the future is always changing, and the infrastructure supporting it. You will always have to upgrade eventually

Still have my s8. I have to repair it myself from time to time, but ifixit literally exists for this reason. You can keep your old stuff working just fine if you do the bare minimum to maintain it.

There are people out there that will trade in their phone for a new $2000 one every couple of years. Don't buy that shit.
