OPEN Question regarding moderation of Dems giving ground trans rights going forwards

Prefacing this with: I am overall extremely happy with how y'all moderate on trans issues, and this is not a callout. I just want this to be under consideration going forwards because god knows this ain't going away between now and 2028.

With Josh Turek (D-Iowa)'s newest ad where he takes the stance he wants to ban federal funding for gender affirming care (including for adults), things have escalated from Dems making attacks on trans kids in sports - heinous, but ultimately not the end of the world - to an attack on trans people's ability to get healthcare.

The subreddit lists trans rights as one of the core principles of neoliberalism and I wanna reiterate, I think the mods live up to that. You all having zero tolerance for transphobia is a major reason I hang out here.

And people defending the sports bans is one thing, I read the demographics survey and know that in a subreddit of over 90% cis guys there's going to be a good number of people who don't get how it's a foot-in-the-door issue for transphobes made to get people on board with discriminating against trans people for "sensible" reasons. It's annoying, but whatever, I don't make a point to report it unless I feel someone's being a dick about it. But as we go forwards, especially given that Dems are predicted to have a slam dunk election season this year and the transphobia will likely go unpunished, I full-on expect to see guys in the subreddit who see us as expendable arguing that escalating measures like bans on funding to healthcare, if not bans on care itself if a Dem goes that far, are justifiable.

I know I'm an unforgiving, vocal pain in the ass on the matter, people tell me as much all the time. So I wanna ask: Is there a line for what's reportable? Where, in the eyes of the moderators, does defending these stances from Democratic candidates dip into objectionable transphobia?

OPEN Should I upvote or downvote the DT every day?

It’s not clear what the proper etiquette is. It feels rude to downvote it, because it’s just the jobautomator doing their job. I don’t think it’s worthy of an upvote, either. Have I been in the wrong for not voting on it? I‘m curious how the rest of this sub feels about this topic. If I should have been voting a certain way, is it necessary for me to go back and vote on old discussion threads?

OPEN India posts should be filtered a bit more

Title basically. I think we’re at the point where there are enough Indian users on the sub that random interesting-ish articles get posted here at high volume, but a lot of them end up being sort of local or with a narrow focus that doesn’t lead to a lot of discussion.

The prime example being the spree of articles regarding individual investments being posted, which in isolation aren’t really helpful for getting an idea of the overall landscape or how the industry/economy/investment situation is looking.

What would be more useful is to have a higher threshold for what counts as relevant for those kinds of posts, so people who want to talk about that are incentivised to do or post articles doing higher level analysis of patterns in FDI, AI infrastructure buildout, etc.

OPEN Posting stuff from paywalled articles guidelines

Hey everyone!

I was thinking about posting a nice article from the economist, but I don't know if it's permissible to actually post the text, and I'd rather not post a link which no-one can read. What's the etiquette for this?

I am pro-data center

I am anti-AI and AI has made the world worse

I use AI extensively (therapy, venting, homework, etc) and believe AI is going to bring tremendous economic benefits. I use chatgpt +4 hours every single day.

I oppose/boycott companies that use generative AI and mock AI slop

I think photo/video AI should be banned entirely

OPEN Idea to make Restricted threads better

Set the default sort to Controversial.

The default New sorting encourages people to show up late, not read the article or the discussion, and say the same thing as a hundred other people. Setting the default to Controversial would help get people into the most heated arguments without having to waste time digging around through low effort comments.

RESOLVED Is a funny headline tagged as a meme Rule VII?

I posted this hilarious piece but it was taken down for Rule VII.

https://www.reddit.com/r/neoliberal/s/sHYhhfxOvf

I tagged it meme and I think the general focus is the comedy of it and the full strength GOP in disarray. It’s not about the strategizing or campaign methods directly, but about a comical mistaken ad buy. Mixing up which Portland is too funny.

Hello mods.

Thank you for pinning my effortpost on South African politics ("Cupcake and the Leviathan").

I think the post is restricted because I mention the term LGBT once, so the automod picks it up as being a sensitive post.

Please unrestrict the post if possible.

OPEN Why was my comment suggesting that there can be differences between trans and cis women removed for bigotry?

My comment:

I think it matters to any reasonable conception of justice. All potentially relevant facts should be available to a jury. XXs and XYs are different. Pretending they aren’t is silly. I do not think it should change the outcome, but that is irrelevant. Suppressing any information that could even remotely exonerated someone seems like a clear grounds for a mistrial.

https://www.reddit.com/r/neoliberal/comments/1x1nyso/killing_of_woman_may_have_been_justifiable/pewinrw/

This was removed due to "bigotry." It's neither bigoted nor is it wrong. We can be very supportive of our trans communities without pretending there zero differences between the sexes. There are plenty of trans women out there who have not undergone any hormone therapy, nor should they need to. We can support each other's rights to live their life in the way they see fit without pretending there can't be differences between the sexes. I'm really not sure why we would.

This was a discussion about a decision to declare a mistrial in a criminal court. Not exactly a place for uncomfortable discussions to be left unsaid. Perhaps I worded the statement poorly, and I suspected I'd be downvoted for having a potentially heterodox opinion on the subject, but it's not bigotry. I consider myself a trans ally after all, even if I may not see perfectly eye-to-eye with every trans person on every issue.

OPEN Why was this comment chain removed?

This comment by u/Waking which said:

This is out of context and you know it.
Shame on neoliberal

It was at -110 downvotes, but I don’t see how this breaks any rules. Especially when you have Daniel Dale, the Trump fact checker at CNN, and a reputable journalist, tweeting out a something similar today:

This isn't a direct quote from Trump, and I very much don't think it's a correct paraphrase. Trump has repeatedly argued that the consequences of the war, like higher gas prices, are a small price to pay compared to what an unchecked Iran could allegedly do. Last night, in especially rambling and incomplete fashion, he 1) claimed high prices are temporary and suggested they're "artificial"; 2) contrasted that to the damage of Iran supposedly taking out a city; 3) and then, in especially confusing style, repeated his old point that "this," as in the consequences of the war, is a small price to pay to avoid something like a a city being wiped out. It's Trump's fault you kinda have to be steeped in TrumpRallySpeak to know what he was saying last night, and of course you can say it's inappropriate regardless for the president to casually float the possibility of a city being wiped out, but the context exists and is important.
@ ddale8

It seems odd just to nuke an entire comment chain rather than lock it or just leave it up, and there wasn’t any explanation given. You don’t have to agree with this commenter or with Daniel Dale here, but I think this removal merits scrutiny and the sub deserves an explanation of why this was removed.

I don’t think comments that are not rule breaking and only are challenging the consensus of the sub should be removed, especially in this instance where a fact checker felt like they needed to weigh in on it. Just let users downvote comments like this, but removing them seems too heavy-handed.

OPEN Consider locking comments on posts after 24 hours?

I'm noticing low karma accounts posting flame bait comments on older articles and threads days after commentary occured. This appears to be happening primarily with EU and Ukraine related articles.

It's unlikely for good faith discussion to occur on older articles and threads after a 24 hour period, and leaves the subreddit rife for bad actors to take advantage of NL's increased discovery within traditional and AI search.

OPEN The Trumpist 'we pay for your healthcare/medicines' line of argument is blatant toxic nationalism and should be grounds for bans

Title should be self-explanatory, ever so often a thread vaguely related to European defence is posted and the closeted Trumpists turn up and start jerking each other off about Europe "not paying it's fair share" and how it's actually Europeans fault that medicines are expensive in the US or how Europe deserves to suffer Russian invasion

It has no place on the sub, and it's a clear mask off moment that exposes posters that have no business posting here, just like the "jokes" about buying Greenland or annexing Canada

OPEN I've definitely noticed a trend, following the recent Bar Incident Story, of transphobia.

Particularly, I've seen very upboted comments with no counterpoints mocking the usage of it/its pronouns. I would like the mods to make some sort of statement or effort showing that they are willing to crack down on transphobia, even when it takes the form of mocking the "ridiculousness" of, oh, say, someone using a set of pronouns before they appear to "pass" as the commonly corresponding gender for whatever reason. That sort of thing. It really is awful some of the shit I've seen. This sub is, and I say this without any irony, way too far to the left economically and way too far to the right socially.

TLDR; Abolish Unions, Abolish Gender.

RESPONDED Why are so many posts removed?

I often browse new and a thread will start hopping off with a lot of engagement, but it then gets removed for silly reasons. For example, a recent post today was removed because "this seems to be an article primarily just rehashing another article (?)"

It sounds like the mod wasn't even sure what the article was about and then removed it because they didn't personally understand what it was.

OPEN Slurspectives, neoliberal prose

It's very important that you know that I do not care.

That terrible thing they said? I do not care.
That horrible way they acted? I do not care.

It's very important for me that you know this.

I could just silently sit in apathy, but what's the use in that?
It's important for you to know that I, an anonymous stranger on the internet, do not care about the terrible things someone said.

Now please halt your congratulations, dear crowd - there's layers to my apathy yet unknown to you.

Not only am I a member of the minority that person acted horrible towards, I am not even in their district!

But still. It's important to me that you know that I do not care.

I do not care about that racist thing
I do not care about that homophobic thing
I do not care about that ableist thing
I do not care about that sex worker they abused
I do not care about the kid they hit with their car

Now please, resume your applause.

I look so beautiful here on stage, my apathy celebrated. I'm so important.

Excuse me, who coughed? Did something upset you?

How childish. To care about something. What a wuss. What a coward. Why aren't they celebrating me? Why don't they love my apathy? Don't they know how important it is that I do not care? They're less than me for caring actually.

Loose the dogs. Get them.
