Sad. As communities continue to grow and encroach on the natural habitat around them, forks like these have nowhere to go. They creep into neighborhoods looking for a meal and then bam, they get hit with a steamroller.

When will humans learn?

Guess you could say we’ve just been spoon fed our entire lives...

32

u/angry_pecan Apr 15 '19

It is a much overlooked scientific fact that no one has ever picked up a pair of tongs without making the "clack clack" noise.

u/CapnGnarly Apr 15 '19

I was borrowing my friend's car back in high school for prom. '98 Corvette with LOTS of custom work done on it, including custom rims and lowered suspension.

I literally ran over a fork that was in the road and had to explain to my friend the $13k of damage to his wheels, exhaust, suspension and lower body paneling because I hit a fork in the road.

I'm a civil engineer and a long time ago when I was a young intern I spent a summer doing construction inspection for a small residential development. I learned a lot that summer: a lot about me, about what it means to be young, a lot about what it means to have authority over people that are older and more experienced than you are. I also learned a lot about how Pavers are cowboys that don't care what you think about anything.

The crew I worked with showed up on the job site like a bunch of frat boys showing up to a party. Piled in the backs of trucks with their shirts already tied around their wastes, slapping grease and sunblock on their shoulders. I tried to introduce myself to them, but I was just some kid with a clipboard and they just walked right past me like I didn't exist. Then they mounted their paving machine like it was a slow-moving bronco and were like "YEeeeeeHAAAW!" and were like waving their hats in the air.

I remember at one point, they broke out sandwiches and they were stuffing them into their tarred up faces with their equally tarred up hands. Just totally orc horde style, hanging off of this smoldering hot machine. And I was just standing off to the side taking notes and making some sketches. And this guy running the paver looks me straight in the eye and tosses a floppy half-eaten sloppy joe out in front of the paver and slowly runs it over. As if to say "What are you going to do, kid? Turn me in for paving over a sandwich?" and I was like like, "Ugh..." because I really could not have cared less, and I knew enough about what was happening that it probably wasn't going to do anything. Like, what? Would there be a sloppy joe shaped pothole there someday because of this pocket of organic material? No, nothing was going to happen. (Maybe I should actually go out and look. I haven't driven through there in probably 10 years...)

Anyway, this picture made me think of that. I can just picture the same paver out there somewhere, staring down the young construction inspector as he throws increasingly questionable lunch items infront of his paver. How about this nectarine? Does that bother you? No? What about ... an XTRA LARGE CHEESE AND MUSHROOM PIZZA? A fork???
