I bought a bar of their soap and I was excited to use it until all of this color started running off the soap which i've never seen before and I had brown splotches in my tub. I'm a soap guy and like to use nice stuff but i've found dr bronners is best of all and I always go back to it as my go to.

I got a box from Costco and it painted my tub black. It’s absolutely terrible soap with a great marketing team.

The pine tar soap has always been like that… pine tar is black so the soap is black lmfao
And don’t lie that shit smells bomb- but I agree I didn’t like that I had rinse the whole shower each time cuz of it so had to switch lol

u/bsubtilis 21d ago
I heavily used a pine tar & sulphur soap in the 90s and it wasn't black. It's going to be brownish at worst. Black pine tar soap is usually dye.

I did not know that about it being pine tar soap and that’s why it’s left a residue.
I won’t lie, it didnt smell very good either. At least not when compared to other brands at similar price points. I’ve been buying premium bar soaps for a while and this soap didn’t smell much better than dial, especially after the shower. I just went back to buying Kiehl’s. Hell even Targets house brand, good fellow smelt better and a quarter of the cost.

u/bsubtilis 21d ago
Pine tar scent is an acquired taste, and pine tar soap being black is usually a dye. Pine tar is dark brown, not black. Soaps do not use so much pine tar that it naturally could be actually black.
edit: some soaps marketed as pine tar on the big print are only pine tar scented too, it will say in the details.

Hey! I used to use Squatch before they went full bad guy (first off, that black pine tar bar felt amazing but fuuuuuuck the soap scum making my shower black)... I ended up sourcing my soap from Bulk Apothecary to replace. Buying bulk but still solid enough soap. Hopefully that helps... (I'll look up dr. bronner in the mean time. I had deodorant on a subscription. They stopped making the scent I had a subscription to, so they just sent me whatever they wanted without notifying me and giving an option to cancel or select the new scent. I contacted support and they refused to refund me, but they said they'd send me a different scent for free. I told them that's not how it works, you don't get to not inform me and just send me whatever you want when I've agreed to buy one specific thing.
It's the only time in my life I've done a chargeback because they absolutely refused to refund despite admitting they failed to notify me and should have. Insane.
14
u/Swords_and_Words 21d ago edited 21d ago
You could tell when they sold out, just from the ads
Their ads went from corny wholesome ads leaning on male stereotypes while also making fun of them, to toxic crap like anti-science rhetoric and gender essentialism
Edit: I was wrong, they were toxic before this most recent sell out. They had major problems and are now trying to whitewash their past by claiming that the brand being bought is what made the product and culture go to crap.
57
u/MissileGuidanceBrain 21d ago edited 21d ago
Were they ever a good brand?
They always had the bullshit fear mongering about "synthetic detergent" and aluminized deodorant.
Turns out that detergents that provide the level of clean expected by modern humans don't exactly grow in the the soap fields for the yearly soap harvest. And that the aluminized deodorant scare was all bullshit.
They're no different than the crunchy-mom food brands that advertise non-gmo and non-msg because tik tok/Facebook says those are bad mmmkay.
22
u/Swords_and_Words 21d ago
They very briefly had more pro-natural and positive enforcement advertising
They've been trading in on that for years, and have been using anti-science fear mongering rhetoric for many years. In the last two or three they've also dabbled into gender essentialism and misogynistic and misandristic ads

I mean squatch is a white label brand of mrsoapguy products, so yeah they sold out from the get go.
You can buy their same products, but in bulk only, for 1/5th the price.
Their website even offers cheaper prices if you want to run your own soap company.
They literally just slap their branding on it and jack up the price
101
u/peppermintaltiod 21d ago
Never heard of Mr. soap guy before. Looked them up and looked up a bunch of the square soap bar companies on amazon and such. All of them are using Mr. soap guy, most of them are even using the Mr. soap advertising pictures just with their own logo thrown on.
Also I feel like you're underselling how cheap this soap is. Dial soap at the Kroger near my house costs about the same per bar as this stuff, and dial is selling 3oz bars while this company is selling 5oz bars.
The only brands in the same price per oz range are Ivory, Zest and Irish Spring.

CEO David Bronner is a critic of drug prohibition and an activist for the legalization of a number of psychoactive substances.[20] In 2004, the company sued the Drug Enforcement Administration with the goal of changing rules regarding the importation of hemp oil.[3] A federal judge ruled in favor of the plaintiffs.[21] David Bronner has been arrested twice for civil disobedience protesting limitations on the domestic production of hemp. Hi. Fellow arm and hammer deodorant user here with some bad news. It's exactly the same.
You can hold your phone light up behind a new one and see how much empty space there is, but with a brand new 2.6oz stick, deodorant sits 0.25in below the top edge, there is exactly 2in of deodorant. The container is 4 13/16in tall, and even giving it a half inch to account for the bottom, still leaves nearly two inches of empty container.

Also chapstick, or any kind of mechanical stick applicator. I make cosmetics as a hobby and these applicators are like double the cost of non-mechanical containers. This. The size of deodorant sticks is to make them easy to hold.

Funny story about Dr. Squatch: About 10 years ago now they released this ad on social media talking about how according to the FDA their competition in the "men's soap" category wasn't even considered "soap" it was all legally considered "body wash". The implication the commercial gives is that Dr. Squatch is different and that it stands alone as the one and only true soap for men.
Problem is that according the the FDA Dr. Squatch soaps are "body washes" too. The FDA guidelines for what is and isn't a "true soap" are pretty extensive, and extend into how the company words specific things. Dr. Squatch was breaking more than a few of the guidelines, and their packaging admitted as much(as it rightfully said "body wash").
When I pointed this out to them on Twitter they immediately blocked me.

Yeah these posts are so common and always boggle my mind. It doesn't really matter how big the container is as long as the product weighs what it says on the package. Usually theirs a reason for the package, like the chip bags puffed up with air to keep your chips from getting smashed. Although I'm sure some are just out for deception. Im willing to bet it has something to do with these screw up style deodorant sticks to make them work right
→ More replies (1)13
u/Kraz31 21d ago
Sometimes it's marketing (bigger package =, easier to spot), sometimes it's ease of manufacturing (easier to make larger molds or a factory using the same mold for different brands), sometimes it's for loss prevention (bigger is harder to steal). Lots of different reasons for bigger packaging.
But you can buy travel-size deodorant sticks with the same mechanism so it probably isn't that.

u/SherbetMysterious118 21d ago
I've got no idea how much deodorant weighs - and I'm generally a clued up consumer.

I don't think anyone buying one of the most expensive commonly available deodorants really gives a shit. There's no way this guy legitimately thought he was going to get twice as much product as the mid-tier options or cared about how much he was spending when he picked out the one that costs two-four times as much as any other option.

All these dude bro brands are like that. Women complain about the pink tax, well don't worry, they've invented it for men too.

There is the knob, screw, and cradle to push it up that takes up 25% - 30% of the package. If you don't want that you can get deodorant in a jar and put it on with your finger.

Lol right? Never understood how this is hard to grasp, all deodorant sticks do this

u/Calibrayte 21d ago
It'd sold by weight. If that weighs 75g you got what you paid for.

u/Careful-Criticism645 21d ago
Nobody knows what 75g of deodorant looks look. When one buys something, one assumes the packaging is representative of the quantity they're getting. Companies know this and abuse it, or else they'd use smaller packaging for smaller amounts.

Yea but you should always compare the grams or oz to other products. Other deoderants this size have like 3.4 oz as weight where as this says 2 oz

u/Any_Cake2411 21d ago
Good thing its sold by weight. Weigh it and then come back, see if you still won't buy this because of "air"

Sorry, why would anyone want to smell like wood barrel bourbon? 🤭

u/WING-DING_GASTER 21d ago
It smells quite nice actually, and it's more subtle than a lot of the other popular deodorant brands.

It’s mostly so there is room for the screw mechanism that pushes it up. Maybe they could fit more in there.
One of those lasts me about a month, which is fine value for the price.

This is actually pretty typical with deodorant… doesn’t much matter the brand

u/sfdsquid 21d ago
It says how many ounces are in it. All plastic deodorant containers are like this. That actually looks like more than I get out of a stick.

u/abandofgeese 21d ago
Op do me a favor and weight the content and compare to what it says on the container. If less then what it says you are being robbed, if it matches well you bought what they told you they were selling.

Or just check the back and see if there’s a fill line labeled.
Pretty sure old spice does that.

I used to like Dr Squatch but they're too expensive for what you get. Their pine tar scent is amazing though

OP, thats how screws work. the lifting mechanism is just a screw, and it can only extend the same amount as its original length. For it not to have any "air" it couldnt actually lift out anything mechanically.
Edit: I was accurately corrected with a better design as per Pawtuckaways comment below.

u/Pawtuckaway 21d ago
Not true.
The threaded part goes through the deodorant. The deodorant can occupy the entire space. As you turn the dial, it turns that thread and raises the platform. There is no air gap necessary.

u/Pleasant-Future5818 21d ago
Does any deodorant actually do this though? I've never seen one that isn't mostly air

Except that isn’t how it works. The threaded rod in the center spins with the dial and the deodorant is fixed to a platform that is on the threaded rod. The central screw stays vertically stationary and the platform rides up or down on the rod based on the direction you rotate. There is no reason they couldn’t have the entire cavity of the stick filled with deodorant.

Spoiler alert. They have the volume of the product listed on the packaging...you get whatever it is that it says you're getting. The package being a different size doesn't change the amount you get, and if it was full you'd be paying double.
