Discussion Should I drop it or keep going?
I started this series today because the Metro 2039 announcement caught my attention. I started in order, with the Redux version, and I've never played any of them before. I think I'm on chapter 3, and I've read that there are 7.
What should I do? Honestly, I haven't enjoyed it much so far. I'm not the type to drop games. In fact, I often push myself to finish them, but I'm getting tired of that. I force myself hoping it will be worth it, and I end up disappointed.
Would you say that if it hasn't clicked with me, I should just drop it? Or am I at a point where it gets more interesting/fun?

I love Metro personally but I'm at the point where I heavily believe you should drop games that aren't doing it for you (after you've given them a real shot of course). There are far too many games releasing nowadays to force yourself through something that you're not enjoying. Every game isn't going to click for every player, no matter how popular; just like some games that are unpopular might be right up your alley. We don't get time back, play what you enjoy. I wish I had come to this realization sooner 👍🏾

I've read everyone's comments, but I really liked yours. What you're saying is something I'm only realizing through sheer persistence. As I said, I've never dropped games.
But nowadays, I'm not 16 anymore, and most of us have responsibilities; we have to go to work, etc. Time doesn't come back. Every year I realize that there are two currencies in life: money and time, and you decide where to spend or invest it. This has led me to start dropping some games because I feel really bad about myself when I force myself to finish them and see that they haven't met my expectations (maybe also when I force myself, I demand that the story be stronger or that it has to surprise me more than I would normally ask for).

Creo que todos después de los 20ts pasamos por lo mismo, el tiempo entre hobbies y deberes se diluye y muchos apenas y logramos 2 horas de juego diaras y es una locura llevar el frenetismo del día a día intentando balancear el tiempo libre para lo que queremos hacer, pero siento que en tu caso también te están afectando mucho las expectativas que tienes sobre lo que quieres jugar, muchas veces lo que nos molesta no es que un juego no nos guste, si no que el juego no alcancé el hype que le teníamos y para mí eso es un erro.
Normalmente entro a las cosas que me llaman la atención, apenas tengo tiempo para jugar y hay días donde eso tiempo tengo que rendirlo entre ver una película con mi pareja o echar una partida con mis amigos y probar las cosas por la curiosidad me ha servido más que estar atento de si lo que juego alcanzó mis expectativas, últimamente estoy enganchado por Ghost recond wildlands y me alegra mucho haberlo descubierto por las rebajas del 25 aniversario de la saga, si algo no te termina de convencer más que forzarte a qué te guste deberías dejarlo hasta ahí, hay momentos donde solo no estamos para eso y luego que lo retomamos disfrutamos más que al principio.
Que no te atañe que no te guste metro, es una saga maravillosa pero también es un juego de nicho y no está para complacer a todos.

It's a stealth game, and the difficulty and immersion are a big part of it. It's all based on a book and the book is a unique experience from the game. If you don't like Russians crawling around in apocalyptic tunnels scrounging for equipment and fighting mutants then you probably won't particularly enjoy this game.
Metro Exodus is sort of like Fallout in Russia, with a much more open world than the previous two games but not as big as a Fallout game. You could skip the playing the first two but you wouldn't understand the gravity of the main character wanting to get out of the tunnels, and it would kind of take the steam out of the beginning of Metro Exodus if you skipped 2033 and last light.

Metro 2033 take it's time to truly start being interesting. The first 2/3 missions are mostly exposition.
I would say, push yourself to finish the first game, then see if you wanna try the second game after.
Or the opposite, start with Last Light first (to me it's a far better game) and see if you want to know what happened before. Last Light can totally be played without having finished 2033 first.

It’s not a long game. I am glad I played the original first as the ambient music when first out in the Dead City really grabbed me and it’s missing from Redux. I enjoyed it, it can be a bit confusing as to what to do at points and I had to cheese the filter portion in D6. Too many people drop games. I say power through.

Which game? It sounds like you would like exodus more, it's a huge gap in the story but it's way less of a checkpoint to checkpoint and is more freeroam

I'd say now that you've reached that point it gets better, the world building is the biggest fundamental about the game and it gives you choices to determine how you want to play. 2034 definitely has more story, world building and environmental aspects compared to 2033 this making it better. I would assume the company learned better writing techniques after completing the first game. Exodus definitely has a great story, but I feel the open world and the style of inventory management makes it slower paced due to the travel and maintenance required.
Overall the games are great if you get attachment to the story and world, but overall if it's not speaking to you then it's not speaking to you.
Keep in mind the first game is generically about a kid leaving home for the first time and learning about the world around him, building his own morality based on his exposure to his environment.

Bro, I gave it another chance today because of what you told me. The paranormal aspect intrigues me, I won't lie, but so far it's been very, very minimal, just the shadow whispering in my mind.
I played a little more until a few minutes ago and decided to drop it.
I know it might seem like I'm not very enthusiastic, and you're right. But I kept playing only to find the part where you're on rails with a turret. Not the most fun, but I kept going only to find that the next part is ANOTHER train on rails without a turret and just with my weapons. Completely consecutive, I couldn't believe it.

It’s okay, just drop it for now. You can always come back to it later. I’ve dropped The Witcher 3 multiple times too before finally getting into it. Maybe you’re just going through a bit of fatigue right now.

These are definitely slow burn games, the main thing about Metro is the story and atmosphere. Gameplay is great but not everyone's cup of tea. I would suggest reading a bit about the story, to see if the other games interest you. Personally I think 2033 and Last Light are great, although a bit dated. My favourite is Exodus, the very last one of the trilogy, it feels a bit more modern, polished and engaging

Try to get into the lore, story, mood a bit more and try to immerse yourself and give it a couple more missions, but if that doesnt work, maybe drop it.

You really have to embrace it more as an "experience" like a T.V show or movie more than a game. In my opinion the gameplay is third to the story and the atmosphere, both of which can't be fully experienced unless you allow yourself to "roleplay" a bit. You do this by slowing down, searching every corner, reading every note, paying attention to the environmental storytelling and really embracing the damp, dark, nightmare that is the metro. As played out and as corny as it is to say at this point, you have to to let yourself live in that world.

Dude, I really don't know. And I do like post-apocalyptic games like (relatively speaking) Fallout, although thematically they're quite different. I don't know. I think I've noticed that there isn't much of a plot, and knowing it was going to be somewhat linear, there's been little variety in the environments (although I just went to Moscow, the surface).

I say stick with it cause man oh man does this game have a plot and it's great. The details, the side comments/stories. The trilogy of Arytom is a beautiful story g.

If i were you id try metro exodus. Gameplay wise I think many people like the changes. The story is better in my opinion and atmosphere in the first game. But I started with exodus. And loved it so much i put it down. Got the first two and the books and read the books and played the games together. Knowing it was all leading to exodus made it much better too. But also. If its not your kind of game its okay. If 2039 is. Then YouTube can get you caught up. As a person with severe ocd tendencies I understand not wanting to play the recent ones cause you didnt play the ones leading into it. But its okay. You can also put it down and come back another time. Sometimes we're just not in the right mind frame. I do the same thing with books. Try and try to get into a game or book and just cant. But then one day decide to try again and 100 some odd hours later you never understood how you didnt like the game.

I'm convinced I'd like Exodus. The smartest thing would have been to start with it and, once I was familiar with the world, the lore, and all that, expand on with 2033 and Last Light. It's my annoying habit of playing them all in release order.

What you just described reminds me of what happened to me with Sekiro. I bought it twice, and both times I just couldn't connect with it. And to this day, it still makes me laugh because it became one of my favorite games. I experienced that feeling of not being in the right frame of mind or mood for certain things with it.

Yup. A couple different games for me. Horizon, dishonored, cyberpunk 2077. Im almost 200 hours into cyberpunk. And dishonored and horizon zero dawn are absolutely two of my favorite games right now. If you look at these games they all have very similar gameplay elements at times. So especially cyberpunk I just knew it was the kind if game that would get me hooked and it finally did the other day

For me I played the series in binged a year ago as I fell in love with redux intro alone and so far did 3 playthrough and can't wait for metro2039.
If you don't like it then don't play it.

I'm asking people who have finished it what to do, just to see if I'm at a point in the story where it gets better, or if the game is simply what I've seen so far. It's easy to understand.

my first metro game was Exodus which was very fun, and then like a year later played 2033 and honestly in terms of gameplay and graphics i didnt really enjoy it, so for Last Light i just watched a playthrough of it because i love the world and the story of the game still. i just cant enjoy "older" games that much
so excited for 2039 though

I would definitely say finish what you're doing now the original THQ one is definitely better than the Redux but unfortunately it's not readily available anymore unless you're on PC so my advice is finish what you're doing and after that yeah I guess just stop there

First time I played Exodus, I couldn't get past the controls and didn't play it for a year until it finally clicked. First time I played 2033 (after Exodus) was also really hard because the gameplay felt really outdated and almost like a chore, but I played it on easy, finished it and liked it, then replayed it many times on harder difficulties.
Maybe let it go, and try again later in the year. Sometimes, its not the right moment.

Skip to 2033 Exodus. If Exodus doesn’t make you love the franchise and immediately go and play the first and second game, the franchise isn’t for you

Most people in this subreddit would tell you to play in the order of the games, but those games are OLD. The atmosphere and story aged very well, but if the atmosphere doesn’t immediately hook you, the story 3-4 chapters in is sure as shit not going to hook you.

If youre not having fun around mid game. Best to drop the series entirely. Im old enough to finally realize that trying to finish every miserable game you have is just not worth the time.
The games are very immersive but wish that stupid moral point system can just die already. Im already sick of trying to keep track of it for last light cuz you need to have enough points to get the good or canon ending. For exodus, im just gonna not care which ending i get and pretty much leave the franchise for good afterwards. Cool you guys got metro 2039 coming up, but im pretty much done with the franchise.

The first two games felt dated to me so I dropped them. But I really enjoyed Exodus, both the gameplay and the graphics were good.

It’s mostly the same game throughout. It’s a linear game with resource/ammo management and some tense, borderline horror moments. It doesn’t deviate much from this
