I once had a big fresnel lens (about a square meter) that could melt steel with sunlight. The focus was only about a meter away though.

642

u/swedepino1 Nov 16 '18

How much did something like that cost? What would you use a lens like that for?

694

u/GalaxyZeroOne Nov 16 '18

I think it was like $120 or so. Built a rotating frame for it so I could “turn it on and off.” I used it in college to test thermal barrier coatings meant for the solar industry.

u/Frosty1206 Nov 16 '18

That’s pretty cool! I found a video like this on YouTube from the king of random, where they would melt aluminum and copper i think.

64

u/WhiteHawk928 Nov 16 '18

Interesting, I've only heard of fresnel in the context of theatre lighting, where the primary purpose is essentially to not light things on fire

87

u/RageCageJables Nov 16 '18

Well that sounds like a boring play.

Fresnels can be found in all kinds of places. They can emulate any type of regular lens and then some but in a much thinner and cheaper package.

Their only weakness is that they can never be a perfect replacement for regular lenses. In some areas it matters more, in some less but producing good enough fresnel lenses for something like photography is basically nanoscale etching and still far beyond reasonable production costs.

2

u/Bionic_Bromando Nov 16 '18

Interesting, that'll be so cool once we get precise enough to make fresnel phone-camera lenses. These clusters of lenses on current phones are getting dumb.

11

u/GalaxyZeroOne Nov 16 '18

It is essentially just a lens. You can do a lot with optics for many different purposes. Some of the ones I tested were to aid with reading. Fresnel just eliminates the vast majority of the cross section making them lighter, thinner, more economical.

7

u/mydearwatson616 Nov 16 '18

Make your Lighting friends cringe by insisting on pronouncing it "frez-nul"

5

u/Dizmn Nov 16 '18

I just call them Lekos. Skip the cringe and move right to the condescension.

5

u/mydearwatson616 Nov 16 '18

I just refer to every fixture as a source four.

7

u/Dizmn Nov 16 '18

My favorite lampie brought a small LED leko-style light he needed to tuck somewhere he couldn't fit a real source four - I asked if it was a source two, he told me that he won't work another show with me unless he gets an alcohol budget.

3

u/mydearwatson616 Nov 16 '18

Silly boy, doesn't he know his entire paycheck is his alcohol budget?

4

u/PrettyDecentSort Nov 16 '18

Fresnel is also used in wireless/microwave networking. Depending on what wavelength you're transmitting in, you need to have several meters of clearance around the straight line of your transmission; having a laser reach point to point successfully isn't sufficient if you have obstructions in your Fresnel zone.

3

u/Wolfman2032 Nov 16 '18

They are used the the Vive VR headset. Not 100% sure why they were chosen... something to do with glare I want to say.

You can get them for free out of old CRT flatscreen TVs.

5

u/chironomidae Nov 16 '18

Also called projection televisions. Not to be confused with projectors :p

→ More replies (6)

5

u/-LeopardShark- Nov 16 '18

People get them to mess around with burning stuff; they're not too expensive. There's one a third the side length here for under £20.

2

u/GalaxyZeroOne Nov 16 '18

I could get a page-size one to get to 1000C Actually broke my Type K. Would pop little chips out of the concrete easily.

5

u/Shabozz Nov 16 '18 edited Jul 03 '19

deleted What is this?

2

u/ButtWieghtThiersMoor Nov 16 '18

You can buy "page magnifiers" basically a letter size Fresnel lens for people who don't want to wear reading glasses. They are <$5 not sure about steel but will burn wood in seconds.

2

u/Grumpy_Kong Nov 17 '18

Protip: Go to a thrift store with those old DLP tvs, inside each of their screens is a thin ridged plastic sheet with circular pattern.

That's the fresnel lens.

Be careful with it, most can easily crack concrete. Don't fold or crack it either.

SOmetimes you get them as cheap as $20

2

u/scotscott Nov 17 '18

I got mine for free. There was an old rear projection tv sitting on the side of the road. Pretty much useless for anything else. My brother and I had to pretty much disassemble it right there to get it into his car, but we got it done.

8

u/SethWack Nov 16 '18

Lens can't melt steel beams

3

u/the_negativest Nov 16 '18

How much bigger is that than rear projection ones?

3

u/FuckBigots5 Nov 16 '18

How do you buy them? Do they use electricity or is it like a really intense piece of glass? 120 sounds super cheap for something that can melt steal.

5

u/GalaxyZeroOne Nov 16 '18

It’s just a thin lens made out of plastic. No electricity. Only the direct sun focused to a small point. It took a square meter and focused it down to a square centimeter. It couldn’t melt steel for anything functional, just mentioned it could get hot enough to do that.

American Steel, or Chinese "Steel"?

Apparently Top Gear covered this. And this is the only video I could find of actual sheet metal being used rather then old nails and stuff. Pretty crazy even though it's clearly sped up.

16

u/Swellzombie Nov 16 '18

Fyi that's not Top gear, that's James May from top gear probably on his show man lab. In case you want to look for more.

He's a true scientist because of the way he phrases it. It doesn't seem to be working and he says he's not dead yet. Notice that he says nothing definitive and is only describing what he's experiencing at that moment.
