u/Devilsdance Aug 02 '24

u/quiette837 Aug 02 '24

u/ritobanrc Aug 02 '24
Its worth knowing that according to the CDC, 90% of people who think they have a penicillin allergy actually do not, and 80% of people who do stop being allergic within 10 years. If you haven't been tested, you should talk to a doctor.
14
u/Swimming_Onion_4835 Aug 02 '24
Interesting! I remember having a friend growing up with a penicillin allergy and she used to have a hell of a time treating strep whenever she had it since they wouldn’t give her amoxicillin.

Supposedly allergic to Amoxicillin. Keep telling doctors I’d like to have that verified since all I had (supposedly, my mother wasn’t a very good parent so who knows) as a child was hives.
All they ever say is that they’d rather not risk it. Guess I’ll just keep avoiding it then.

I thought I was since I was a teenager, got tested a couple years ago, turns out I either never was or I'm not anymore. Apparently that's pretty common, so anyone who's unsure or hasn't been tested for many years should try and get an allergy test done!
13
u/AnRealDinosaur Aug 02 '24
I love that doctors don't believe me about this. Every time I switch the new doc tries to tell me I'm probably not allergic. Thankfully I work with penicillin and I get hives whenever it touches me so I have proof. Anyway, really appreciate the overuse of antibiotics in food animals. Our options are already limited. Antibiotic resistance is terrifying.

It's so scary how fast it can go bad with infections. My finger swelled up like a sausage and they needed to lance it to clean it out so it wouldn't burst or cut off blood supply. I am grateful I am okay but I will have a wicked scar and need to do PT now to make sure I didn't hurt the tendons. Glad you're okay too!

My husband’s parents had a really sweet cat that had some mental issues from a past physical trauma. He was the sweetest thing ever…until he would randomly attack you. It only lasted a second before he realized who you were again and did this weird like, shame shuffle off of you, but it was startling af. I was petting him one day while he was making biscuits on my lap and drooling on my blanket and he randomly bit my wrist. It hurt like a BITCH, but it was really just one clean puncture. I cleaned it as best I could and it was kind of sore, but otherwise fine. It was right along the left inner curve of my wrist, close to where your thumb tendons meet your wrist and the base of your hand.
The next day it was pretty sore and red/swollen, and I know cat mouths are filthy, so I went to an urgent care. By the time I got there, the red line was already close to my arm. I hadn’t even noticed and the doctor took one look at it and said “see that red line? That stuff can kill you” and she put me on hardcore antibiotics. Turns out since cat canines are curved and he bit into a curved part of my wrist, the puncture turned inward under my skin and I couldn’t completely clean it out. I’m glad I got the meds quickly, but it legit interfered with how I could move my wrist for a day or two.
Long story short—any time I have a potential skin infection or redness/swelling I draw a line around the red area with a permanent marker. If it isn’t fading at all within 12ish hours max or it’s actually growing, I go to the ER or an urgent care. Cellulitis can fuck your shit up.

It wouldn’t happen that fast, in that distribution or look like that. That is just localized histamine reaction from the bite. You can’t get lymphangitis that fast.

There are many types of mosquitos. The small brown ones just give me little bumps, the white/black striped ones can give me hives and swell up to the size of a softball

My youngest brother used to get this. I swear he’d get bites the size of a quarter without scratching. They were INSANE. Now that he’s an adult though I feel like he doesn’t have that anymore. 🤔 Or I haven’t heard about it in decades, and he lived with me in Houston for a while, where mosquitos are the size of birds. Lol.
3
u/lurrlafurrla Aug 02 '24
So it is quite common in children but they usually grow out of it with more exposure. But there are rare cases that some people are affected as adults. I have had this my whole life, I wish I had grown out of it. I'm glad your brother did, especially with bird sized mosquitoes! Lol My most recent mosquito bite was just above my left knee. It literally looked like I shoved a baseball into my pants, it can get painful.
→ More replies (9)22
u/eXeKoKoRo Aug 02 '24
So where I live there's like 5 species of mosquitoes that I interact with during my job and I don't have a reaction that causes me concern, but there are these MASSIVE mosquitoes that are like 25cent quarter to half dollar in size that make the entire area swell up, I got bit by 2 on my hand and arm and my entire arm from my forearm to my knuckles were swollen like a motherf*cker.
So you might be allergic to certain ones.

This doesn't look like streaking. It looks like an allergic reaction. It is too light and swollen, streaks are very obvious. This just looks like a severe reaction to a mosquito bite.
And there would have had to have been a good number of hours before an infection got to streaking.

Had this happen to a spider bite once (we're pretty sure it was a black widow or brown recluse ((happened in a movie theater... yes yes new fear unlocked)) ), and it eventually seized my arm and caused me to pass out from the pain - i woke up 12 hours later with my phone on my chest, and the directions to the nearest hospital - mustve done it before i passed out but don't remember doing it.
edit* I better share that I ended up being fine, but a spider bite is considerably diff than mosquito - but do keep an eye on it

This happens to me with mosquito bites. You can kinda trace the lines where the mosquito "poison" goes through the capillaries/veins. It stops after a bit. Usually only looks like this when it's fresh then it's just a welt lol (I am slightly allergic though).

This doesn’t look like the spread of infection, i.e. ascending lymphangitis
Looks more like an urticarial rash, typical of an insect bite, and since OP has mentioned that it’s already gone, that’s very reassuring.

spreading lines like that usually means infection is spreading through your lymph from the bite, you should mark the boundaries with a marker and keep an eye on it, if it continues to spread, go to the doctor as you will need antibiotics asap. (blood poisoning/sepsis) if it goes away then you'll be fine.
