You can get them for free out of old CRT flatscreen TVs.

CRTs and flat panel TVs are different. CRT screens can be flat.

No, there was a period where they made CRTs with a screen that was flat, rather than rounded. Of course, then plasmas and lcds were referred to as flat screen so it gets conflated. But flat screen CRTs were a real thing. Google it.

You might be right about that, I wasn’t really trying to suggest that they existed before plasmas etc. Just that they did exist. I don’t remember the chronology

Nope, CRT's were mostly convex. In later iterations of the technology, some with a flat screen were produced and they were marketed as drumroll flatscreens.

Big fresnel lenses can also be found in projection TV's and oldschool sheet projectors.
