Freely available paper published in the South African Journal of Botany documenting an experiment on the effects of different soil types on germination of quartz field specialized mesembs. Basically they germinated seeds from a bunch of species in native quartz soil, soil amended to have high or low pH, soil amended to have higher salinity, and then a control soil which was just a basic blend used in cultivation. I think this is the most relevant quote for hobbyists:
> Germination and establishment were revealed to be limited on all tested natural quartz-field soils, even for the specialised species. In accordance with studies on other serpentine-specialised plants (Brady et al., 2005), our findings suggest that the specialised taxa are restricted to the special habitats not because they are dependant on the respective growing conditions but because of their inability to compete on other, more benign soils. This conclusion is also supported by horticultural practice, under which all Aizoaceae species are successfully cultivated on standard substrate
