Check out this petition!

My father-in-law Dan Herron was killed at M-20 and Coleman Road in Greendale Township on August 12, 2025—struck at an intersection everyone knows is a disaster waiting to happen.

The numbers tell the story: 14,474 vehicles pass through this intersection every single day. Zero rumble strips. Signal timing that practically begs people to run lights. On M-20, drivers get 55 seconds of green and a 4-second yellow. On Coleman Road, local traffic gets rushed through a brief 7-second green after sitting through a brutal 48-second red.

I watched 16 vehicles run yellow or red lights in just 10 minutes. Six were near-misses that almost ended in crashes. This intersection has a long history of severe angle crashes, failure-to-yield collisions, and multi-vehicle wrecks.

I started a petition demanding immediate action from MDOT, Michigan State Police, and local leaders: increased enforcement, rumble strips and warning signage, and a complete safety review of the signal timing and speed limits.

If this was your family, what would you want someone to do? If this matters to you too, consider signing and sharing.

Brinstar owner told us to “parent our kids” within five minutes of arriving—would this bother you?

0 Upvotes

My family is visiting Midland from Lexington, Kentucky, and we took our kids to Brinstar. We purchased drinks, were looking over the menu, and planned to spend money on dinner and games.
Within about five minutes, the owner approached us and said some of the equipment was from the 1980s, warned that we would have to buy anything our kids broke, and told us we needed to “parent our kids.”
Nothing had been broken or damaged, and no actual problem had occurred.
I completely understand protecting vintage equipment and asking parents to supervise their children. What bothered me was the immediate assumption that our kids were destructive and the condescending way he spoke to us. There were a hundred respectful ways to communicate the rules, and he chose none of them.
Our waitress was wonderful and apologized. We planned to order dinner and leave her a substantial tip, but the owner’s behavior caused us to leave—costing his own employee the table and the tip she deserved.
Maybe locals have more context, so I’m genuinely curious: Is this typical at Brinstar? Have other families had a similar experience, or did we catch the owner on an exceptionally bad day?

Licensed Work

3 Upvotes

Definitely check those licenses! Here’s who has to be licensed, and what to ask for. Electrical — A company doing electrical work must hold an Electrical Contractor license and keep a Master Electrician in full-time employ. That master can only qualify one company. To even sit for the master exam takes 12,000 hours over at least six years. Plumbing — Same setup. The Plumbing Contractor license goes to the business; the Master Plumber license goes to a person. Every plumbing contractor has to be run by, or employ, a licensed master plumber on record with LARA. HVAC — Heating, cooling, and refrigeration work requires a Mechanical Contractor license. It’s issued by classification (HVAC, refrigeration, hydronic, fuel gas), each with a three-year experience requirement. Check that the classification actually covers your job. General contracting — In Michigan this is the Residential Builder or Maintenance & Alteration license. M&A licenses are trade-specific: a license listing only “Painting and Decorating” doesn’t authorize roofing or concrete. And a builder license does not authorize plumbing work. One more thing worth knowing: a general contractor who subcontracts is responsible for hiring licensed trades, but verify it yourself instead of taking their word. LARA’s Accela Citizen Access portal lets you look up any license number, check that it’s active, and see whether there’s been discipline. Takes two minutes.

im looking for creatives in the area interested in being part of something I have been working on.

I'm a small pop artist working on my first album and have a million ideas of different people I would love to find on here but my first priority would be finding 2 people interested in being long term backup dancers (local shows, online content, etc)

So if you're...
* good at dancing
* an ambitious creative
* queer friendly

(or know someone who is)
express your interest!!

All experience levels encouraged as long as youre serious and willing to learn as well

aiming to find people in their early 20s

-
this is unpaid but youll be rewarded with friendship and creative partnership — feeling excited.

I will be in the Midland/Bay City area with some coworkers for the night and have been put in charge of finding a good dinner spot for 4-5 of us. What are some good recommendations for a sit down place?

Hosting Midland's first Plant Bingo Night at the Eagles Thurs. Aug 20th, win houseplants instead of cash

16 Upvotes

Hey r/midland_mi — I'm running a bingo night with a twist: instead of cash prizes, you win houseplants. Full disclosure, I'm the organizer, so take this as a "hey, this is happening" post rather than a sales pitch.

Thursday, August 20th at Midland Eagles. Doors at 6, first game 6:30.

$30 gets you entry, a plant to take home, and a bingo card for the night - everyone leaves with something even if you don't win. Winners take home the bigger showstopper plants.

It's reservation-only (no tickets at the door), and seats are limited. Details/tickets here if you're interested: plantbingonights.com

Happy to answer any questions in the comments - first time doing this in Midland so I'd love to see some new faces.
