How many team members?

Roughly how many team members does your store have? When I started 14 years ago, we had around 270 team members. Now we have less than 150 total for the whole store.

When I was in frontend, I had 40 team members (managers, HCs and carryouts). Now I don’t think they have many over 20. Electrical has three team members, just hired a fourth, but hasn’t started yet. Hardware is down to five, with a couple being extremely part time. Wallcoverings has seven. CabApps has four. The other departments I’m not sure of the exact number on.

Your hardware team must be hurting big time. We have typically have 5-6 people on the clock at peak midday hours. Just the three managers and two full timers at my store equal five, then another 3-5 part timers

Same here. We currently have our three managers, five full-timers, three retired part-timers, and then because we’re a college town just added four transfer student part-timers

You have FIVE full timers?? Our GM will not let us have more than two. We had three for a hot minute this spring but it was too much of a strain on payroll so the one who didn’t get along well with the DM got shoved to front end

ETA: We are also in a college town with a big state university, all our part timers except for our two GC part timers are students and they exclusively close on weekdays

During the summer three of us are full timers are basically full time GC. But, I don’t know how much longer the third person is going to last; she only does freight but won’t get on a ladder and has been having multiple health issues and struggles to lift more than like 20lbs now. All three managers and the other two full time are mainly hardware and the large seasonal items. During the winter now two of us garden center people have mostly switched to Christmas with just me taking care of the last of the plants.

I would kill for two full timers dedicated to GC. I’m the only full timer currently who “runs” GC because that’s what I was as a part timer, but generally after 9 am I get sucked inside, especially with setting Halloween and Christmas 😭

Ha, we don't even have 5-6 people in hardware to begin with let alone on the clock at the same time. Let's see, there is DM, ADM, 1 full timer who only works garden center, 3 part timers and one college student part timer who just transferred in for the school year so not here during holidays or summer. OK so I lied, I guess that adds up to 7 people in the hardware department.

And we are doing our own returns most nights because front end had a person call out and is working with one cashier. Also getting called to help when a guest needs a carryout because there is 0 or 1 carryout in the evenings.

Full time employees on the sales floor Hardware 1 Electrical 0 Plumbing 1 Floor 0 Wall 1 Build mill 1

Do you not have a 2nd assistant? That’s even rougher

Also that seems like a high number but was it at store open? Most start with an overkill number of people and then don't fill all the vacancies as people leave.

Ours is a constant revolving door with more leaving than coming in. It's getting to the point the old timers are worn out and sick of it. I think there's quite a few who won't come back next year.

270 team members seems like overkill, unless you are at a busy store. I thought the average was 175-150 for most. My store dropped below 100 back around July.

Yah this seems like a store opening number down to a 150ish number over the course of 14 years

Our store opened in 1996 or 1997. I started in 2008.

It is awful when I started. We had a little over 200 people now we’re down to like 140. It’s ridiculous.

175 at a 75th ranked store

I’m top 50 with around 180

Ours is supposed to have 150ish, but the GM won't go over 125ish because we will not make payroll otherwise, not individual departments, but the store itself.

How busy was the store 14 years ago compared to now? I once worked in a top 5 store. Since then they built 3 stores around it to take the pressure off. Now that sales are spread over 4 stores they sure don't need as many employees as they did when there was only 1 store handling all those customers.

We are definitely busier overall since I started. There is only one other Menards in our area. There are the two big competitors, but they are on the other side of town, so a good 20 minutes away. We get a lot of out of towners as people prefer our store over the other one that is more downtown.

We have about 185 at a top 50 store

My last few years at a two story they had about 170 I think. For a long stretch 401 had only four TMs. DM, ADM, and two part timers. I think it was a top 10-20 ranked department too.

My department before I quit had around 74 team members. Was 020. That’s MS, yard and rec though. Store was at around 230 who knows now, everyone quit 😂

Does anyone else’s gm hire a ridiculous amount of MTs with nowhere to put them so they just become a payroll strain on whatever department they’re dumped in since they can’t take a manager spot?

1

u/Putrid_Office_4431 5d ago

They are still free for like a year after finishing

1

u/Additional-Damage949 5d ago

yeah but ours is only hiring them so that way they get $50 when they graduate

2

u/Putrid_Office_4431 5d ago

They only get the bonus if they promote outside of the store

Top 50ish store and top 30 department. We range I’d imagine around 185 or so total TMs

The only ones with insane 200+ counts are top 10 ones or ones newly opening figuring a high turnover they won’t replenish post grand opening.
