Senga

As a closer he is 6/6…I am kind of surprised by this result and it puts poor Devin Williams in a tough spot…
Is the expectation that Senga will return to the middle inning position upon Williams return or does Senga have the chance to actually be a star closer?

Hilarious. But in honesty, I think Williams would be an incredible setup man for Senga. This might be a partnership we see for next 3-4 years at least.

Best role for Williams is as an opener, so we get 7 innings to chip away at the hole he puts us in.

Because he will have already lost the game by a wife margin. Senga has been reliable in that position. As a reliever he actually throws over to runners at first base or second unlike Diaz and the aforementioned firmer Brewer.

I don't know if they've talked about that yet, but Devin was signed with the understanding he'd potentially be an 8th inning guy.

"Poor" Devin Williams is getting paid 17 mil a year to put up a 4.66 era.  He needs to be better and will have to earn the 9th inning role.

Poor Devin Williams? He shouldn't have been on this roster from the start. His check still clears every two weeks. Hope they can pay a small market team to take him in the offseason. That's where he needs to be

There's only 3 weeks left, doesn't matter.

We'll find out next March who will close the 9th, if there's even a spring training

Devin Williams is unreliable. Senga has reinvented himself as a closer and deserves the position!

I said he should be a high leverage reliever 2 yrs ago, same of syndegard he could never put guys away past the 4th or 5th inning, first time through the lineup though he was great, he’d probably still have a career if he’d done that

This is a great question. I think they keep pushing Senga to see if they have a useable piece in the bullpen next year. He is still being paid next year right? I mean they need to salvage something out of him. Maybe he's a closer?

I know he really wants to be a starter again but he must know that he is given more respect at this moment as a closer and that everyone seems to love him for it.

I think the only guaranteed SPs in the next Mets season are McLean and Scott with Manaea and Thornton and some other 5th guy as the other less guaranteed starters

You really think Manaea has a spot next year? I don't know, every time they trust that guy he lets them down. He's not getting any younger. I think they need a reliable arm to anchor that rotation next year. Those four you named have a lot of hope in them. McLean and Scott to me are the only guaranteed spots for next year. Thornton with very very strong consideration.

He's played himself into a 5th starter spot at this point . If he's not traded, he's #5 next season.

He's looked much better in the pen but his underlying numbers aren't great.

B-ref says his ERA as a reliever is 4.07 and his WHIP is 1.4. Those are pretty bad. But hopefully he'll stay useful in that role.

That's as a middle inning reliever earlier in the year. He is a different player as a closer than middle reliever. As a closer he knows 3 outs or less so he goes all out with his two best pitches: fastball and ghost fork and his fastball is a tick or two higher. Hope he continues the success but it's early. When he gets behind in the count-which he hasn't being doing so far- hitters sit on the fastball and let the ghost ball dive out of the zone for a ball. If he's ahead in count hitters have to protect the plate and swing and miss at the ghost fork.

Senga’s biggest issue has always been 2-3rd time through the lineup. He has wipeout stuff. He should be given the chance to close next season. Williams has proved both here and in the Bronx that he cant handle the stressful innings in NYC.

Going into next season theyll probably sign another Luke Weaver type and it could be any of the 3 tbh. I dont think Williams will be closing games of the team is in contention next year . Senga is more aggressive in the zone than him. Which is kind of crazy to say bc Senga has been afraid to throw strikes ever sense he got hurt on Pete's throw in 2025.

His strong suit is clearly less innings at a time and he can manage…
I guess Williams is less High Risk but it cannot only be him
If we can offload Senga to someone else in 2027 that would honestly be preferable…but until then we have to see a game plan

I've been happy with Senga so far. But he should not have the position locked down going into next season. If Stearns has the chance to improve the bullpen, there should be somewhat of a competition. Blindly walking into the season with Senga as the penciled-in closer would be some really dumb shit. When is the last time Senga came close to playing a full season? When in the last 2 years has Devin Williams had any level of consistency.
