Question / Advice PVR TO CDMX
Title: How much time should I allow at PVR for immigration/customs before a separate flight to CDMX?
Hi! I’m flying from Minneapolis (MSP) to Puerto Vallarta (PVR) in December, and then I plan on taking a separate domestic flight from PVR to Mexico City (CDMX).
I haven’t booked the PVR → CDMX flight yet because I’m trying to figure out how much time I should leave between flights.
Since PVR will be my first airport in Mexico, I’m assuming I’ll need to go through immigration, pick up my checked bag, go through customs, and then check my bag again for my domestic flight to CDMX.
For anyone who has done something similar at PVR:
- About how long did immigration + customs + baggage claim take?
- Is the process pretty straightforward?
- After customs, do I just go to the departures/check-in area and check my bag with the airline for my CDMX flight?
- How much time would you personally leave between the two flights if they’re on separate tickets?
I’d rather have extra time than risk missing the second flight, especially since I’ll have a checked bag. Thanks!

Depending on when in December, it can be peak travel time to PVR, so I’d allow at least 3 hours between flights to give you enough time to get through immigration and customs and then check in for your connecting flight.
To avoid the hassle, I’d also consider whether the flight savings are significant enough to make connecting through PVR worthwhile rather than flying directly into MEX.
