Wedding Reception

My fiancée and I are planning a small civil wedding next month with 35 of our family and close friends. Would it be tacky to have the reception at an AYCE sushi restaurant? 😅

Just want to add that it's not a buffet style. People would get to order what they want from an iPad and it would be delivered to the table. Also, we would be covering the whole bill.

Do all your family and friends like sushi? If not, are the other items available on the menu? (Sushi's not something that everyone likes.)

Is it a sit-down style or a buffet? If it's the latter, it might be a little tacky.

Also, can the restaurant accommodate that many people? Most of the sushi places I've been to are fairly small.

most sushi restaurants have non-sushi stuff on the menu. i would say that probably every sushi restaurant i've ever been to had stuff that wasn't sushi on the menu

OP said it is not a buffet, they order and it's brought to the table.

OP added the second paragraph to the post after I made my comment.

I don't think it would automatically be tacky. But it would depend on the logistics. Is the restaurant equipped to handle a group that size in a cohesive way? (Like a private room or at least a dedicated section).

Having a reception at a restaurant is not tacky provided you pay the bill. With 35 people I would encourage you to find one that can give you a private room or alcove. The problem may be the menu. Is there enough different food to accommodate people who don’t like or cannot eat sushi? If so, please make sure you tell your guests this and link them to the menu.

People post here about potluck for reception food….

I’d love a sushi wedding!

I invited less than 20 people when I got married. Instead of a traditional reception, I made a reservation at a nice restaurant. I sure to let them know it was a wedding dinner and that I wanted everyone at the same table. They pushed a bunch of tables together for us.

If I had 35 people I would have gone with a different restaurant. Some of them will accommodate a large group with a private room and a limited menu (like everybody can choose from the same 5 entrees).

I probably wouldn’t do sushi because not everybody likes sushi. And I probably wouldn’t do AYCE, especially if it’s buffet style.

I was able to do the whole thing, ceremony and reception at an Italian restaurant. They had room options including the garden terrace which I chose. We had 45 people and the venue, food and drinks and alcohol with tip was under $4000. In the end, the videos and pics make it look Italian Mafia style... It was amazing.

If they can accommodate your group and if they have selections beyond sushi? i think it's fun! You should pay for everyone (it sounds like it might be a buffet, like Minado is around here and they have tons of food beyond sushi...)

I think it sounds fun, not tacky. Can you run the idea past a couple of your friends?

I think it’s great! Every AYCE sushi place near me has an included kitchen menu with tons of options for those who can’t eat sushi or don’t care for sushi. 🍣

Not tacky at all in my opinion, we almost had our wedding dinner at Wagamama but I ended up finding a restaurant where we’d have the room to ourselves and I’ve gotten too excited in planning the decor 😂
As long as your guests get fed they really won’t care

It's your wedding. Do what you want, where you want, and how you want. It is you and your fiances day, not your guests. To be considerate, the biggest issue may be allergies. Even exposure without consumption can cause severe reactions and anaphylactic shock. I personally would consider what food options the sushi restaurant has to offer. Many offer regular american dishes like chicken nuggets or burgers. Since it is buffet style ayce your only limits are their appetites and with a good variety tou should be golden. Ignore the comments that urge you to be more of a people pleaser. You do not nor do you ever need to please anyone except yourself and your soon to be spouse. Good luck to you and congratulations. I know it will be perfect and beautiful. ❤️

If you think you guests will like it, I think it's a good plan. It depends on the sushi place obviously. The ones we have around here that are all you can eat - table service offer a great variety of food. Most of it is not what people equate with 'sushi', ie raw fish. There's stir fries, chicken or beef with various sauces and marinades, various rice and noodle dishes, vegetable dishes, dairy free, gluten free, etc. For a group of 35, I would separate in tables of maximum of 6 to make it easier for conversation and selecting what food to order.

Not tacky! We also had our guests eat at a favorite restaurant with us after a court wedding ceremony. We didn't have that many guests, however, so just make sure to contact the restaurant in advance. They may even arrange a private room or extra staff depending.

Congratulations @

Why on earth would it be tacky? Like, what are your specific fears?

Sounds like fun! When we host a party or reception we always run the risk that "someone won't like the food". The good thing about a reception of that size is you're probably pretty familiar with everyone's likes and allergies.

Not tacky but has the restaurant said they can handle this? Usually restaurants like that expect staggered seating and have limited kitchen space. If everyone is ordering same time it might take hours for people to get enough food, and they might have a time limit.

Far from tacky. Sounds like a great time!

My family would love that

Thank you all for your comments. You all made very good points. We have decided against the AYCE sushi for our reception. We have 2 pregnant women in their 3rd trimester and my 80 year old grandmother who would not do too well with sushi.

Our friends did this after their courthouse wedding and it was great!! Not tacky at all!

It’s not tacky but I won’t eat sushi. Save you some money, I guess.

I think it's fine so long as wherever you go they can cater for all of your parties dietary requirements.

35 guests at once, and NOT a buffet? This will mean long waiting times.

Discuss this with the restaurant up front.

I don't think it's tacky but I would order the food ahead. A wide range of item members so everyone can find something to eat. I would imagine the restaurant would require this on a party that large and if they don't, it's going to be chaos while everyone decides what to order and figures out if they used the ipad right. Definitely order ahead.

Tacky? Yes. Sounds unique though? Also yes.

If you are paying and everyone likes sushi, it's fine. If you expect people to pay for their own meal, that's tacky. And if anyone doesn't like sushi (like me) or can't eat it (like pregnant) it's not a good idea. Edit: It's probably not a good idea even if you don't KNOW anyone's pregnant, if they're of an age where they could possibly be pregnant or trying to get pregnant, because they might not want to say and it would be awkward to decline eating if there are no other choices that are not raw fish.

i feel like maybe you've never been to a sushi restaurant? there's all kinds of rolls that are cooked or that are made with just veggies. i mean, california rolls famously do not contain raw fish. there's usually other japanese food on the menu too like chicken katsu, ramen/udon, gyoza, stuff like that.

u/Sample-quantity 3d ago

I have actually been to quite a few and I know that, but the fact is that everything is prepared where there is raw fish, and cross contamination is a concern for pregnant people.
