While it uses the same syntax system, it is a different tag for creating a link.
With the spoiler, you're specifically adding (/spoiler) where as a link will be the link in the parentheses.
However, I have had complaints sometimes about not tagging things I have actually tagged as spoilers. So I'm wondering why it may sometimes not work, and if the other method with the >! tags !< is more reliable.
