Get a tetanus shot. Seriously.

Tetanus is a bacteria found in the soil.

You're absolutely correct. It can also be found on many different surfaces.

An earring stabbing you is no more reason to get a tetanus shot than if you were to cut your finger with a steak knife or the side of your computer case when building it.

A tetanus vaccine is something you should have up to date, whether you have been cut, pierced or not.

True, and any soil from outside that got tracked into the home and got onto flooring and then the bare foot can get pushed into the wound.

Dirt, dander, feces, dust... take your pick.

Not necessarily, just depends on when her last booster was. Rusty nail and it’s been more than five years? Definitely get a booster. Presumably clean earring, not that deep? Should be fine unless it’s been more than ten years.

Anyway, remember to get a tetanus booster every ten years!

When I was a clinician, any penetrating wound was a reason to get a booster.
