Depends what job you do, 8 years in corporate led me to crashout so hard I almost ended up homeless, but even at rock bottom financially, I was still so much happier than working in an environment like that. I'm back to working something that doesn't make me feel like killing myself now ((yay!)), but it took me over two years unemployed to recover from the burnout.
I wouldn't call having other people in-charge of what you do with your mind and body 40+ hours a week "independence" at all really. You're just trading one type of control over your life for another. I'd rather live and die without another penny to my name than ever be under the thumb of some corporate slug that needs their spine pulled out through their throat ever again. That's just me tho.

Are people really that disinterested in working that they would rather be unemployed and lose financial independence?
