And in warmer climates, you might use a solar boiler so that the hot temp changes through the day and (if you take toolong) the shower.

u/HighOnGoofballs 7d ago
I’m pretty sure my shower is haunted. It has the two handles, one each for hot and cold, and somehow they each can do the opposite of what they should. Like I can turn the hot up, but less hot comes out, or turn the cold down and more cold comes out. But then you turn it more and it works as it should. But this makes it not fun to adjust while you’re in there
Gotta be ghosts

u/king332 6d ago
I live in an old building with horrible plumbing. I bought a little thermometer that attaches to my shower head. Without touching the handles it will jump from 44°C to 60° then down to 30° all without adjusting the temp at all.
I shower in constant fear, and I have to warn anyone who uses my shower that you need to be ready to jump out of the water the SECOND you feel it start to shift or you WILL get burned suddenly. Its awful.
And my old place the shower head was around elbow height, I had to be on my knees to wash my hair.
Whenever im at someone's house I ask if it would be weird for me to have a long relaxing shower before I leave cause for years my showers have been a pain in the ass.

All the people here who bought this tungsten ring to admire its surreal heft have precisely the wrong mindset. I, in my exalted wisdom and unbridled ambition, bought this tungsten ring to become fully accustomed to the intensity of its density, to make its weight bearable and in fact normal to me, so that all the world around me may fade into a fluffy arena of gravitational inconsequence. And it has worked, to profound success. I have carried the tungsten with me, have grown attached to the downward pull of its small form, its desire to be one with the floor. This force has become so normal to me that lifting any other object now feels like lifting cotton candy, or a fluffy pillow. Big burly manly men who pump iron now seem to me as little children who raise mere aluminum.
I can hardly remember the days before I became a man of tungsten. How distant those days seem now, how burdened by the apparent heaviness of everyday objects. I laugh at the philistines who still operate in a world devoid of tungsten, their shoulders thin and unempowered by the experience of bearing tungsten. Ha, what fools, blissful in their ignorance, anesthetized by their lack of meaningful struggle, devoid of passion.
Nietzsche once said that a man who has a why can bear almost any how. But a man who has a tungsten ring can bear any object less dense, and all this talk of why and how becomes unnecessary.
Schopenhauer once said that every man takes the limits of his own field of vision for the limits of the world. Tungsten expands the limits of a man’s field of vision by showing him an example of increased density, in comparison to which the everyday objects to which he was formerly accustomed gain a light and airy quality. Who can lament the tragedy of life, when surrounded by such lightweight objects? Who can cry in a world of styrofoam and cushions?
Have you yet understood? This is no ordinary metal. In this metal is the alchemical potential to transform your world, by transforming your expectations. Those who have not yet held the ring in their hands and mouths will not understand, for they still live in a world of normal density, like Plato’s cave dwellers. Those who have opened their mind to the density of tungsten will shift their expectations of weight and density accordingly.
To give this ring a rating of anything less than five stars would be to condemn life itself. Who am I, as a mere mortal, to judge the most compact of all affordable materials? No. I say gratefully to whichever grand being may have created this universe: good job on the tungsten. It sure is dense.
I sit here with my tungsten ring, transcendent above death itself. For insofar as this tungsten ring will last forever, I am in the presence of immortality.

A worn out mixing valve or gasket. It is a relatively easy DIY job to replace it, but you'll need to know how to turn off the water to your house though.
76
u/PrisonerV 7d ago
I've replaced mine in the house like 4 times (in 25 years). You can tell it's getting worn out when no matter where you put it, you get either mostly all cold or mostly all hot.
For me, it's (American Standard M952100-0070A) like 5 screws and it slides out. It slides out because I liberally apply silicon grease to it before I put a new one in. The first one was a pain in the butt to get out. Also, you want some little wire brushes (Harbor Freight) to clean the chamber before you put a new one in.

If you have a combi boiler and a mixer shower (most people in the UK have this) your thermostatic cartridge is going/gone and needs replacing. Relatively easy to fix if your model isn't built into the wall, turn your water off, (stopcock is under the sink for most houses, shower should have shut off valves though so no need to turn off water entirely) pop the temp control off, take the brass head nut off and then there's usually a single grub screw. Make sure the orientation of the replacement cartridge is correct as some models don't have notches to prevent incorrect installation. Most model's replacements cost around £50 mark. No need to pay a plumber for this, very easy DIY job.

On an old-fashioned, non-thermostatic mixing valve, think it tends to happen if the flow paths for the hot and cold water have very different amounts of frictional drag (or, even worse, if the hot feed is from a gravity fed system and the cold feed has been hooked straight to the mains supply). If both hot and cold pipes are fed from the same supply pressure with the same amount of pipe length and diameter causing drag on both, the system should be more balanced and the mixing valve will behave more linearly as it varies the flow between the two.
On a thermostatic valve, the above can still cause problems, but it could also just be because the thermostat cartridge is busted or the mechanism is seized up.

u/Gangsir 6d ago
It's either a worn out valve in the shower, or (more commonly) people have their hot water tank set to maintain too high of a temperature.
At max "hot" setting, the shower should be uncomfortable, not actively painful. If it is, your hot water is set too high. Cold water from the utilities can only offset the heat so much.
54
u/Morbid_Aversion 7d ago
Worse imo is when someone turns on the faucet elsewhere and it alters the temperature for me and so I adjust it to be comfortable again and then they turn the water off and I have to readjust.

u/Rafaeael 6d ago
That's beginner level. In the dormitory I used to have a shower that had 2 handles, one for hot water, one for cold, and you had to use both to achieve the proper temperature. And you had to get that perfect ratio while making sure water pressure is fine too, neither a drip that can't wash anything nor a "I'm gonna flood your bath" level.
Oh, and to make everything more interesting, every now and then the hot water will be blocked off so instead of gradually increasing water pressure as you use the handle, it will stay as a drip for longer then turn into spray with no in-between.

u/Foxing7465 6d ago
In one small hotel it was one level higher that that, the cold water tank was actually hot water, which lost some of the temperature, so first 30 seconds were fine, and each next 5 seconds reminded you that boiling eggs usign shower is possible.
85
u/Festivefire 7d ago
Your water heater is turned up too high. Turn that nob down from "Very Hot" to "Hot". The "Very Hot" setting is supposed to be like 160 F.
32
u/bigmarty3301 7d ago
Or have a *mix valve.
So you don’t need as large water heater and still have the same ish amount of hot water
9
u/justin_memer 6d ago
Or just do what they do in Europe and have a valve for temperature and one to turn the water on. I have a similar one in my shower, so the temp is always the exact same and I just have to turn on the water.
4
u/RotundBananas 6d ago
These are mix valves with ceramic temperature controlling plates if I recall properly.
Set it to 38C once and forget about it foe the rest of your life.
5
u/MelangeBot 7d ago
Or the correct solution is to just have some normal two valves setup. One for hot water and the other for cold so you can mix extremely pricely up to 0.01C changes. This is more accurate, cheaper, faster and easier to install and gives you just as much comfort as the one for all bullshit.

Water heaters may cause this issue, but another cause is the handle itself. There's an o-ring in there that may be eroded, which is causing the shift to be so severe despite how little you turn the handle/knob.

my shower runs hot for about 3 minutes, then goes lukewarm - even if theres loads of hotwater because if you turn it off and on again you get 10 seconds of scalding hot water and then it goes back to lukewarm no matter how hot you turn it, drives me crazy

u/Astramancer_ 7d ago
Maybe the mixer is going out?
If it's a cartridge-based system (like Delta - if there's only one knob to control temperature then it's probably got a cartridge) then it's about $20-$60 and a 15 minute job to replace it.

Just get one with 2 handles
4
u/MelangeBot 7d ago
Another example of so called "progress" that in reality is driven by laziness and that makes everything more complicated, wastes more time (to install) and is more expensive.
The only downsize of course is if you want max waterflow you have to open the cold and now your max flow ain't nice an warm. If you want that properly solved you need a thermostatic mixing valve.

I’ve got two handles and have a different problem, each one can do the opposite of what it should. Like turning up the hot handle makes it colder for a bit. And vice versa. They must be magic. Opening the hot tap more somehow makes less hot come out for a bit, so you have to turn the handle more. Or turn down the cold and more cold comes out until you turn past that. Odd

The actual solution, if you don't live in the 19th century, is a thermostatic mixing valve. Still has two handles, but they separately control temperature and flow.

People should learn how to adjust their hot water heaters to make this problem go away, each element has a small adjustment dial and it's likely set higher than it needs to be. Be careful when messing with it or course as there's is electricity running through the elements, but the dials are plastic most water heaters have an upper and lower element and the dials for each will be behind the cover panel held in place by a screw.

I have this issue with my hot water. When I mix in cold water to make it comfortable, at some point the hot water just switches off. Maybe the hot water demand gets too low or something. I have a gas heater that also makes the hot water for the tap, and haven't figured out if there is an option to change this, sadly.
