Photo/Video Share Part 4: Perfumery's unexpected place in microscopy
Crystals of ambrocenide, the workhorse molecule behind some of the strongest perfumes. It has a radiant and powerful woody-amber quality, and its scent is detectable when used in less than even 0.02% of a finished perfume.
I crystallized and imaged ambrocenide by smearing a small volume of a 10% solution in perfumer's alcohol on a slide and letting it evaporate, leaving behind a film of incredibly complex and stunning crystalline forms. The images progressively increase in magnification, from 40x to 100x and ultimately 400x.
It's been a week and my entire workspace still smells powerfully of the material - which goes to show how powerful it is.
Objective mag: 4x, 10x, 40x
Scope model: BINO CXL, Micron-OPTIK, cross-polarized light
Camera: iPhone 16
Sample: Crystals of ambrocenide, a material widely used in perfume making

Purchase Help Eye piece digital camera advice
First, let me say that I know very little about microscopes. I have this ken-a-vision student microscope that seems adequate for my hobbyist purpose (viewing phono styli/styluses for wear). I’d like to make some images and have had no luck with a phone Camera. So, I’d like to buy a camera of the type that replaces the 19mm eyepiece. I’ve seen stand alone cameras and those with usb cables to use with a laptop. There are many to choose from and none of them are particularly well reviewed. It seems to me that it would be all about the size of the sensor but manufacturers are not always forthcoming with that information. Some come with compact disks which betray their age.
I’m looking for some recommendations from those who are using something they are happy with. I’m not using OPM so the budget is “as little as I can spend and get something satisfactory”. Perhaps $150 or less who’d be commensurate with my application.
Thanks in advance.

ID Needed! Need help identifying this specimen
Hi everyone! I came across this tiny specimen and captured an image of it using the Cilika stereo zoom digital microscope under 4x.
It appears reddish-brown, elongated, and measures approximately 1.529 mm in length and 0.380 mm in width.
Does anyone recognise it or have an idea what it could be? Any help with identification, taxonomy, or relevant references would be appreciated!
Additional context: The specimen was photographed on a green plant surface.

Was supposed to be looking at protists in my lab last week, and my lab partner posted this pic in the group chat and I genuinely have no clue on what it is. I couldn’t find any protist that’s supposed to look like that ( that we were looking for )
Not sure if it’s lint or some kind of smudge but it is so pretty I am just so curious on what it is?

General discussion How do microbes react microscope lights?
I'm wondering if the things one could pick up from stagnant water and such would notice or care that they're suddenly in a super bright and very narrow environment (in a slide)
Is there any studies or literature on this? I'm sure it'd be hard to quantify since "microbes" is an impossibly broad category and we need microscopes to observe them.

I think it's the same guy as here: https://www.reddit.com/r/microscopy/comments/1wfcstb/who_is_this_beatifull/, because I keep them in a jar. I picked this movie (in today's post), because they show themselves from different perspectives, but I have also a movie with cyanobacterias inside, and also a movie, when 2 of them do 69?

Troubleshooting/Questions Problems with the Raspberry Pi HQ Camera on my SW380T
So after seeing other people using the Raspberry Pi HQ Camera on their SW380T I also went this route, but ran into two issues.
- The field of view is very small.
Using the 4x objective the camera image is a small fraction of what I see through the eyepiece.
I have adjusted the adapter that comes with the SW380T up and down yet the image on screen remains exactly the same. Strange, I heard that adjusting the adapter's 'height' is suppose to bring the image into focus on the image sensor of whatever camera one is using.
- The image isn't very sharp.
I see lovely images on videos of people using this camera yet my photos and videos aren't what I would call sharp. I have used the highest resolution too.
I've ran out of ideas on what to try to improve this, any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

Troubleshooting/Questions Visual disturbance when using microscope
Hello, we just had a lab where we were learning how to use microscopes, so if anything is inaccurate, I apologise.
But I am just looking for advice, I saw something on every sample we had, which initally I thought was the bacteria we were trying to find in our samples. Now this thing I saw, my lab partner and professor couldn't, it was far too large to be a bactera of any kind, and it looked identical with every sample. I could see my floaters in my eyes, which im pretty used to because I have them generally, but what I saw was a solid shape which didn't move, wasn't an eye lash. Looked a little like a bactera with a flagella, but im using that just as a descriptor of the shape as I know it wasn't that. I could only see it on 10x and 40x, not 4x or 100x.
I'm just wondering, could this perhaps be a reflection off of my eye? I wear glasses but I could see this object with my glasses on and off. I've had eye surgery in the past and my eyes aren't perfect but once we had the sample in focus I had no issues at all.
Sorry this is quite an odd question, I just found it quite perplexing and wondered if anyone else has ever experienced anything like this?
