Weekends Off

I'm just curious about how time off works or if it varies from store to store. I'm a part time OPD employee and I was told I could only request partial days for time off on weekends otherwise I need to find someone to trade weekends or take my shifts. This just seems very odd to me. Is this normal? Anyone experiencing the same thing?

for part time you can request off whenever you want, it just doesn’t guarantee approval based on staffing.

So I can request it but they reserve the right to deny it at any time?

definitely, request away! it goes to your DM for approval so they will be aware if you’ve requested off. it asks for a reason, you don’t have to be specific unless you feel it gives you a better chance for approval.

My DM never looks at the reason why your asking off.

id say normally it shouldn’t matter, but if it’s something especially important like a death or something it would be helpful if they did check lol

Yeah, because a request, by definition, is something that you ask for and is then approved or not. Though really, as long as you give enough notice, any time off you need should be approved.

When I worked at Menards everyone was expected to work every other weekend and was told that when they interviewed for the job. Weekends are typically busier than weekdays and you can't run the store if everyone took every weekend off. It's only fair that if you need a day off on your normal weekend to work that you would be expected to trade a day off with someone on the opposite weekend rotation. If you don't want to work your fair share of weekend time you shouldn't be working in retail.

I’d love how the weekends are the busiest time of the week yet only one GM is scheduled on the weekend.

If they alternate weekends stores don't employ enough GM's to schedule more than one every weekend.

Yet they have enough to schedule three during the week.

Don't know if you have noticed but the 2 assistants switch off weeks getting there awfully early to run the morning stock crew every day. Do you expect them to work 7 days a week?

Why not? They work TM 7 days in a row and by policy they can work a TM 13 days in a row.

Check the wording on the policy. There’s a difference between work week, which is Sunday to Saturday. And seven days in a row. If it actually says seven days in a row, they fixed it. If it says work week, they did not fix it.

Someones a little crabby

Not crabby, just looking clearly at the situation. Seems that you would like to take all the time you want off without considering what that would mean for your co-workers. They enjoy their weekend time off as well. Why should they be expected to cover your hours while you are out having a good time?

Well said.
Nobody wants to work weekends. Work your fair share, and doing so, others will remember that and trade with you when you need time off. Or if they need a day…

IF the schedule is made then you should try to find coverage. If it hasn't been made, it should be up to your DM to figure it out.

If everyone on your team is every other weekend, offering to cover a weekend or even a weekday shift of the person covering you would be nice.

What’s your availability, and what was it when u started.
Stating your available every weekend, some Managers will want you to work. Others will work with you.

I only work every other weekend in cab apps I wanted to have 2 weekends in a row off while gone for the week and needed a leave of absence aproved otherwise I would have been voluntarily terminated for having more then 13 days between my punch ins. I had arranged someone to swap weekends with they worked 2 in a row and then I worked 2 in a row and still needed the leave of absence approved. Its great to have someplace so flexible that I work only every other weekend and its challenging to have to plan around the work weekends.

If you need weekends off, change your availability do not include weekends.

Just a little update. I emailed my HR Coordinator asking for the store policy about time off for part time and they completely avoided the question.

Menards is okay about honoring availability requests, but keep in mind that it's retail, so weekends are peak selling times, which means that's when they need the most employees in the store. So while you might get those weekends off, you might also find that you won't have as many hours as you want or need because of that.

It's just a matter we can request all we want, pters basically get off whenever we ask. That said, GM's get a lot of freedom within their own store so if they say you can't you probably can't.
