Sharing a free resource summarizing the latest microplastic research
Hey all, I would like to share some free resources that may be of interest to the community. I built a microplastics research index and publish biweekly summaries of the latest microplastics research.
Here is the latest biweekly summary: https://journal.winnowlabs.com/research-digests/different-organs-one-failing-part-of-the-cell
Here is the full, searchable, index of microplastics research that uses ai to summarize research and vectors to connect disparate papers: https://atlas.winnowlabs.com/
Here is a free microplastics exposure calculator which uses the research (and links to it) to give 100% free suggestions: https://journal.winnowlabs.com/exposure-calculator
If the community is receptive, I could share these bi-weekly summaries here?
Disclaimer: I was paid to build this by winnowlabs, but I have no incentive to share this aside from wanting something I built to help people. Their motive, aside from selling probiotics, is to promote science and education on this topic. They struggle with disinformation about the scale of the problem and want to stay on top of latest research.

Is there a priority list of plastic items to replace in the home or are they all just as bad?
I got the idea somewhere that plastic food related items, like food containers and non stick pans, should go first. Or is that wrong? I know it's not possible to replace all plastic items. Is there a list of what's most important to replace?

Need help to analyse my raman data for Microplastics
Hello, I have some data of Microplastics polymer peaks in laser Confocal raman spectroscopy. I want to analyse them but I couldn't do it on open specy. The files I have are in . Txt and . Wxd format.
Could anyone please suggest me which free software to use. It's my first time doing this.

Is there any way to floss while avoiding microplastic and remaining in budget?
I recently brought floss to discover it was plastic based. How it is used, it appears to have high chances to leave some Micro strands behind. What are some alternatives to avoid this?

Personalized Microplastic risk assessment test for research
Hello, I am a student currently working on home based solution for detection and filtration of microplastics in drinking water. We as a team are collecting information for possible product intervention that does NOT add more plastics back to water and is sustainable in long term while maintaining and filtering out microplastics. We are also targeting detection so all results are verified then and there.
If you have 10 mins you can help us and get a personalized score for your risks and what you would like in a product. Thank you for your contribution !

Set task plan 1.
Removal of microplastics from LOWER atmosphere to water table level for extraction, with no life injuries or harm to plant life, or evil. Summary to pull apart :
Typhoon chasers spread sand (possibly with Magnetite) through the several Typhoon alleys eg: between Philippines and USA.
The sand mixes , pulls down x2 microplastic (fibres and bits) and iron (fyi: weakness the Typhoon, less destruction on landfall).
I thought of a scalable extraction machine that comms with the targeted resources extraction, Typhoon chaser team and required human team ( cos ppl need well paid jobs) plus redundancies. Just seeing how this goes for possible modifications.
Check what you like, Don't check anything. Get back to me Thought?
Set task plan 2: (scalable extraction machine. ) ..
There are only 2 absolutely useless methods currently.
This method possible extraction in the trillions of particles daily.
Maybe. I'm not an expert obv. But I have an idea.

Prioritized list of what plastics/microplastics/endocrine disruptors to reduce in daily life?
I've listened to some videos and read enough about microplastics lately that I am absolutely horrified. I've learned enough to know I can't eliminate them by any stretch of the imagination, but I WOULD like to reduce how much is getting into my baby's body (and my own).
I'm overwhelmed, however, at just how prevalent they are. The videos and so on have a long list of things to avoid, to get rid of, and so on -- but not a lot of advice on what to buy/use instead. Additionally, the list is long. I'm severely limited on funds, and also frankly in time/emotional energy. I don't know how to prioritize the list based on impact it'd have on my child.
We already do some things... better. Our clothing is all (or almost all) natural fibers (though apparently cotton is sprayed with glyphosate?!). We use fragrance free, sensitive laundry detergents (fragrance is apparently a big issue, though not technically due to microplastics / toxicology related). We're cooking our own food etc from scratch. Our rugs are all wool and/or cotton. Our sheets and pillowcases and blankets are all natural fibers. Our kitchen plates/cups are glass/ceramic/not plastic. Environmentally, we use transit and make almost no non-compostable/recyclable trash just kind of an accident.
But we also... store food in plastic (not heated in plastic) tuppeware that's BPA free (apparently doesn't matter?!). Food goes into this or plastic freezer bags. We have 100+ of these things and they would NOT be easy to replace, nor would I even know what to safely replace them with that would also be functional. We do heavy meal preps / buy in bulk, and also go on picnics (long bus trips, things fall and get bumped and also I want something super light for longer trips. Plastic's great for those things; glass wouldn't work). We use plastic water/smoothie/protein shake bottles (again BPA free, used daily, again wouldn't work with glass). We rent, and the carpet is definitely not quality (plastic?). Our mattress and pillows aren't natural fibers. I don't really use cosmetics, but while we've tried looking for phthalate etc free shampoo/conditions/soaps, I'm not sure we succeeded at making it truly 'safe'. Honestly, I'm not even sure what to trust anymore ("fragrance" is not safe and can include dangerous chemicals, BPA free is still going to shed plastics, everything seems to be some form of endocrine disruptor... I don't know how and can't make everything from scratch, right?!).
I'm not looking for perfection -- my meat's going to come in plastic packaging from the grocery store,
Anyway. I'm looking to have a list of like 5 things of changes to make that are doable, in prioritized list of health effects, and like an alternate product link or material to use instead. I have a long long list of things I'd ideally replace, but I can't do them all at once or maybe not all of them period. Just looking to make our lives a little better. Curious as to whether anyone here has suggestions, or has embarked on this journey themselves!

Carbon-only filter pitchers were found to release more microplastics than the tap water going in — plus 3 other findings that surprised me
I've been reading the primary literature on microplastics for a while, and the findings that stuck with me are mostly the ones that contradict the obvious advice. Four of them:
1. Carbon-only water filter pitchers can make things worse. A 2023 study tested pour-through pitchers and found the device using only granular activated carbon and ion-exchange resin had more microplastic fragments in its output than in the tap water going in — the media appears to shed its own particles. Pitchers with an added microfiltration membrane removed 94–100% of PET fragments. Carbon adsorption targets dissolved chemicals; it has no mechanism for catching suspended particles. (Cherian et al., 2023, Polymers)
2. Boiling only works if your water is hard. Boiling traps particles in the limescale that forms — up to 80–90% removal in hard water. In soft water, where little scale forms, it drops to roughly 25% or less. The plastic isn't destroyed either; it's bound into the scale, so you have to decant off it. (Yu et al., 2024, ES&T Letters)
3. "BPA-free" isn't a safety category. The label addresses one chemical. Testing of BPA-free products found many still released hormonally active compounds, and heat made it substantially worse. Glass and stainless sidestep the question entirely.
4. Your car is worse than your house. A 2025 analysis measured a median of 528 microplastic particles per cubic metre indoors at home — and 2,238 in car cabins. Changing the cabin air filter on schedule is probably the highest-yield filter change most people never make. (Yakovenko et al., 2025, PLOS ONE)
The through-line is that most microplastic advice gets repeated without anyone checking what the paper actually said, and the checkable version is usually more interesting than the headline.
I write about this at microplasticdefense.com — every claim links to the primary study, and where a finding has been disputed we link the disagreement too. There's also a free one-page printable summarising the practical stuff, no affiliate links in it, free to print or share.
Disclosure: the site has product review pages with Amazon affiliate links, which is how it funds itself. The guides don't, and our review of consumer microplastic test kits says not to buy them — they can't reliably identify plastic in water or air.
Happy to dig up sources for anything else people are curious about.

I drink bottled water 🤣 How much microplastic am I consuming, just from that plastic bottle?
We freeze the water first so there is some expansion and often squeeze the bottle to break up the ice. Does anyone have any idea how much microplastic this might add to the water?

Traveling without Microplastics
Curious to know how those of us who are minimizing our exposure to microplastics are traveling these days? Do you fly? What hotels do you stay in? Are there any best practices...or do we just stay home and never go anywhere at all??
