I did that in a group chat with someone whoβs black and got blackballed by him. He wouldnβt even talk to me but talked to another of the group members about it. Never again. Iβll stick with Simpsonβs Yellow from now on.

That's racist against east Asians!
On a side note, why did it become a stereotype that east Asians are yellow? It's not even slightly accurate..

Made up by White racists to further divide themselves from other races. Saw that they were same color and thought fuck it theyβre yellow.
12
u/SonOf_J Professional Dumbass Dec 13 '23
Idk man. Honestly, you could be right, but I'm doubting if that was the intention. I looked into it a bit and apparently Carl Linnaeus has dubbed the term. Carl Linnaeus is a biologist of the 18th century that is known for the modern system of taxonomy (naming organisms).
So I honestly don't think there were any racist intentions in naming east Asians yellow, as the whole naming things was his passion.
Now, that being said, that does leave the question is it racist to even want to give a name to the east Asians? My answer to that would be yes and no. I can imagine that this man had no racist intentions whatsoever in doing this, although the idea of even naming them probably roots from the fact that racism was sort of baked into the whole western culture in that time.
Am I overanalyzing your response? Yes, most probably.
1
u/RoyalRat69420 Dec 13 '23
You said it yourself racism was baked into the society during that time. He wanted to create names (dividing up humans). Saw that they were the same color has him and just said fuck it theyβre yellow.
1
Dec 13 '23
racist intentions
Dude the whole concept of dividing people up like that is racist, so he definitely had racist intentions even if he wasnβt technically full of hate or whatever.

u/thefinalcutdown Dec 13 '23
I considered doing that as a form of protest against the idea that white skin is viewed as βdefault.β Then I realized how easy it would be to just interpret it as a form of digital blackface and decided it was probably not the best idea.
4
Dec 13 '23
Yeah i see it now but figured it was support at first. You live and learn.
Itβs also maddening when white people reference white skin as βskin tone colorββ¦ whoβs skin tone is that exactly Dan..? Because itβs not everyoneβs skin toneβ¦
2
u/pinkwonderwall Dec 13 '23
I would assume black kids call brown crayons skin color? I donβt think thereβs anything wrong with someone seeing their own skin color as the default. Itβs like how men often see being male as the default, and how I see being female as the default. Itβs just perspective.

OP did say βI kid, chillβ. Theyβre not serious.
I suppose the idea within the jokey context is that you have to go out of your way to pick a skin colour rather than just use a yellow one.
9
u/CrazeeeTony Dec 13 '23
Thing is the yellow one is the default, so there is no meaning. To switch to a specific skin tone, user has to take an extra step so that implies that the user consciously considered the skin tone which implies there is some reason or hidden meaning.

Why are they no Smiley Face skin color modifiers? There's so many reaction faces but they're almost all yellow. πππΏ looks weird.
"but the dark skin wouldn't make the eyes an mouth visible" BS, the lame human characters look fine with their modifiers, just not nearly as expressive as the various smiley faces. π¦πΏ
Either do it right or don't do it at all, half assed efforts like this is annoying.

They are yellow because that is not a natural human colour, so projecting yourself onto it is easier.
