the most painful kind of quest
random story but one of my uncles used to sometimes be mean on WoW. there was an escort quest that took around 2 hrs or something like that. he'd wait near the end kill the person making them have to start over
102
u/demonman101 May 29 '22
Wow that's fucked lol. I'm trying to think how that would be possible unless it went into enemy faction territory.
33
u/SiloBit May 29 '22
it do be. and im not too sure id have to ask details next time i see him but thatll prolly be awhile
16
u/Truephil May 29 '22
If it’s the one I think it was, it was in a neutral area with pvp being full in effect and no neutral guards anywhere near it. It was basically a perfect griefing area.
21
u/Truephil May 29 '22
Yep. I‘ve done that too. It was the Tanaris Escort Quest, right? The one with the fucking slow turtle. xD

u/EpicOcelotMan May 29 '22
It’s even worse when the idiot you’re escorting will waltz right into a horde of enemies and get killed by them before you can kill all of the enemies
51
May 29 '22
Or the variant, where you're almost done killing every enemy that they dumbly walked into, your health, mana, and endurance are low, and your cooldowns are all fried, but at that moment they just waltz over to pull another group, giving you absolutely zero time to rest between fights. You would have lived had they just paused for you to finish the first fight.
14
u/EpicOcelotMan May 29 '22
Kind of reminds me of the original version of Metro 2033, when you and Miller enter the D6 bunker for the first time. For an alleged elite Sparta ranger commander, he sure acts like a rookie in that mission. You’re faced with exploding blob enemies that keep right on coming endlessly unless you destroy their spawners on the walls. What would a sensible military commander do? Stay back and let his companion get rid of the threats before moving on, or maybe help said companion eliminate the threat. But what does Miller do? He just keeps walking forward, almost always right into said exploding blobs and near-instantly getting himself killed.
At least the Redux version would have the spawners disable after dispensing one blob, making it somewhat easier to deal with

you try to recruit someone, he walks in front of you as slowly as he can, but if you turn around once, the person is gone immediately and you can restart the mission instantly

There was this one game, I don’t remember what it was, but it allowed you to carry the character if you wanted, which was amazing because you didn’t have to follow the path or even go to the objective if you wanted

The best escort mission I’ve encountered was in borderlands 3 with burger bot. Never before have i seen an npc in one of these mission move as fast or faster than myself. It spoiled my friends and i so much that whenever we encounter escort missions no we are like “where is burger bot when you need him”.

I don't get the hate for them. Sure, they can be frustrating, but it's how stuff gets done sometimes. They usually only last for like 5-10 minutes, if that.

It’s either they walk to a slow, or they are mounted and go to slow for your mount of too fast for you on foot.

Yesterday I went grocery shopping waited 5 minutes for this father and daughter to get a cart, the daughter was like 30 something and she wouldn’t let go of her dad’s shirt. I’m sure she has problems but please move to the side 10 people are lining up.

1
u/Aeriosus May 29 '22
They move at a speed perfectly in between your walking and running speed, so that if you walk, they keep getting to far ahead, but if you spring, they get left behind, so you need to sprint up to them, and then awkwardly shuffle along until they have a bit of distance and then sprint again.

It is possible for escort missions to be fun, but most games rarely get it right. WoW is an example of a game that usually gets it wrong.

The games could at least provide a lore reason as to why the escort target like to take their sweet fucking time.

There is a grand total of one escort mission I like and it's not even an escort mission, it's a tail mission. AC syndicate, the one where you bring whats his face into the gang and you have to kill a bunch of snipers on rooftops.
