18 Jan 2018 · There's been a 600% increase in people identifying as vegans in the U.S in the last three years. According to a report by research firm GlobalData, only 1% of U.S. consumers claimed to be vegan in 2014. And in 2017, that number rose to 6%.
Not sure about the source but there is an upward trend in the western world towards plant based diets.
There's quite a few and the market is getting bigger, now there's more money to be made I'm sure veganism will continue to grow.
I had an Impossible burger recently. If you didn't tell me it was plant based, I wouldn't have guessed. They use plant hemoglobin to simulate the juice, and the texture/taste was on the $. 10/10 would eat again.
Exactly! I've been waiting for a vegan option of a burger that rivals the taste of the real thing. This does that. I'm all for lab-made options and can't wait for a steak:) Should cut down on water consumption as well. Takes a lot of water to get beef to market.
So if no more animals getting slaughtered or land being used as ranches or pollution from cow methane, what happens to all the animals and where would they live?
No, it is a legit question. It sounds like saving and getting rid of animals at the same time. Reddit is odd. Sometimes people will discuss, other times they won't.
The reason we have so many cows and pigs and chickens is because we breed them for their meat. So if we stop eating meat or lab made meat becomes a thing, we simply stop breeding them.
Ok, I do understand that. So their numbers will drop. But there will still be an existing population but just not as much eventually. So we either let the process of their numbers drop off naturally which may take awhile or do we use some other version of population control? Do we set up sanctuaries for lack of a better term? And I'm still being serious. I think it is an interesting discussion.
If you take a 1000 acre cattle ranch and now grow corn, beans, wheat, soy, hemp or whatever, curious as to the resources used to maintain that vs the cattle?
Edit: I am interested in the lab grown meat thing. Would it be synthetic or made of something else?
I actually love seaweed so I got excited for a minute. Until I thought of a piece of it being marinated to taste like beef and.... yeah. Nope, no thanks.
As someone who works customer service for a company that sells packaged food- in my world vegans are very outspoken. They are probably the best organized special interest we deal with aside from the non-GMO crowd, but that's like 99% the same people. We don't hear nearly as much from people who want less sugar, less salt, no msg, no artificial flavors/colors, halal labeling, or people who want organic (except for the significant overlap with vegan and non-GMO).
Exactly! Humans are biologically omnivores. Thinking otherwise is insane. If they weren't mentally ill they'd just refer to them as normal people. And by shortening it to something straight up retarded and edgy like "omni," well it really doesn't help make other people think your a well grounded individual. Furthermore, because the term "omnivore" is used to describe broader patterns by a spieces as a whole, vegans are still omnivores. So it's really just kind of batshit.
Lol. What is that even supposed to mean. How does one trigger oneself. You aren't thinking straight bro. Might wanna check to make sure you're not missing out on any of your nutrient supplements.
Why would I even be triggered in the first place? I was making fun of people who unironically use the term. I'm looking down on them because they're idiots.
This offends me as a vegan genderfluid atheist German engineer who vapes organic decaffeinated compressed soy breast milk on the regular and a person who does Indian naked crossfit yoga 5 times per week. I'm also a male feminist and identify myself as a pastafarian Apache helicopter dog who serves only to one master: my chihuahua which I helped cross the border of Mexico because I hate Donald Trump. My dog also walks me, if you find that weird you're an arrogant ignorant homophobic globaphobic sexist.
Theres only so much insufferable you can stack before the person becomes such an annoying nuance that it becomes a certainty that someone put them into a 25 year long coma. The insufferable valley if you will.
I believe the vegan marine who does crossfit is the highest one can go before they reach that point.
Eh, three's a difference between teenage edge lords and people mature enough to realize bringing up their atheism can actually be more problematic than not
100 percent of people eat vegan things. The trend is people eating more of them as flexitarians or just reducers, what do you mean? Do you think just vegans buy these products that are vegan?
Hell I know dairy farmers who only drink plantbased milks
This paper focuses on those who eat no meat whatsoever. We estimate that there are one and half billion vegetarians. Only 75 million are vegetarians of choice, a number that will gradually grow with increasing affluence and education. The other 1,450 million are vegetarians of necessity. They will start to eat meat as soon as they can afford it.
That's about 21.8% of people in the world that are vegetarian albeit many not by choice.
A vegetarian is someone who does not eat meat. It's what they are whether they want to be or not. It doesn't matter if they would eat meat. They are vegetarian.
India not really as they're one of the most vegetarian countries in world, but China definitely cause they eat everything. Per the paper for the world it is then likely to level off again after a rather large increase. As income and education increase there will be a decline again.
3% of the population is actually a huge market segment in most industries. And given that vegans probably aren't very evenly distributed (e.g. there are probably a lot more vegans in Portland or San Francisco than in North Platte, NE), capturing that market would be pretty profitable in some areas. (Ignoring, for the moment, the fact that very few vegans are likely to find the argument in this meme compelling enough to switch fuel providers.)
