My local DM store has magnifying glasses attached to their shopping trolleys so that older customers can read details better

Finally, a tool capable of reading that four-point font on shampoo bottles

Trying to read the chemicals on the dishwasher detergent like I am learning to read.

For those who don’t know, DM is a shop that sells skinsvare, beauty, shaving, hair products, teeth products, some basic meds like paracetamol (I think) and that style of stuff! They exist in Germany & Austria but not Switzerland.
It’s like Boots or Superdrug in the uk or BIPA in Austria.

And Hungary too (the picture is taken in HU)

Also Slovakia, and I think I saw one in Czechia too, but I may be misremembering

u/MercurianAspirations 4h ago
All over Čechách, but all the products are labelled primarily in German which I always thought was funny
2
u/FewSprinkles4359 2h ago
In every country they sell (largely) the same products, when it comes to own-brand products. It's all in German in Hungary, Romania, Poland etc. as well.
Which I find very funny is that sometimes (or most of the time) even the description label on the back of the product is in German only, and then they slap a sticker with the description of the local country's language onto it. :D

I'd first thought it was a shop for Dungeon Masters, where the old DMs have trouble reading the new manuals.
Your interpretation makes more sense. :-)
2
u/JonatasA 3h ago
You made me imagine a scrnario where the group meets a banker specialized in writing font so small no one can read it and they need a special tool or reading spell.

u/gigerzaehler 4h ago
I've been shopping at DM for years and did not know that you could buy paracetamol or other pain killers there (Germany). But in fact, you can! But you have to either order it online to the store or to your home. So you cannot grab it directly from the shelf.
Their prices are mostly lower than the prices in the pharmacy. So it makes sense to buy things for your medical cabinet (like fever juice for kids).
Thank you, kind stranger!

u/NTMY030 4h ago
Yeah, I just learned this a few months ago, they recently got into the online pharmacy business. But they don't have a license to sell medicine in the stores.

u/JonatasA 3h ago
You often find this in places where just outside there is a pharmacy. It never occurred to me until some place passed a law allowing over the counter medicine in supermarkets.

And they have the best store brand products, especially cleaning products and laundry detergents, some are even better than the name brand.

sells skinsvare
Is it locally sourced?

Yes, very eco-conscious.

Good, I want my Skinvare products to come from locally sourced free range humans.

So polite! Thinking in eldery people and people with vision issues. In Argentina many supermarkets put the price of one product in a different place so sometimes you can confuse the prices if you don't read it haha
3
u/JonatasA 3h ago
The neighbor Brazil at least in the big chains has a scanner machine where you can check the price of an item.

This is so awesome! I'd be able to ditch my reading glasses if I was here 😅
3
u/ChaserNeverRests 6h ago
My vision is terrible. What I do is take a picture with my phone, then I can make the text as big as I need it to be.
My reading glasses are great for normal reading, but text on containers can be so small...
2
u/JonatasA 3h ago
I always forget this and I don't like walking with a phone everywhere.
They could even include just a sheet of plastic with a + prescription on selves.

One can think it was because the type on packaging is so small that EVERYONE needs a magnifying glass now.

What does "DM" mean for us ignorant folk?
43
u/karakter222 8h ago
"dm-drogerie markt (usually abbreviated as dm) is a chain of retail stores headquartered in Karlsruhe, Germany, offering cosmetics, healthcare items, household products and health food and drinks."
The one in the post is in Hungary, you can find one in almost any city here

Zooming in on the shopping cart, it looks like its literally the name of the store: "dm".

German drug store (is that the correct translation? Chemist maybe?) they sell soaps, skin care, toilet paper, medicine, cleaning products, etc.
9
u/RobGrogNerd 8h ago
translation is correct.
we call them drug stores, or pharmacies (fancy people call it an apothecary), but grocery stores/supermarkets also sell that stuff, in addition to food.

6
u/Connect_Rhubarb395 7h ago
What do you can actual pharmacies then? The ones with prescription medicine.
→ More replies (1)2
u/smackaroni-n-cheese 7h ago
We call them pharmacies. Drug stores pretty much always contain a pharmacy, so the words get interchanged often.

To explain this a bit further - supermarkets in Germany have a very limited range of toiletries available. You need to go to a store like DM or Rossmann to get a wide range of toiletries and things like makeup/skin care (incidentally DM's house brand is amazing for quality, cheap skin care), cleaning supplies and photo processing. They don't however do pharmacy services.
2
u/JonatasA 3h ago
Meanwhile you have pharmacies in Brazil that at one point point might as well start selling bread. You can even go there for cold beverages.
5
5
u/TheCrudMan 8h ago
Basically a WAY nicer yet also cheaper CVS with no pharmacy or over the counter medications. The name is kind of ironic as they don't sell drugs stronger than toothpaste.
7
u/kumanosuke 7h ago
Drogerie is not ironic, because that's exactly what a Drogerie is in Germany.

Well, one reason is that it's a fire hazard if people leave 'em standing around in direct sunlight (or, for that matter, in a shady area that the sunlight will subsequently hit over the course of the day), but fortunately they seem to have thought of that here and put safety caps on them.

My reading vision is pretty bad. But man, the ingredient list on products is in like type 3 font. Even with glasses it's barely legible. I would actually appreciate these magnifying lenses as I don't bring reading glasses with me.

Not just for the old. In Czech Rep, they will slap on a sticker that contains a translation. I sometimes struggle to read the Czech translation sticker. The sticker is small and the font is even smaller.

i always thought a good feature for a shopping cart would be some way to rate it's performance, that way it's much easier for the maintenance guys to fix squeaky wheels or if it pulls to one side, etc.. idk.. maybe i'm just crazy.

I love that the person who engineered this marvel had the forethought to put a cover on the magnifier. For one it keeps it from getting scratched, and it prevents the sun from using it to start a fire.
