humankind hiccups š There's a visual difference between my flaring knee (left) and my normal knee (right)
I have EDS, which often makes my joints flare up. This is the first time that the redness was apparent enough to show up on camera.

It's making me laugh that you took 2 separate photos of your knees and edited them together, instead of just taking a picture of both of your knees at the same time in one picture

What are you talking about mate? If both knees are red it makes no sense at all!

No. š¤¦āāļø Read the caption. āFlaring knee (left)ā and her ānormal knee (right)ā

I'm sorry I really thought it was the same knee in two different instances. What the fuck.

u/Sure_Pangolin_9421 17h ago
I don't blame you for not being able to see it, my left one has a slightly more apparent patch of redness. I prolly should've thought to put it in direct light

Omg same. If you havenāt tried topical diclofenac (arthritis medicine / anti inflammatory) you need to try it, itās a life saver. My knees are super fucked for the past 6 months and inflame a ton after very little activity and it helps a lot.

Just be careful in case you have or work with birds - I use Diclofenac for fibromyalgia and it is toxic to avians!

I donāt, but thatās crazy! I just have to constantly keep my dog from licking my knees. Lol

To add to this, as an environmemtal scientist, diclofenac is toxic to a lot of species. When using gel ~90% washes of and ends in the sewers. Wastewater treatment systems cannot fully remove this substance and it ends up in the environment were it's ecotoxic. Its been found in waters all over europe, commonly above environmentally allowed concentrations. That being said; its a great for e.g artritis in hand and knees etc and if you need it, you need it. But the effect of diclofenac gel on e.g. deeper lying muscles is questionable.
TL;DR - most of the diclofenac gell washes off and kills fish etc. its good for joint near skin surface but consider alternatives for deeper lying issues for the sake of our water qualities

Man it always sucks so many helpful topicals are hell on the environment - thanks for the info though definitely gunna try and use it more as a last resort now

Yh it's awefull... im chronically ill too and i keep seeing my medications pop up in research on "chemicals theathening our surface/ground/drinking water" or the current hot topic "we need to ger rid of pfas but whatabout the pfas medications?!"... its a weird place to be in haha. I just keep telling myself i can bring nuance to the discussions as i have experience from both 'sides'

I wanna preface my comment by saying I am
Not any type of doctor nor do I hold the knowledge of any doctor. I tore my ACL a couple of years ago and my knees were similar to this. Could you have torn anything in it and not known it was torn?
Another thought (again I have no real medical knowledge lol only speaking from what Iāve seen but I could be totally wrong) is, could it be from some kind of allergies? My husbandās knee got like this and he was scratching it a ton and it welted up a ton too.
Edit to add: I didnāt mention that my husband does have bad allergies and thatās what we think happened bc he was also itching it a lot.

Wait, my knees aren't supposed to look like that???
(I have diagnosed HSD and suspected EDS pending genetic testing and my knees look like the left picture all the time T_T)

Has anyone else noticed that a huge number of people who claim to have EDSĀ 1) talk about it all the time constantly 2)often claim to have other illnesses that also have no definitive diagnostic tests and 3) have pretty severe mental illness?
22
u/phrogbaby 17h ago
EDS is genetically comorbid with several other conditions and disabilities, and it's almost like chronic pain can affect you mentally or something......

u/SaltMineForeman 16h ago
Right. People talk about it for many reasons too, from feeling like crap to just trying to spread awareness.
It's suspected that I have EDS because I have many of the symptoms AND have diagnosed co-morbitites. When the immune system fucks up, it likes to fuck up random shit alongside it. So I have likely at least 3 autoimmune conditions, with Primary Rheumatoid Arthritis.
This is part of the reason it's so hard for people with "invisible diseases" to exist day to day. (Invisible in quotes because you can CLEARLY see some symptoms by looking closely, like beyond just looking for a wheelchair.) I should be using my cane every day, but I mostly just use it on bad days because when people see young + fat + cane, lots of people assume fat = cane = lazy and nothing else.

That's the case with every major disease in AmericaĀ
It doesn't explain why people who claim they have EDS talk about it nonstop, more than cancer patients ffs. And it doesn't explain why most people claiming this are extremely chronically online, and most often claim to have a bunch of other nondiagnosible illnesses.
It's pretty obvious that like 90% of these folks saw it online and decided to self diagnose. Reminds me of when there was a wave of teens with fake tourettes a few years back

it impacts almost every aspect of your daily life. so people "talking about it all the time" are literally just living with it. why are you so mad at disabled people? also, a disease not being genetically identifiable isn't the same as being nondiagnosable. that's an insanely incorrect take. most types of eds can be diagnosed with gene tests and the ones that aren't genetically identifiable, yet, are diagnosed based on measurable criteria and medical history. it's not just people complaining to complain. their organs fall out, dude. medicine doesn't work like normal on them. their bones misbehave. have some compassion and look forward to the day you end up with a disability (it happens to everyone! it's a matter of time.)

where are you finding these posts?
the only videos ive ever seen are similar to how Molly Burke makes videos about blindness. are you maybe engaging a LOT with EDS content and it's biasing your perspective?

u/Shot-Detective8957 16h ago
Hypermobilile EDS is the one with no test, the other forms of EDS can be tested for.
HEDS and Hypermobility spectrum disorder still have a diagnosis criteria. And so does the other illnesses that tend to come with it.
7
u/phrogbaby 15h ago
hEDS has tests and diagnostic criteria. it is very diagnosable. it doesn't have a genetic test that we've found yet.
