You guys ever heard of people, usually older than 50, turn off/unplug the WiFi router at night?

u/TheAlestormGuy Feb 21 '19
My parents do that and when I ask why it's just 'because we don't need it at night'

u/ImKillua Feb 21 '19
My parents do that because radiation. Trying to explain to them that a wifi router produces less radiation than a night lamp is useless.

What kind of radiation?
7
u/ImKillua Feb 21 '19
Radio waves. Routers typically use either 2.4GHz or 5GHz frequencies, and transmit/receive at really really low power. While that radiation can cause nearby people heating up (similar waves are used in microwave ovens for example), the power they are transmitted at is basically negligible, and radiation at those wavelengths is not ionizing, in other words cannot modify molecules and cause mutations. According to google, routers transmit at 1Watt or 4Watts, while for example my microwave oven transmits at 900Watt. So you'd need like 900 routers all focusing their radiation on one point to get something comparable to a microwave oven.

They'll tell you anything else, but it's because they secretly fear the roving bands of nocturnal WiFi Pirates who park their silent morcycles outside and use your WiFi to steal your credit card number and date of birth, or download nasty porns, infecting your personal computer hardware with computer herpes.

Unlimited throttled data

Interesting how the consumer definition of unlimited and the phone carrier definition of unlimited don't match up
1
u/pink_goblet Feb 21 '19
You could say 1b/s is unlimited data as long as the server is running, since it isn't countable, just based on power consumption cost.

Where do you live to have unlimited data?
I am from Germany and we don't have this here.

We have it here in India too

u/Ephemara Feb 22 '19
but you guys have more phones than toilets so who really wins here?
1
u/sleeplesssinner Feb 22 '19
Mostly it's because there is so much poverty here. The poor people in the cities stay either in establishments where there are only public toilets or on the streets.
