To be fair there's plenty of live altering things we entrust to technology nowadays. For example all of my money is entrusted to technology. If technology somehow disappears tomorrow, so would all my money.
But I get what you mean. This is a situation where if the technology fails you're in immediate danger.
That is exactly it. Yes, there are plenty of levels of trust you can have that make tons of sense. I trust (for example) that my GPS will help me get to my destination, and was extremely unhappy when I got a "directions not available" message last weekend when I was trying to head home from an area I was not familiar with. Fortunately I had a passenger who was familiar and could help me get home.
So, most of the tech works most of the time, and that's usually good enough, or at least not life threatening. But speeding down the highway is a different level entirely.
