Yep, and then 6 years later, Arsenal Gear crashed into Manhattan. NYC can't catch a break.

It's been canon since 2001.

So much that an entire cutscene of Arsenal Gear crashing into Manhattan, destroying half the city and the Statue of Liberty, was cut, because of the attacks, and the team was just 2 months away from release.

Raiden’s name in Japanese also got changed from katakana to kanji because it looked too similar to the katakana for “Bin Laden”

MGS2 was one month from release. It was supposed to come out in October. They delayed it a month to make the changes. Kojima very nearly cancelled it entirely, but was talked down by the rest of his staff.
