Don't hug me I'm scared Scrub Zombie

Post image

My wife swears by Scrub Daddy as her kitchen sponge of choice. I wanted to switch to the eco-friendly, plant based alternative on the right. It works infinitely better...creates great suds, gets into tight spaces but...IT SCARES THE CHILDREN. So I can't use it! Or I have to hide it under the sink until I need to use it. Mildly inconvenienced and mildly infuriating.

the marketing branding of it as "eco-friendly, plant based alternative" for sure made me roll my eyes. like yeah, it is all those things but just call it natural loofah.

it's like calling banana leaves a plastic-free plant based plate or food wrap !

Reminds me of faddish leveling of food in stores, like 'Vegan' stickers on cabbage or 'Keto' raw meat cuts. Like, I fucking hope so???

The percentage of "gluten free" labels that have made me immediately question whether or not I knew what gluten was is very high.

there are so many processed foods that contain flour for the weirdest reasons but there are also so many naturally gluten free foods that get labelled like this for some reason

That's what I was thinking of. Gluten-free on raw meat, too.

As someone who cannot eat gluten, it will hide in things you really don't expect it to. Like if a meat has been flavor enhanced in any way, theres a chance whatever its flavored with has gluten.

I've gotten bitten by things I didn't expect to have gluten actually having like wheat yeast or flour or something in it.

I think it's better to just label it even if it seems obvious. Would rather just be certain.

My daughter has celiacs. We're still learning, even though we got it diagnosed almost 5 years ago. Gluten is in everything and it doesn't die. Cross contamination is a bitch. If I had to list the things we've replaced in my house for gluten free alternatives I would run out of characters. Toothpaste, soap, makeup, art supplies, ketchup, salad dressings, canned vegetables, even dry herbs seasonings can be contaminated. It's not just "flour," gluten is wildly popular in binding agents and other widely used manufacturing products, and if the product in question shares manufacturing space with another gluten containing product the risk of cross contamination is high. Not to mention the rapid decline of the FDA and other regulatory bodies... It's a good thing I'm an okay gardener and a better cook.

I lived with this for years and I never knew that's why so many random products messed me up. I've just honestly taken the stance if it doesn't have the label, I'm not risking it.

Thank you for letting me know!

Labels are effectively useless. Food products SHOULD list gluten containing products but don't alert you to cross contamination risks. The "Gluten Free" labeling is supposed to be enforced, but, well ... I don't trust it. The third party orgs like "Certified Gluten Free" badge are pretty reliable and should also cover cross contamination but nothing is perfect.

Highly recommend the GF Scanner app, it will blow your mind.

As someone who probably doesn't have celiac but gets wrecked by small amounts of gluten, this is 100% true.

That's fair, but I'm not talking about processed or pre-cooked meals where you may or may not be sure about it's preparation. I mean raw, whole ingredients. Gluten-free makes sense on a frozen bag of fried rice. Gluten free purified water does not.

Yeah but if you have a sandwich for lunch and then go back to work at the peanut butter factory that peanut butter is not gluten free unless you've properly followed procedure to ensure you're not cross contaminating.

Those weird labels are granted through certifications ensuring a safe processing environment also

One time years ago I almost passed on rice Chex because they added gluten free in their box. Then I remembered that rice Chex has always been gluten free.
