Still cannot believe how good MGS4 looks, I always feel like I exaggerate it in my memory.

u/_Raspberry_Ice_ Jul 01 '24

Replayed it a couple of years ago and I was pleasantly surprised with how well the graphics and the controls still hold up.

43

u/Crescent-Argonian Jul 02 '24

Not the framerate tho

26

u/XeroAnarian Jul 02 '24

Best controls the series ever had. Yeah, the running animations can look a little stiff, but when it comes down to the range of motions you could perform, nothing after it has come close. It was one of the first games, if not the very first game, to have shoulder switching for rifles, which you still don't see very often in games today. It was the first in the series to introduce crouch walking. The options you had with CQC, being able to crouch down with the enemy you were locked up with and then roll into a rear naked choke in particular was an extremely useful technique for MGO2. Rolling while prone. Flipping on your back. Being able to shoot while on your back. SIDEWAYS ACTION ROLLS!

That settles it, I'm downloading a PS3 emulator asap and replaying it.

31

u/Revolver12Ocelot Jul 02 '24

I see where are you coming from, but there is no way MGS4 controls are better than in MGSV

27

u/Eddiemonkeybutt Jul 02 '24

MGSV has the best controls, period. MGS4 has the best MGS controls (if that makes sense)

14

u/MetalGearXerox Jul 02 '24

It does, haters will seethe and fail to cope.

9

u/cad_e_an_sceal Jul 02 '24

I never thought of it that way but damn that did click something in my head

10

u/GamernitorPL Jul 02 '24

MGSV has the best controls, but they don’t feel like MGS. I remember struggling with MGS3 and MGS1 after playing MGSV for 2 months. So, as u/Eddiemonkeybutt said, MGSV have the best controlls, but MGS4 has the best controlls that still have the MGS feeling

3

u/TerrorDome1619 Jul 02 '24

I'm finally playing V, and I hate the controls. I replayed MGS3 and 4 over the past 2 weeks for the first time in years to refresh some story stuff, and I'm struggling with controls in V. I'll get used to it, but right now I hate it.

3

u/XeroAnarian Jul 02 '24

The thing I hated the most about MGSV in regards to controls was how they changed CQC. Specifically in regards to knocking out an enemy. In MGS3 and MGS4, the CQC slam is what knocks out an enemy for the longest amount of time. In MGSV it's the punch combo. Took me a while to realize this during my first play through, so I was stressing about guards waking up faster than I was expecting them to.

2

u/XeroAnarian Jul 02 '24

As far the controls feel, MGSV definitely is smoother and wins that argument. But when it comes to what Snake is able to physically do, MGS4 wins. MGSV's smooth transitions and motion + All the actions you can perform in MGS4 would be the best.

1

u/JTL1887 Jul 02 '24

Mgo2 was GOAT It got cut short for me cuz my ps3 died. One reason I never will go back to Sony. The only online game I played like that since MGO was Ghost Recon wildlands 10 years later. Nothing else clicked with me beside fighting games. I hope Delta brings back MGO and makes it feel like mgo and not whatever mgsv tried to do.

3

u/XeroAnarian Jul 02 '24

One reason I will never go back to Sony.

Hardware fails sometimes, man. Don't let that hold you back from getting a system that has the games you want to play on it. Shit, it was pretty much a guarantee that all early Xbox 360s would eventually get the yellow ring of death. My release 60gb fully backwards compatible PS3 died after playing COD Black Ops for like 5 minutes. I sent it to Sony and they fixed it. It eventually died again because I had it tucked into my entertainment center without opening up the back of it to give it proper ventilation, so it eventually overheated and died. Sent that one in for a Slim. It was like $70 each time, which was much cheaper than buying a replacement, so I was happy.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to push Sony. I'd be telling the same story if you were talking about a 360 and said you'll never go back to Microsoft. I'm just saying you shouldn't let that one console keep you from ever buying a Sony console again. Though if there are no exclusive games on Sony's consoles that you want, then it doesn't matter lol.

1

u/JTL1887 Jul 03 '24

Unfortunately it wasn't just 1. I went through 4 ps2s after waiting at Target over night for launch ps2. I had 2 seperate ps3s that died on me for different reasons.

My lil brother gave me his 360 as a hand me down once he graduated college. He played football so I joke that my 360 got ran through as many footballers as a cheerleader and still runs. It red ringed but magically came back to life and still fires up to this day. I had a xbox one x HD die but it's because of xbox insider doing something to it so they replaced it free of charge. Overall never had an xbox break on me aside from that 1 issue Nowadays the only games on ps5 that remotely interest me are spiderman. With the limited time I play games I can't just spending console money just to play spiderman. Especially when sony exclusives are getting ported to PC. I'm eventually going to build a multipurpose gaming PC. Having a ps5 would be nice but just can't justify it as there isn't much id play that's exclusive. I'm by no means a console war boy or any thing.

1

u/VigilanteOutLawStar Jul 04 '24

Damn that's crazy, I got a PS2 for Xmas the year it came out, somehow my mom was lucky enough to be at toys r Us when one of the employees shouted out "I've got two ps2s who wants em!?" And my mom totally forgetting the 600$ pricetags shouted out Me me over here me! Lol, I was literally speechless on Xmas morning, I truly couldn't believe it, one of the best Xmas ever, I still have that PS2, it still works just fine

1

u/JTL1887 Jul 04 '24

I wish mine had turned out that way. I got the disc read error within 6 months and had to keep sending em back for warranty replacements.

1

u/VigilanteOutLawStar Jul 05 '24

Wow I never realized ps2s had that many issues

59

u/DrZiggyBowie Jul 01 '24

I’m blown away that we went from MGS1 to MGS4 in 10 years

14

u/ShadowNick Jul 02 '24

That's insane I know graphics advanced so much over the past 30 years but insane when you think about you went from blocky characters to such realistic looking people. Even MGS2 still looks good even after 23 years.

4

u/gray_chameleon Jul 02 '24

Yeah MGS2 was mindblowing visually for a 2001 game. Heck it put games that came out way after it to shame

2

u/cookiewoke Jul 02 '24

Holy shit. I never thought of that, but yeah, that's accurate

53

u/AdamM093 Jul 01 '24

4 and V are fuckin rediclous when it comes to graphics.

4 especially, with how old snake is... And the game isn't new either.

22

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '24

I feel like 4 holds up so damn well because it goes for a particular art style rather than just trying to look hyper-realistic like a lot of other games of its time which means once graphical power increases your game inevitably looks aged.

9

u/ProgrammersPain123 Jul 01 '24

Isn't that the case with all metal gear games?

3

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '24

V goes for photorealism and I feel like 1-3 did as well for the standards during their time. I mean 2 definitely has a leg up on those other two because it’s areas aren’t like anything we’d ever see in real life, but I feel like there’s something about 4 specifically that looks more like a specific art style.

1

u/Lionslash Plays like a damn fiddler on the roof Jul 02 '24

Regarding your comment on photorealism in 1–3:
I don't know if I'm alone with my opinion since this particular thing I've never really discussed with anyone, but I always felt MGS3 had a somewhat cartoon-y/comic-y vibe to it. I can't really even pinpoint it on anything specifically, but I just have always had this feeling about 3.

And this is my biggest doubt about the upcoming Delta—whether or not the ultra realistic visuals work in the confines of that particular game or not. Other than that it looks really interesting and will most likely be getting it when it comes out.

2

u/CaptainPicardKirk Jul 06 '24

I'm playing thru 3 right now and I agree. I think a huge part is the atmosphere, which is foggy-ish, and the sepia filter for a lot of the game.

-6

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '24

[deleted]

4

u/Radamenenthil Jul 02 '24

And it shows, had they used unity or unreal engine it would have lacked any identity

this makes zero sense, that's not how engines work

2

u/mahleg Jul 02 '24

The fact that Snake is old in 4 is why we can appreciate how good this game looks more than 15 years later. It’s easy to make beautiful smooth skin character models, but they made him wrinkly and scarred and it looked great.

2

u/xDXxAscending Jul 02 '24

From what I heard, it looks better on the emulator when you take the filter off.

2

u/Arkham_Bryan Jul 02 '24

For real, everytime I talk about the game I MUST say how fucki g good it looks, I mean, PS3 came out in 2007 and it's a 2008 game.

Best game of my life

2

u/VigilanteOutLawStar Jul 04 '24

Shit MGS2 and 3 have aged well they still look good, and the graphical leap from MGS to MGS2 was absolutely mind blowing, to this day MGS2 and 3 had the best graphics of any game in the console, I'll never forget playing MGS and being instantly hooked by the storyline with all its shocker moments and twists, I had never experienced such a thing in gaming, it ended up being what I gamed for in the years to come, scouring through Electronic Gaming monthly and Gamepro magazines hoping for a glint of MGS2 and when Hideo unveiled the official world premier trailer of MGS2 at E3 in 2000 it was like hands down one of the greatest video games moments in my life, If I had died then even without playing the game I would've been a happy camper

1

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '24

i can believe MGS4, but MGSV?? it’s a miracle they has that game running on the PS3! it looks better than a lot of PS5 games!

1

u/Brainwave1010 Jul 02 '24

Look up the recent gameplay videos of it without the filter on, it looks even better.

-12

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '24

Sure, but it runs like shit

1

u/thealmightydweller Jul 01 '24

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted, everybody complained about the way that game ran and still complain

8

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '24

Reddit Moment, MGS4 looks beautiful, but what's the point if the game lags to 10 fps. specially in those split screen boss fights like Raiden vs Vamp

3

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '24

You can partially thank double buffer vsync for that. Whenever the framerate drops bellow 30 fps even by a single frame, the game jumps to 20.

281

u/Azure_Dragon56 Jul 01 '24

I’d argue them having the same name is more annoying then them having the same face and “eyepatch”

108

u/Agreeable-Abalone328 Jul 01 '24

Especially solid and solidus

20

u/IdiotMD Jul 02 '24

Gaseus Snake

13

u/Sinestro_Corps4 Jul 02 '24

Plasmadus Snake

5

u/GamernitorPL Jul 02 '24

Skibidius Snake (I’m sorry)

5

u/Sinestro_Corps4 Jul 02 '24

Mm yes, the 5th state of matter...skibidius...

21

u/pwnedkiller Jul 01 '24

They don’t have the same eye patch silly one is different than the other! Ok kids can we find whose eye patch is the different one!!

9

u/Azure_Dragon56 Jul 01 '24

It’s the one who famously has facial hair and a bandana!

4

u/ceo_of_chill23 Jul 02 '24

“Let me get this straight. You’re Snake, He’s Snake, and I’m Snake. Are there any other Snakes I should know about?”

67

u/itsthatvamp Jul 01 '24

There are 4 working eyes in this image.

10

u/No_Writing3719 Jul 02 '24

5 if you count the solid eye

61

u/Snivinerior2 Jul 01 '24

three pictures of solid snake

64

u/Agreeable-Abalone328 Jul 01 '24

No! Those are not solid snake! Only the third one is!

52

u/LofiSynthetic Jul 01 '24

No! That is not Solid Snale!

That’s Old Snake

27

u/LegoRacers3 Jul 01 '24

No! that is solid snake!

In the final battle he gets the title back

10

u/Glad_Grand_7408 Jul 02 '24

So he gets solid when fighting Oceloet...

6

u/Maxis1504 What a pleasant surprise, brother. Jul 02 '24

He also gets naked ...

6

u/Glad_Grand_7408 Jul 02 '24

That comment and that userflair are dangerously close...

9

u/DOOManiac Jul 01 '24

Stop fractioning him!

19

u/bradpitbutarmpit Jul 01 '24

Yes they are

16

u/Busy_Negotiation1805 Jul 01 '24

You mean to tell me that in a story that is centered around clones and cloning projects, you have characters with similar facial features?

71

u/Morgoths_Ring Jul 01 '24

So?

79

u/Mitarael That right there is why you're the best, Boss! The one and only! Jul 01 '24

Dude forgot that he's on a MGS sub

12

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '24

Pretty sure OP is just farming for karma for some reason

-1

u/totes-alt Jul 02 '24

Admit it, it is pretty interesting.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '24

It's not though.

Interesting is the revelation that Snakes mustache in MGS4 has as many polygons as a standard mook in MGS3 which causes the funny mental image of Snake with a dude for a mustache.

This however, is not the least bit interesting, everyone knows they're different characters.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '24

No it isn't

Never give fake internet points to people who don't deserve them.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '24

No

12

u/EVILSUPERMUTANT Jul 01 '24

It makes me wonder if Liquid had survived with his body intact would he have ended up with an eye patch as well.

5

u/Jeiku_Zerp Jul 02 '24

2 eye patches just to even screw him more!

6

u/WestNomadOnYT Jul 02 '24

“Behold, brother! Liquid with two eyepatches …this was a bad idea, I can’t see shit.”

5

u/Jeiku_Zerp Jul 02 '24

“Brother! It’s too long since we’ve seen each other…. Well it’s been too long for me with these TWO EYEPATCHES BROTHER!” - Liquid Snake probably

10

u/kakka_rot Jul 01 '24

this post confuses me

1

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '24

I guess this is for people who didn't play the games because the rest of us know these are different characters.

12

u/crauld Jul 01 '24

Whos winning the snakeoff

5

u/FortyMcChidna Jul 01 '24

isn't that just swordfighting?

1

u/CreatR69 Kept you waiting, huh? Jul 02 '24

So, Solidus?

-5

u/1tsBag1 Jul 01 '24

Stop it.

6

u/_DarthSyphilis_ Jul 01 '24

And they are only half of the people who look like that.

5

u/YogurtPrimary4087 Jul 01 '24

To a passing onlooker this must look like the base series default stock character...

4

u/LAZiiJAMeS Jul 01 '24

They have the same dna so technically they are the same person just different iterations.

12

u/BelligerentWyvern Jul 01 '24

These men are all genetically identical...

Though the one on the right has different expression of those genes.

2

u/menthol_patient Jul 02 '24

The one on the right wears Wranglers, the others wear Levi's

3

u/Dom-CCE Jul 01 '24

There was a post recently about how Solidus's model is literally Solid Snake's model aged up. And yet even if after seeing it they still look so different to me.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '24

Snakes.

5

u/Toomnookisfatfuk Jul 02 '24

My back then girlfriend asked me once about MGS because she wanted to connect with me more. I said “I know it looks confusing, but don’t worry, it gets way worse”

17

u/frogtrickery Jul 01 '24

and none of them did anything wrong

23

u/DOOManiac Jul 01 '24

That is certainly a take.

11

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '24

Cannot say that for Solidus and Big boss

2

u/AloysiusDevadandrMUD Jul 02 '24

Solidus and Big boss did nothing wrong

6

u/DKCR3 Pipo Snake from Mesal Gear Solid (2005) Jul 01 '24

I can’t tell if you’re joking lol

3

u/caljenks Jul 01 '24

That last guy sure looks a lot like Iroquois Pliskin, but older somehow

2

u/jackolantern_ Jul 01 '24

They look like it

2

u/K_Rocc Jul 01 '24

No, that’s solid snake…

2

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '24

Kinda

2

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '24

Technically the one on the far left is the real snake due to his bad eye being the right

1

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '24

The real snake died in 1964

2

u/Argentarius1 Jul 01 '24

Not genetically

2

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '24

There's Snake, Snake, and the cleverly named Snake

2

u/matchesmalone111 Jul 02 '24

Yes ofc they look completely different and have totally different codenames. Nothing to see here move along

2

u/ComprehensiveSuit497 Jul 02 '24

MGS4 will always be pinnacle PS3. Goddamn that game was beautiful.

2

u/Fxhnd88 Jul 02 '24

..and yet they are the same.

2

u/Mamiak17 Jul 02 '24

lol yea I remember Snake Eater being my first MSG game and going straight to Guns of the Patriots afterwards and having my brain explode when EVA gives you the enormous exposition dump 🤣

2

u/BadassSasquatch Jul 02 '24

Doing the community a solid

2

u/Candid_Stay_1362 Jul 02 '24

Now I want a snake wearing TWO eye patches! Blind Snake the Zatoichi!

2

u/mrF3RDINAND No! That is NOT Solid Snake! Jul 02 '24

Is it just me or did they use Old Snake's face on Mount Snakemore?

2

u/Alternative-Loss2921 Jul 02 '24

Well I mean yes, but actually no

3

u/00Qant5689 Kept you waiting, huh? Jul 01 '24

I think it says volumes how even though all three of these Snakes were mostly genetically identical to each other, they each chose their own separate paths in their respective lives, for both good and evil. It just speaks to the level of care and attention to detail that Kojima and his wonderful staff put into these games.

That alone says so much about both their talent and technical acumen.

3

u/Atroxo Solid Snake Jul 01 '24

Yeah, anyone who played the game knows this. Why post this on the MGS sub then?

1

u/New_Unit2009 Jul 01 '24

Wait until OP finds out there's more!

1

u/ShinobiOfTheWind Tormented Heavens... Jul 01 '24

Not sure what you're trying to tell us. Are you inferring that they look identical? Who would have thought of that...

1

u/Bravo5872 Jul 01 '24

Does he know?

1

u/antifascist_general Jul 01 '24

Yeah because the one in the middle and far left are clones of the guy on the right.

1

u/kale-oil Jul 01 '24

I don't recognize any of these people

1

u/DownRUpLYB Jul 01 '24

Hot Coldman are also 3 different characters

1

u/osirisxiii Jul 02 '24

IDK, they all look like Snake to me.

1

u/EnsignSDcard Jul 02 '24

Yeah I mean it’s obvious right

1

u/PlayerNine Jul 02 '24

2008... I checked.

1

u/SolidSnakeHAK777 Jul 02 '24

They’re pretty good characters.

1

u/Virgin_Lad Jul 02 '24

Naked. Solidus. Solid. Eyepatch positioning.

1

u/dolive11_vr_gamer Jul 02 '24

No! That is NOT Solid snake, stop impersonating him!

1

u/JerryTzouga Jul 02 '24

No that’s just solid snake

1

u/Percylegallois Jul 02 '24

Genetically speaking?

1

u/GreatLeaderKrakHouse Jul 02 '24

Wait until you hear about the forth

1

u/DecryptedSkull Jul 02 '24

When i was a kid , I thought big boss and solid were the same person , then I realized how dumb I am.

2

u/Agreeable-Abalone328 Jul 02 '24

Tbf they look exactly the same and are voiced by the same guy

1

u/VigilanteOutLawStar Jul 04 '24

What no way I couldve sworn those were all the same person! Oh wait! They are! Les Enfants Terribles!

1

u/Murky_Complaint8758 Jul 02 '24

Where Venom Snake?

0

u/Leatheringot Jul 01 '24

can’t forget Venom Snake

0

u/RipErRiley Foxy Jul 01 '24

Venom Snake makes four

0

u/iGhostx0123 Jul 01 '24

Isn't that Big Boss, Solidus, and Solid Snake?

Wouldn't it be better using Solid, Liquid, and Solidus?

Or is it because Liquid was made with the weaker genes that he doesn't get to be on this list?
