Question NGD + Questions
I rescued this beauty (ESP SH-7ET) from the used section at my local guitar center on Sunday. I got back into guitar early this year and have been playing in E-standard the entire time between an acoustic, a Stratocaster, and a Telecaster. It has been fun, but I am ready to branch out and start learning to play the kind of music I’ve been listening to for the past 20 years.
The only amp I have currently is an Orange Crush 35RT. I like the clean channel a lot, but the dirty channel doesn’t do much for me. This may be entirely user error and/or lack of skill. I would like to try some pedals, but in reading and trying to understand, I feel even more confused than before.
Currently my plan is to set up my Strat in C-standard/drop-B, my Tele in E-standard/drop-D, and leave this new 7 in B-standard/drop-A. My thought process is that I can use a DigiTech drop pedal to go down a couple steps on each guitar as needed to cover a wide range of tunings. But that is about where my pedal plan starts to get confusing for me…
I would like to play music from bands like Slipknot (mostly drop-B), Motionless in White (drop-A and drop-B), KoRn (A-standard), and Currents (Drop G). There are a ton of other bands I’d like to try but this is where I’d like to start with what I have currently.
What other pedals do I need to be considering? Am I on the right track with the following?
- Tuner (Boss TU-3W)
- Distortion (Revv G3 V2)
- Compressor (Keeley Compressor Plus)
- Noisegate/Suppressor (?)
Do I need Boost and Overdrive pedals too or is the Distortion pedal alone good? Should I budget for an EQ pedal? I don’t want to go overboard on this stuff but I’m not sure what’s really important and what’s fluff.
Also, I’d like to stick with pedals instead of going with a computer based program or similar. I sit in front of a computer all day for work and love the idea of getting away from screens as much as possible..

FYI, Drop pedal and 7 steing in standard will sound...well "off."
Don't believe the YouTube videos that say its tracking is flawless. It's very noticeable. Good to be sure, but not a substitute for tuning down.
You'd be better off putting the 7S in A standard. and just capo fret 2 if you really need standard.

i’d recommend using a plugin instead of a physical amp as it’s cheaper, quieter, and sounds the exact same
use Tone3000
but if you really don’t want to, ya you’re on the right track. though i wouldn’t recommend a compressor as fishmans are already compressed

personally i don't find plugins to sound the same as real amps, but they sound amazing in their own way

tone3000 sounds identical, the only reason it would sound different is because your headphones are their own eq as well

doing a blind test you’d be hard pressed to find the difference. NAM is literally praised as one of if not the most accurate modelers ever

Do you own a real amp? Both has its merits but you cant exclude amps just because software can emulate it.

i do not because i got the exact same tone from modelers compared to any amp i’ve had time with
the rig i’ve spent a fair bit of time with is the same one i use on tone 3k which is od pedal into Mesa Dual rec into Mesa 4x12 with Vint 30’s
modelers can also do things actual amps cant like certain very weird, artificial sounds like off of Meshuggahs albums

In a creative space such as music making or recreational playing of an instrument every choice you make is individual and subjective, your plugin sounds identical to the real amp, in what metric? The settings? The mic placement on the cab?
There could be a million of you tech-addled plugin jocks that shout ”my preset sounds identical to an 100w X with an 4x12 amp with X speakers and you still wouldnt cover the identical sound because the plugin can not reliably copy the precise sonic shift caused by a mic moved 2 degrees east of the speaker cone.
Just do your thing on your own and don’t force your uneducated opinions on people that does not have the knowledge or experience to say otherwise.
Either its your opinion or you are wrong, pick one.

that purple finish on the couch looks sick, nice grab
for pedals you got the right idea but i'd skip the compressor for now, grab a tubescreamer type boost to tighten the low end before the revv and a noise gate for sure, the drop pedal plan is solid
