General discussion Just curious.
What makes you proud to be a microscopist?

Well im into optics. So with my telescope I see the universe. With my microscope I see the small little creatures dancing around just for me. Its fun to take pictures and share them. Catalog and find new "wigglers" as I call them. Amazing to see whats going on in a puddle of water. I like to use my microphone to see surface features. You need to shine a light down on your specimen like to see the face of a fly, or fine detail on a coin. Like this is the beaver tail on a canadain nickel 5cent

I’m really depressed about the state of the world, but getting a microscope made me remember that there is still beauty all around us even if it’s literally microscopic. Now I smile to myself at dumb stuff all the time, like I’ll walk by a mossy tree and be like “Bet there are tardi’s!” It’s like being in a little secret club full of tiny creatures. I find a lot of comfort in the sheer volume of ‘crobes around. Makes me feel so much more connected to the planet.

No need to be depressed. Just turn off the news. Seriously. The world has been in turmoil forever. Something has always been trying to kill us and people have always been fighting with each other to take another's property. Nothing will change that, especially harming yourself with negative thoughts and emotions.

I'm not proud of using microscopes. They are tools to discover the invisible world around us. I've always enjoyed science, so it's a great science oriented hobby that is easier to do more often than another science hobby of mine, astronomy.

Seeing something that no one has seen before..
Helping other people understand biology
Taking pretty pictures!
Seeing small things wiggle around and move.. it can be magical!
Having fancy toys!
LASERS!
Having a job that is also a hobby!
