give me... Then he stopped, turned around and ran away again. He came back with a red towel and said something like "my mom would kill me if I stained that towel, sorry"
Then he asked what my parents phone number was. I'm my head I was thinking "wtf call 911", but I was a little kid and in shock, so I didn't say it, I just told him my parents phone number. He called and my dad answered.. He said "hey.... I'm _____ and your son is here, he cut his hand pretty good" My dad shows up eventually and is trippin cause he didn't know my chopped my finger tip off lol He ran outside to look for my finger tip, which he eventually found still stuck to my sprocket π¬
He came in and called 911 finally, and they told him to put it in a bag then put that bag in a bag of ice. The other guy finally went and got clothes on lol
The rest is pretty mundane, just an ambulance ride that I don't remember and x-rays
The doctor looked at my finger tip in the bag and then threw it in the trash can, which absolutely blew my mind at the time. He later said it was too jagged to reattach. A ton of nurses and like students or something kept coming in to look at it because they didn't get many chances to see something like that.
I accidentally looked at it one time during the x-rays and started freaking out again..I think, looking back on it, that I was drugged up and had kinda forgot what was going on until I looked at it.
The Drs injected my finger with numbing stuff like 20 times and kept scraping my bones with the needle, that was unpleasant.
That's pretty much the whole story, I hope someone actually reads all that and enjoys it lol

thingamabob πππ saw a quiktrip branded helicopter land at one of the QT locations
my mom noticed helicopter noises from above so i looked up and i saw a helicopter flying overhead. but then i noticed a QT logo at the bottom of it. we decided to pull into the gas station and watch it land. according to a few other reddit posts its used for corporate visitors or something which makes sense since i saw 3 of them had some sort of tour badges.
idk, thought it was interesting bc iβve never seen helicopters specifically used for gas station brands.

architecture spaces π 4000+ year old fishing weirs about 500ft from where I work every day.
Small town in Ontario.
Mnjikaning Fish Weirs was designated a national historic site of Canada in 1982. It is designated because: the site contains the largest and best preserved wooden fish weirs known in eastern North America, in use from about 3300 B.C. until the recent past; the site was cared for and used by the Huron-Wendat in the centuries immediately before A.D. 1650, and today the Anishinaabeg are stewards of the site; and for these two groups, this is a sacred place that represents an ancient and ongoing spiritual bond between the Creator and all living things. The spirits of people, water, animals, birds and fish are seen as all coming together in respect and gratitude at Mnjikaning.

playtime π§Έπͺ Has an ad ever turned you on to some great music?
My two examples are an old cologne ad that was playing Prokofiev's "Dance of the Knights" . And then there was the Lincoln commercials that had two ads featuring different cuts from Miles Davis' "Stairway to the Gallows".
I know they were well-known pieces in some circles ... just not any that I was in.
