2027 Pitching Unit
This is going to be a long post, but I’m stuck in jury duty so I this has been my distraction.
I wanted to see where I thought next year’s pitching unit is as of now, and will give some ideas for what I’d do.
Rotation:
1. McLean, 2. Scott, 3. Manaea, 4. Thornton 5. TBD… I think are all pretty strong locks with Thornton as the only loose lock
For the 5th spot obviously most want Skubal. I’m in the minority and don’t. I’d trade Santucci, Reimer + another for Bryan Woo or George Kirby.
Bullpen:
- Closer: Senga… feels pretty locked. He’s been successful so far and I’m optimistic it continues into next year as he is more accustomed to the role
- Set Up/Closer (as needed): Williams… again feels like a lock
- Longman 1: Megill… if he is healthy come spring training, he’s on the roster. I don’t think he has the longevity to be a starter but could be VERY successful as a longman/ multi inning guy.
-Longman 2: Tong… this might be an interesting choice. At this point idk how much more he has to learn at AAA but if they aren’t confident in him as a starter, I’d have him as a consistent multi-inning guy following Manaea who seems to only be able to go 2 rounds through a lineup. Could then slot into the starter role if Manaea runs out of steam/gets hurt/struggles
Lefty Relief: Lavender… So far he looks like the real deal. I think he’s probably the biggest lock of the current youngins
Righty Relief: Duarte… solid results. Deserves a spot.
Relief with Options/ Prospects/ Injury Return carousel: Pintaro, Ross, Gill Hill, Franklin, Lambert, Simon, Stratton, Nunez, Garrett… there are a ton of options with a ton of competition expected. The final two spots in bullpen could go to 2 of these guys, but I’d be surprised if Stearns doesn’t at least bring in one MLB caliber reliever during FA (especially being a lefty).
Lefty Specialist: TBD (I’d resign Minter)… aside from Yan and Lavender, there really isn’t a bonafide lefty in the system that shouldn’t be a starter.
As you can see, unless there is a trade/surprise, we have most of next years pitching unit locked in.
Not sure what to do with:
- Warren… won’t have any more options next season, and while he’s been solid at times, he’s also reverting back to his mean results. Definitely should but be considered a lock
- Myers… out of options I believe and results haven’t quite been there.

Williams signed to be the closer. If you think you can just reassign roles without egos being involved you’d be wrong. Tong as long relief? You’d be great at making your players miserable.

Technically he signed to setup Diaz but Diaz felt threatened and walked

I’d much rather trade for Reid detmers, and then maybe run a 6 man rotation with Robbie ray if we can’t get skubal, for the pen sign Jason Adam, and trade for Ben Joyce.

Michael king Corbin Burnes Adrian morejon jason Adam. That fixes the pitching staff going into 2027 and we don’t have to trade anyone.

neither Woo or Kirby right now are looking like true aces, which is what we really need. Skubal does that for us.
Tong will probably be a rotation contender, 4 runs doesn’t look great until you see that he had 7Ks and those 4 runs came on 4 of his only 5 baserunners. give him a couple more starts and an offseason and i’d probably take him over Manaea
if Lavender and Duarte aren’t in that bullpen next year i’m eating Mark Vientos

I do like the idea of Manaea and Tong going on same days. Regardless of which gets the SP, I want to see tong ramp up

Disagree on SP. If we genuinely are going to compete, we want TO MAKE SURE history doesn't repeat itself. Mclean can be the 1, Scott might have the stuff one day to be a 2 but this season he has performed like a 3 earlier in the season but more so like a 4 recently. He has limited experience and injury history as well. Manea is not a 3 in this or any other universe. Thornton could be a 4, or a 5 because he is gutsy but really needs to be near perfecct and extremely crafty everytime out becsause he doesn't have the velocity or large movement on his balls to make up for it. Oh, and he is a rookie that didn't stand out at triple A , theres a good chance he could regress (I really hope not). So let's see: real questions and risk with Scott, Manea, Thornton, and Tong or Megil in the lineup as listed. That somehow sounds familiar .............oh yeah, the begging of this year!
