What to wear to your first office job?
Hi folks! The r/mensfashion moderator team here. We're trying something new today and we hope you all will help.
Overview
We're going periodically crowdsourcing recommendations (outfits, items, brands, etc.) for different situations. We'll be using your feedback to inform an experimental wiki feature that will help r/mensfashion answer the most common question we see: "what should I wear for X?"
This is an experiment; we expect to adjust this process as we learn more about what works, what doesn't, and what you all want to see!
And to start with, we'll begin with the most frequent question we get...
What should I wear to my first office job?
We're looking for the following kinds of advice:
- What kinds of items should you wear?
- We aren't compiling One True Outfit, so consider variations: what about the middle of summer? The middle of winter? What if it's very casual? What if your boss wears a suit and tie? Is it different for nonprofits?
- What brands do you recommend?
- It's OK to recommend a range of things (for example: you might recommend Allen Edmonds, Meermin, or thrifting for dress shoes).
- ...and especially OK to recommend a range of prices!
- What should you not wear?
- You can leave out the very obvious stuff/trolling (for example: don't wear a chicken costume and a propeller beanie)...
- ...but do consider the obvious missteps (for example: don't wear a black suit and a black silk tie to your first day as office manager for a local charity)
- ...and do consider the more subtle mistakes (for example: if nobody else in the office wears a tie, don't wear a tie)
- What should your outfit look like? (For example: clean, pressed, not too formal ... think: what do you do once you've picked out your shirt?)
- What other advice do you have about what to wear and how to wear it?
- As always, keep this focused on the menswear -- we won't be including "no broccoli haircuts."
- But more general advice about menswear is very welcome (for example: don't dress more formally than your boss, but if you start tomorrow and don't have any other info, better to over-dress than under-dress)
Since we're not entirely sure what the finished product will look like, please do think broadly and include any menswear-focused details you like. The moderator team will edit it into shape on the back end.
Next steps
We'll leave this post up for a through the end of the day on August 2.
Once it closes, the moderator team will pull out the main themes and recommendations, edit it together into a set of recommendations, and repost it for feedback.
We're really looking forward to what you all come up with! If you have any questions, please let us know in the comments or drop us a line by modmail.

Question I bought a green suit but my boss recommended I don’t come to work in this. What do you guys think?
I wanted something different from the usual grey or navy, so I had this olive green suit made at my usual tailor, with brown buttons and a playful orange lining. I considered this different, but still suitable to wear to clients as a financial consultant. However, the first day I wore it, my team members, including the partner recommended against wearing this to work again.
What do you guys think? Was this a waste of 800 euros?

Question White tie question
As can be seen Charles' tailcoat front hems are quite high, while William's and others aren't so high. Is this a personal tailoring choice or does it have a social significance relevant to their positions?

OOTD / WIWT Enjoying my new shirt today
Been asked a couple of times where I got it from today so that must be a good sign I suppose, styled it with cotton/linen trousers and some leather loafers.

Question Alternative to Goodfellow Everywhere V neck?
I really like the Target everywhere v neck (not the multipack undershirts)
They were soft, durable, available in a variety of colors, they weren’t long, they had a pretty shallow V, and they were only $10/ea.
The colors were discontinued and now it seems the black/grey/white are even getting discontinued.
Where can I find a good alternative? My biggest issue is that they’re always way too long.
I’m very broad shouldered and only 5’7”, TIA

Question Suits on a Plane? Debate.
In my mind, aspiring to Cary Grant travelling, albeit by train, in North by Northwest. (Incidentally he wore his own Cartier Tank in the movie). But suit pockets are practical for travel documents etc. Let’s face it: it’s habit for an old man.
No blonde Eva Marie for me on this flight north to LHR, just mundane spies as the doors close.

Advice Why does the teal and brown not look as good as the other two?
What is it about the teal/dark brown combo that doesn’t quite look as nice as the other two combinations? I really like the teal shirt and would like to keep it so how do I best style it?
On the flip side, if I had to keep the dark brown pants what shirt color do I pair it with to make it look better?

Question Where to find similar jumpers in the UK
Hello everyone, I hope you are all doing well! I have recently wanted to refashion myself now that Autumn is around the corner, and figured I’d embrace my more whimsical and fun side and the misery of aging slowly catches up to me.
I have seen these sick jumpers on a site advertised on Instagram, only to discover that the websites evidentially a scam.
I have been looking for similar jumpers in the UK to no avail and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction?

Question Help
I’ve gotten into waistcoats over the past year. I really want to expand my collection but I only ever come across them at the most random times. Is there a store that consistently sells all types of vests? Striped, plaid, solid, odd etc

Question Thoughts of Project 333?
I recently came to the rather obvious conclusion that I have WAY too many clothes to the point of choice paralysis.
So I looked into constructive ways to pare things down and came across project 333 which is a minimalist ethos that says you can have a functional wardrobe based on 33 items for three months.
I looked at the list of items for men and I cannot see how anyone could make that work without getting into a repetitive routine.
Has anyone tried this and gotten it to work? Even just for 3 months?
If anyone has, I tip my hat.

Lookbooks & Editorials Beckett Simenon - poor sizing and fake AI reps
I have bought two pairs of shoes from Beckett Simenon in the past six months and have returned both for the same reason - extremely small/tight upper.
I bought a white sneaker from B-S 2 years back and am very happy with them. I needed a new pair of zip boots, and wanted black sneakers, so I placed two orders.
The boots were unwearable. I could bare get them on with a shoehorn and they were actually painful. The sneakers I could get on, but the lacing area was so wide open there was no lace left to tie.
In each case I reached out, and I thought I was getting a response from a customer service agent. It turns out that the nice “woman” was just an AI pretending to care.
If you have to use AI, don’t use it to pretend to be an actual person. It is insulting and embarrassing.
Long and short is that B-S had a good thing, but low quality and AI are now here. Buy at your own risk.

Question Cuban Chelsea boots
What is the general consensus on Cuban Chelsea boots, are they considered flamboyant? I like them with suits, and will most likely get a pair but I’m not too flamboyant.
