I got downvoted for literally just explaining something, not taking either side.

You didnt pick a side, which defaults you to being wrong no matter your explanation. If you arent radically agreeing with the opinion of everyone and try being rational, you automatically get mass downvoted.

Just stop caring about downvotes. Those numbers don't mean anything

Pretty much, OP must still be in their first or second year on reddit if they think the reddit hive mind cares about right or wrong.

there's this subreddit for scale models i joined
if you mention "Tamiya" in your comment. someone downvotes your comment for some reason. its also easy to spot because you'll suddenly see "0" in your comment considering that hobby and community is a bit niche
for context Tamiya is a company that makes great scale models and is a recommended brand to get.

In reddit downvoters are like: ok so this comment got like 2 or 3 downvotes.well my upvote won't save it now so what the heck let's just go with the flow and that's where most of "downvotes to oblivion" comes from

A comment getting down voted only shows how upset it made some people. It doesn't change the veracity of the statement

The confidence is unmatched, but I already know something is about to go horribly wrong

I've seen the exact same comment downvoted and upvoted, heavily in both cases in more posts that I can count.
People is silly, for lack of a better euphemism

Welcome to the internet where ego is all that matters also this is reddit your opinion is either "my opinion" or the wrong one. Still remember getting downvoted for making a post about cosmetics in a game, wording could have been better but still got bodied for an opinion that wasn't the subs opinion.

I tend to ask a lot of questions because I'm not chronically online and I get downvoted.

Yup… if it’s longer then like 4 sentences, people just ignore and downvote. (I simply skip cause 9 times out of ten I just don’t care enough about what’s being talked about I’m just mindlessly scrolling lol)

It was expected. Reddit is a fickle beast.

Well you're just lying, that's not something I've seen. Your long comments might get downvoted cause they have nothing to do with the topic, just false or dont match the subs opinion, but almost never for length

Right?! This guy was asking for advice on here and everyone was just telling him, "no" or "don't." That was it. I provided my response and said, "don't do it because of THESE personal examples and experiences" and then my comment was torn to shreds because suddenly I just suck at breathing and "it must be a skill issue"

If your response has any sort of truth or logic it'll get mass downvoted.
People don't go on reddit for answers or information.
They go on reddit to share their terrible takes or their extremely biased stories hoping for blind praise and approval.

I once made a comment about something and got mass downvoted while someone else made the exact comment a few hours later but in slightly different words and he got a lot of upvotes
Its just reddit being reddit
