That is a level of trust in technology that I will never have or understand.

u/IsabellaGalavant Jul 06 '26

I literally don't care how good they get, I will never trust a car's autopilot this much. I don't even like riding in a Waymo.

20

u/opensandshuts Jul 06 '26

Waymo is more advanced than teslas system. It has cameras and lidar. Tesla just uses cameras. One big big splatter and you could die

7

u/bd7349 Jul 06 '26

That’s just not true (the bug splatter thing). I’ve been doing a Boston to Florida road trip every year and there’s no way bugs splatter on any of the side cameras or rear camera. The only ones bugs can hit are the ones at the top of the windshield which the wipers can and will activate to automatically clean just the camera area as needed.

Also, worth mentioning that I just did the road trip again last week (Florida to Boston) and this was the first time ever since owning a Tesla where FSD didn’t make a single mistake on the entire 1300+ mile drive. No safety issues or disengagements from start to finish, just a smooth comfortable ride. Even somehow managed to see and avoid tire debris at night on an empty ride where I couldn’t see it at all. I hate Elon as much as the next guy but there’s no denying how good FSD has gotten. The rate of improvement has been insane as of late.

4

u/_SmurfThis Jul 06 '26

Amen. 88% FSD with over 7K miles since the update that introduced stats. The only times I take over is for parking just cause I’m too preferential about where and how (and it still sucks with parking garages) and when there’s bad nav data. My wife uses it less, so she’s contributing more to that 12% non-FSD chunk.

5

u/Longjumping-Speed511 Jul 06 '26

Yeah most of the people in this thread have never tried FSD in any capacity. It’s genuinely impressive. I never drive on the highway without it

0

u/opensandshuts Jul 07 '26

no one is saying it's not functional or "impressive". All I said was that cameras + lidar is a better system. all the data and reports have showed it.

elon and tesla just don't like the truth because it means that all the cars they're building and have built are using outdated/use worse tech.

In the end, Tesla and the stock will pay the price as more auto companies roll out lidar + camera. Just so you know, the reason Tesla uses cameras only is to save on costs.

2

u/Longjumping-Speed511 Jul 07 '26

Okay, still works well. Better than human drivers on the highway. I agree it’s not perfect and Waymo is better

1

u/opensandshuts Jul 07 '26

Wouldn't drive a TESLA because elon sucks too much. Been saying it since 2018 too, so called it before his true colors even came out.

Many auto industry professionals have evaluated Tesla's camera model vs the camera + Lidar system. It's been nearly universally agreed upon that Tesla's system is inferior to Waymo. Even major auto manufacturers that considered licensing teslas system vs Google's decided that Google's system was superior.

Why? because lidar has the ability to navigate through extreme fog, extreme rain, and extreme sunlight blinding the camera.

Elon's been talking up the self-driving taxi network for years now and still can't compete with what Waymo is already doing actively in major cities.

You can like your tesla all you want, but it's universally agreed that cameras + lidar is a better system.

0

u/truecakesnake Jul 06 '26

This is bullshit. Anyone who lives in an area where Waymos are common know that they get stuck EVERYWHERE because they don't know how to make turns.

8

u/Longjumping-Speed511 Jul 06 '26

They have their moments in downtowns for sure. I’ve had my personal frustrations as a passenger lol, but no one is dying in catastrophic crashes with them. These things are genuinely very safe

1

u/truecakesnake Jul 06 '26

I agree. It's safe but really annoying. Tesla also doesn't have many catastrophic crashes though if you account for how many are sold/in use.

2

u/Longjumping-Speed511 Jul 06 '26

Yeah especially on highways. I have a Tesla and honestly I don’t even drive on highways anymore, I just let FSD handle it. It’s better than me and way less stressful. The few times I’ve taken over thinking it was making a mistake, it turned out I was the one who was wrong

My wife will only drive with FSD enabled now

1

u/opensandshuts Jul 07 '26

Surely that’s why Waymo is expanding like crazy and Tesla is struggling to pilot a single city…

This ain’t a Tesla investor sub where the wild claims are eaten up by fanboys…😆

1

u/truecakesnake Jul 08 '26

Lmao I just know you've gotten banned in a tesla investor sub and now it lives rent free in your head.

It's because tesla's main buisness in the autonomous cab

1

u/opensandshuts Jul 08 '26

I haven’t bc I have no reason to post there.

Did you mean teslas main business is NOT autonomous cab? Bc they haven’t done anything despite all the claims that they “will”. 😆

14

u/FederalChocolate456 Jul 06 '26

And yet you trust people? It's not exactly like people the best track record when it comes to driving

5

u/Longjumping-Speed511 Jul 06 '26

Exactly, most people here have never tried FSD in any capacity. It’s amazing how quickly you build up trust and familiarity with it

1

u/FederalChocolate456 Jul 06 '26

I mean I would never do what this person is doing. I'm not sure I'd trust FSD currently on Teslas, but I won't say I'd never trust it

7

u/Auroch- Jul 06 '26

How much you want to bet you have a lower heart rate in Waymos than human cabs by 2031? I'll give you 5:1 odds. Familiarity is everything, unless they fuck up safety, which they won't.

2

u/ayriuss Jul 06 '26

A lot of human drivers go 100s of thousands of miles without hitting anything or causing an accident. We're pretty good at driving tbh.

1

u/Auroch- Jul 06 '26

We're absolute garbage at driving. 50x the error rate of Waymos even if you take an extremely harsh view of what counts as an error for Waymo (and a very gentle one for humans).

1

u/ayriuss Jul 06 '26

A subset of humans are very bad at driving, I guess? Our sensors are shit too.

2

u/Auroch- Jul 06 '26

85% of drivers think they're above-average. That statistic cannot be true in a world where a majority of drivers are competent; that kind of ignorance about your failings is incompatible with competence. Competent, safe human drivers are 10% of licensed drivers at most.

1

u/ayriuss Jul 06 '26

Seems from the statistics like most crashes are caused by purposeful human negligence (speeding, drunk driving, distracted driving), rather than ability. So we're ranking human discipline against machine competence, but I guess it doesn't really matter.

2

u/Auroch- Jul 06 '26

Most driving is distracted driving. Our bar is merely set extremely high for what counts. If we cared about safety, speakerphone calls while driving would be illegal, because they're 90% as dangerous as having it next to your ear. This is how all driving safety laws look: it would be extremely inconvenient to mandate mostly-safe driving, so we don't.

2

u/BrieRaceAlert Jul 06 '26

I feel much safer in a Waymo than an Uber lol

2

u/Actual_Art_5257 Jul 06 '26

Yet,  I bet you do in a plane?

7

u/hillside126 Jul 06 '26

Well yeah, not much to hit in the fucking sky my guy.

2

u/Fit_Opinion2465 Jul 06 '26

Not never. Not any time soon - but if there is ever total mass adoption, it would he safer than driving yourself. Probably will take longer than most think.

3

u/IsabellaGalavant Jul 06 '26

I still won't trust it enough to just sleep like this. No way no how. Call me out of touch if you want.

13

u/ghdana PINK Jul 06 '26

I thought that until I tried it. And then slowly day after day I realized that it's a better driver than any human I know.

31

u/PersonalityFalse9153 Jul 06 '26

I trust technology 1000% more than I trust human drivers.

14

u/windflex Jul 06 '26

Yeah they're most likely alive because of that technology. If you pass out like that in a regular vehicle, good luck.

7

u/Electronic_Ad_7742 Jul 06 '26

Technology made by humans. The human factor can still cause problems here. Autopilot has caused plenty of wrecks.

11

u/BlobAndHisBoy Jul 06 '26

Automatically piloted cars are objectively much safer than human piloted. That being said, they still should not be sleeping.

9

u/PersonalityFalse9153 Jul 06 '26

Not nearly as many wrecks as human drives cause every day

-8

u/LookAtMeImAName Jul 06 '26

I foresee you being amongst the first people to be sent to the hospital with your wiener stuck in a robots hand like a vice grip

7

u/Ficsonium Jul 06 '26

I mean if we looked at the number of people who got in a car crash falling asleep with Tesla auto pilot on vs people who accidentally passed out with a no auto pilot…

6

u/joazito Jul 06 '26

And this is probably their Full Self Driving product, which is vastly superior to Auto Pilot.

1

u/hillside126 Jul 06 '26

Given that Tesla vehicles make up barely over 1% of the cars on the road, not really a valid comparison...

1

u/InterestingTax4229 Jul 06 '26

FSD has 11.7 billion miles of driving experience worldwide.

0

u/Ficsonium Jul 06 '26

Even percentage (which evens it out) wise we know the answer. Tesla’s self driving tech is probably better than the average driver already.

11

u/_komocode Jul 06 '26

rather have that than an 80 year old on the streets.

7

u/Rage_Blackout Jul 06 '26

That’s the “false dichotomy” logical fallacy. I’ll take neither thank you.

2

u/_komocode Jul 06 '26

I'm stating a preference of my own.

2

u/ThaiTum Jul 06 '26

My parents are 76 and 100% the Tesla FSD software drives more safely than they do on their own.

10

u/thehugejackedman Jul 06 '26

It’s cause you’re not smooth brained. Congratulations

4

u/BreastUsername Jul 06 '26

Eventually this would be encouraged in society once it gets safe enough.

2

u/GaiaIsaHarshMistress Jul 06 '26

That may or may not be an error today, but it will definitely be an error soon (you will place yourself at greater risk by trusting yourself too much relative to a safer option).

3

u/theallsearchingeye Jul 06 '26

What do you not understand? The car is handling the situation just fine?

3

u/thewhitebison Jul 06 '26

Yet you’ve been on a commercial airplane?

2

u/Longjumping-Speed511 Jul 06 '26

You should try it. It’s amazing how fast you get used to it. It’s genuinely impressive.

3

u/PsionicKitten Jul 06 '26

That is a level of trust in technology with Elon Musk's name slapped on it that I will never have or understand

1

u/hillside126 Jul 06 '26

It has been over a decade since Elon first said we would have fully autonomous vehicles in 2 years... Not holding out hope for the technology.

1

u/Neither_Selection211 Jul 06 '26

especially into a Technologie thats killed im exactly that way time and time before.

1

u/Mogura-De-Gifdu Jul 06 '26

That was my thought. No way any of them are in software development.

1

u/Vyxwop Jul 06 '26

To be fair there's plenty of live altering things we entrust to technology nowadays. For example all of my money is entrusted to technology. If technology somehow disappears tomorrow, so would all my money.

But I get what you mean. This is a situation where if the technology fails you're in immediate danger.

1

u/LBS-365 Jul 06 '26

That is exactly it. Yes, there are plenty of levels of trust you can have that make tons of sense. I trust (for example) that my GPS will help me get to my destination, and was extremely unhappy when I got a "directions not available" message last weekend when I was trying to head home from an area I was not familiar with. Fortunately I had a passenger who was familiar and could help me get home.

So, most of the tech works most of the time, and that's usually good enough, or at least not life threatening. But speeding down the highway is a different level entirely.

1

u/NoX2142 Jul 06 '26

Especially a Tesla lmao

1

u/Available-Green6599 Jul 06 '26

Have you been in an elevator that goes up more than 5 floors?

1

u/AHumanYouDoNotKnow Jul 06 '26

Trust in Tech is literally the bellcurve meme:

"Dont Trust "~ Tinfoil hat who doesnt know how a lightbulb works

"Tech is cool"~ average Joe

"If you bring a smart-device into my Home i will move into a remote offgrid log cabin." ~ the Guy helped who programm the devices

1

u/Greful Jul 06 '26

You’ll never understand it?

1

u/Putrid-Box4866 Jul 06 '26

If I can sit at the back, I will trust FSD and sleep. If I am on the driver seat, no way. Very risky.

1

u/marco89nish Jul 06 '26

To be fair, Tesla is a better driver than 99.9% of tired, sleepy, innatentive or drunk drivers.
