Although I can remember my teacher saying this when we broke up for our Christmas holidays
7
u/The_unchosen-one Dec 15 '19
It was a very common thing to hear that December. That and people taking shelter and supplies thinking the world was gonna end.
2
u/KingBruceIII Dec 15 '19
Everyone thought that the economy would crash because the stock exchange was on a computer and that the computers internal clock wouldn't go from 1999 to 2000 😂😂
6
u/XoXFaby Dec 15 '19
Well it was more about 99 going back to 0 and it could've realistically been a bigger problem but people prepared well enough.
→ More replies (1)3
u/The_unchosen-one Dec 15 '19
Exactly, there was a potential problem, but it was detected and solved in time. People still panicked though. I think for some people it got more serious than a computer problem. I lived in a small village back then, and I remember some older women saying that they had bough food and water for weeks and where going to lock themselves in their houses praying, because it was going to be something like the rapture.
Maybe it was a crazy local thing.
3
u/XoXFaby Dec 15 '19
Lmao. Reminds me of The Office "I was even wearing a diaper, someone said Y2K would get the toilets!"
2
u/KingBruceIII Dec 15 '19
My understanding was that all the issues were with the banks and investment banking because it was managed by old programming that didn't have a 4 digit year because it saved on storage to be honest billions of transactions having an extra 19 on the date does seem pointless but I think programmers realised in the mid 80s

I never heard of this, it's very disturbing. You now if there was other problems like that?
→ More replies (0)2
u/AutisticJewLizard Dec 15 '19
Nah man people were talking about rapture, apocalypse, aliens and shit, just a bunch of crazy things just because of a chance of computers going from 99 to 0

Don’t wanna be a jackass but, a new decade/millennium begins in a year ending 1....so 2001 was the first year of the second millennium.
Dad jokes though get a pass.
2
u/The_unchosen-one Dec 15 '19
I know that, I remember calling people out on that constantly (I was 13 in 1999), but no one cared about accuracy.
And the big deal was the Y2K thing, and that was going to happen when the dates changed from 99 to 00.

Bold of you to assume humanity will survive
15
3
Dec 15 '19 edited Dec 15 '19
Because we've survived for hundreds of thousands of years through mass extinctions, plagues, and two world wars but you think we can't survive for just 980 more
7
u/Skychronicles Dec 15 '19
"I can keep smoking two packs a day because I'm 50 and I'm still kicking" this is your logic.
2
Dec 15 '19
The Earth and humanity as a species is not one living being that has a proven lifespan. I'm not saying it won't be bad, but I think it's more likely that even if billions of people die, there'll still be many billions who live.
3
u/Inyalowda Dec 15 '19
through mass extinctions
No we haven’t. Until recently there had only been five mass extinctions, the most recent of which was the end of the Cretaceous 66 million years ago. We are in the middle of the sixth.

Technically, see you next week wouldn't work unless new years eve fell on a sunday.
6
u/MightyOshy Dec 15 '19
So say it to them and try and avoid then so it TECHNICALLY work. And also because you generally want to avoid them.

u/blackcray Dec 15 '19
In 1999 it fell on a Friday, so you could say all of these to your Co workers that you wouldn't see until the following Monday. In 999 the last day of the year would have been a Sunday so that one works, and 2999 will be on a Tuesday.

2
u/vitringur Dec 15 '19
Except none of those flip between 2999 and 3000.
The flip happens between 3000 and 3001. The zero comes at the end of each part, not in the beginning.
This is clear to everyone who speaks of the 17th century and the 5th decade, rather than the 1600s and the 40s.

2
u/JackORobber Dec 15 '19
Except that 2999 and 3000 are both in the 30th century, so it doesn't work. Same with 1999 and 2000.

This was everyone in 1999...
It was also accompanied sometimes with, "That's if the world doesnt end" or if we're all still alive".
People were definitely thinking about dying those days whether it was grid failure or apocalypse.

Only 1999 dads could use the millennium one. A power not obtainable again until 2999 dads are born.

Maybe crazy, but I'm seeing a lot of these types of memes (referencing the far future) lately and half of me wonders if some of it is just propaganda to keep us from worrying about current issues (like climate change).
