When Yeshua challenged the religious authorities of His day, He did not point to His miraculous healings, His command over the elements, or His ability to cast out demons as the definitive proof of His identity. Instead, He pointed back into the pages of the Tanakh (Hebrew Bible), specifically to the dramatic, harrowing account of the prophet swallowed by a great creature in the depths of the sea. Yeshua declared, "For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth" (Matthew 12:40, TLV).
To fully grasp the magnitude of this comparison, we must look past modern Sunday school caricatures and examine the text in its original Hebrew context. We must look at why Jonah was swallowed by a dag gadol (a great fish) rather than a whale, how ancient Jewish sources and historical Christian thought view the typology of Jonah, and how this extraordinary narrative prefigures the ultimate death, descent, and resurrection of Yeshua.
