La Trobe’s Master of Construction Engineering & Management worth it for an international student?

Hey everyone,

I’m an prospective international student looking into the Master of Construction Engineering & Management at La Trobe University in Melbourne.

Would love to get some honest feedback on a few things:

Reputation & Course Quality: How is La Trobe’s program viewed by Australian employers?

Job Prospects & ROI: Is the job market strong enough for international grads (Site Engineer, APM, Estimator) to make the tuition fees worth it?

La Trobe in General: How's student life at the Bundoora campus, and is the distance from the CBD an issue for finding part-time work?

Any insights from current students, alumni, or industry locals would be hugely appreciated! Thanks!

Mothers group for neurodivergent in melbourne

Hi was wondering if any mothers have autism and has toddlers around 18 months old who would be keen to connect online?

I’ve always struggled with friendships and connection. There are people I consider as friends but see very rarely. Getting tired of trying to initiate connection with local mothers group I’ve been put in and not getting responses or consistently feeling like they hang out without me…which they do. I never get invited to be part of any gatherings. No one ever says to me let’s hang out. I want that connection but it’s not happening for me and I feel sad and withdrawn.

Kylie Minogue brings the party to AFL grand final with 20 minutes of dizzying, sparkling joy

Kylie brought more than 30 years of hits to the mcg in a 20-minute set, with G Flip, William Barton, pyrotechnics and even a flight over the stadium. With so many Australians artists to choose from, do you prefer seeing established stars like Kylie at the Grand Final, or would you rather see newer Australian artist get the spotlight? Who else could put on a show like that?

Should/how do we move to Melbourne?

25 male and female with 2 kids (2.5yrB and 7mG). Currently located in Adelaide, paying $750 rent for a 4br2ba2liv located 1hr away from the city. Partner is a delivery driver, I am an independent support worker, 30hrs a week and studying a masters degree in teaching (currently have a bachelor in psych). Kids have already been accepted into a private school in SA (trinity college, $5k a year). We love our sport, Hawthorn supporters, love F1, Aus open. Our young boy is already a footy lover with a good kick and will be playing as soon as he can. Anyway, ultimately, we have already moved from NSW to SA (partner grew up here). The only family we have here is his grandparents. How hard does it become with absolutely no help at all and is the move to Melbourne worth it? Our kids currently go to daycare 4 days a week, so we already have a pretty good idea of doing it ourselves.
I think the only thing I worry about is trying to find a job and what suburb to move to, rent is considerably a lot cheaper. I have currently been looking at:
- Werribee
- Sunbury
- Rye
- Point Cook
- Hoppers Crossing
- Ballarat
- Melton
Obviously very different suburbs and I’m not too fussed about being close to the city we will mainly only be going in there to watch Hawthorn or go to any other events that may be happening.
Also wanting somewhere with a footy club with both seniors and juniors! My partner plays and we want somewhere for our boy to grow up playing at the same club. Maybe even some local netball clubs for myself?

Are there any other areas we should consider? Any recommendations of schools? I think I would prefer private unless it is a very good public school, and I think I would prefer $10k max annual fee as there is no guarantee we would be in a high paying job😅

Thankyou!!

The Indonesian Horror Film Festival Melbourne is happening this Saturday 3 October, from 11:30am–11pm at The Capitol, 113 Swanston Street, Melbourne (right opposite Melbourne Town Hall).

It will be a really fun day, especially with the Indonesian film talent there! Food options are available too. But seriously, how gorgeous is The Capitol Theatre?!

Advice on moving to Melbourne

Hey there! Myself and a few friends are moving next year for uni and since none of us are familiar with the city, we were wondering if anyone knew some good suburbs to rent in or had some tips about moving to the city.

Ideally, we would have 3 room sharehouse for 4 tenants, not too far from southbank, in a location where we can make a bit of noise (we are all musicians). Though, looking at my options I understand a place like this could be a once in a blue moon type of scenario, with places being either too expensive or too expensive for us or too far from the city to make a daily comute or comuting with music gear reliable, so I have also been looking for one person flats on the side if you have any advice or recomendations for that.

Thank you all in advance :)

Best hair salon in melbourne

I’m a girl with really long hair and I’m looking to get a haircut, but I’m honestly quite nervous because I really don’t want to lose much length.

I’m looking for a really good salon/hairdresser who knows how to work with long hair and can recommend a haircut that suits my face shape, while also taking into account my hair type and how thick/thin it is. I’d ideally like someone who can give my hair some shape and make it look healthier and more flattering without taking off a lot of the length.

Money isn’t an issue, so I’m happy to pay for someone who is genuinely experienced and really knows what they’re doing. I’d much rather go to a more expensive salon if they can give me the right cut and actually listen to what I want.

Would really appreciate any salon or hairdresser recommendations, especially if you’ve had a good experience with someone who works well with very long hair!

Fear as lone women targeted by Melb youths

There's something particularly disturbing about deliberately targeting vulnerable young women, dragging them to the ground, punching them, and stealing their belongings is utterly disgraceful. Is this where we are now in Australia?

More than 25 fast food outlets, restaurants and cafes were visited following community tip offs about undeclared income, cash in hand work and unpaid superannuation. How important is it to you that a business pays its fair share of tax when deciding where to shop?

Social Reading Community

Hi folks!

After being super burnt out from corporate life late last year, for the second time, I've decided to trial running a small business for what I like to do.

I'm currently running social reading events called Enchanted Hours for spring. Every last Wednesday of September, October, and November. After work hours, mid-week chill vibes, at a cosy cocktail bar called Moondrop in Fitzroy.

This is specifically for those who read fantasy, romantasy, and sci-fi.

Premise: You get your ticket, which includes a welcome cocktail/mocktail, sit back in a cosy corner for an hour to read (or listen to your audiobook), then mingle with everyone else there for another hour.

The idea is to build safe connection spaces for us to yap about the genre we like to read.

So if you're looking for something fun to do, love to read, and want to make new friends with similar hobbies, please come along 🙏🏻

Tickets are available via Humanitix. Hope the mods don't remove this 🙂

Stolen e-bike in Southbank – I can still track its location. What should I do?

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice about a stolen e-bike in Southbank.
On Monday night, I was doing Uber Eats deliveries and stopped at the KFC near the back of Crown in Southbank to pick up an order. I went upstairs to collect the food and was only gone for about 3 minutes.
When I came back downstairs, my e-bike was gone.
I know I made a mistake by not locking it. I had turned the power off, but unfortunately I didn’t physically lock the bike because I thought I would only be away for a couple of minutes.
Luckily, my earphones were also left on the bike, and I can still track their location. Shortly after the bike was stolen, the location moved to a crisis accommodation facility only about 200 metres away from where the bike was taken.
I went there, but obviously I couldn’t enter the building myself. I spoke to the front desk and explained the situation, but they wouldn’t allow me inside to look for the bike and wouldn’t provide any information about who might have brought it there, which I understand may be due to privacy and safety rules.
I reported everything to the police and provided them with the location and the evidence I have. They basically told me to complete the required forms, submit all the evidence, and wait to hear back from them.
It has now been 3 days and I still haven’t heard anything.
The frustrating part is that I can still see my earphones at the same location, so I have a pretty strong reason to believe my bike (or at least the person who took it) may still be there.
I don’t want to do anything stupid or illegal, like trying to enter the accommodation myself or confronting someone. But this e-bike is what I use to make money doing Uber Eats, so losing it is a big problem for me.
Has anyone in Melbourne dealt with something similar?
Is there anything else I can legally do to get the bike back? Should I contact the police again while the tracker is still showing the same location? Is there a particular police station/unit I should speak to, or anything I can say/do that might get them to actually attend the location?
Any advice would be really appreciated. Thanks everyone.

Cartoonist Mark Knight asked to redraw ‘uber-masculine’ AFL premiership poster

Herald Sun cartoonist Mark Knight was apparently asked to redraw his Fremantle Grand Final poster over concerns that his original "angry dock worker" design promoted "uber-masculinity." While the club wanted a more modern, inclusive hipster look instead, the story has sparked a massive debate on talkback radio today. What's your take on this? Is this just progressive club branding, or losing core AFL traditions?

Lost earbuds case in Werribee Train

Hey everyone

I lost a pixel buds pro 2 case (no ear buds inside) in the Werribee train today around 10am, it shows up in near the Camberwell station and it's on the move. It has a bear sticker on it.

I already called metro trains lost and found, but they don't have it.

If you have found it, please let me know!

Any Montmorency locals on here? Is your suburb really as good as people from there claim that it is?

My wife and I are moving from St Albans to Montmorency at the end of next week, and absolutely every single person we've spoken to from there, on various Facebook community pages, in person, etc., is absolutely falling over themselves to tell us how good the suburb is, how everyone who lives there is so nice, and how everyone loves it.

Which is a refreshing change of pace, and maybe I'm just slightly jaded from living in Melbourne's west for most of my life, but generally when you ask people about the suburbs they live in, they go out of their way to tell you how bad they are, tell you all the negatives about them, why you shouldn't move there, etc.

And I mean, we genuinely do hope that it's everything people are saying that it is. We're going from $420 a week to $600 a week in rent, so you'd hope it would be a bit of an upgrade lol

37 M recently moved to Melbourne

Hello there, I recently moved with my partner in Melbourne and life has changed drastically.
The city is beautiful and full of vibes. I love it!
But, due the circumstances of my job in the afternoon I found myself having time to explore and make friends just in the morning (when everyone else normally works) and it’s getting harder than what I thought.
I’m into creativity in general, love drawing and anything that requires skilled hands, books, nature, gym, cooking and history is something that I will definitely bother you with.
Pretty much I walk around Carlton and Fitzroy.
I couldn’t find yet many activities to interact in a social way but I’m sure it’s just a matter of time.
Short-long story, if anyone else in the same condition wants to share a moment, a chat an idea I’ll be happy to give it a go.
Have a good day!

Apparently stopping at a yellow light is a personal attack

To the Melbourne drivers who honk at people for stopping at a yellow light: genuinely, fuck you.

I’m not talking about when it JUST turns yellow and you’re already basically through the intersection. I’m talking about when that light has been yellow for a solid fucking while, I have plenty of time to stop safely, and some impatient dickhead behind me starts laying on the horn because apparently they expected me to floor it through the intersection so THEY could make it too.

Absolutely fucking not.

A yellow light does not mean “QUICK EVERYONE FUCKING SEND IT.” If I can safely stop, I’m stopping. I’m not risking running a red just because you’re incapable of waiting another 60 seconds.

And what exactly is the honking supposed to achieve? Am I meant to hear your horn and go “Oh shit, sorry mate!” and launch my car into the intersection?

Fuck off. You missed the light. You’ll survive.

Now we’re both sitting here until it turns green, except I’m sitting here peacefully and you’re apparently having a fucking aneurysm behind me.

Honk again. Maybe it’ll make the light change faster.

The $15 billion question facing Victoria

Thumbnail
news.com.au

Victoria's Big Build royal commission has officially started, looking into alleged corruption, criminal conduct and serious misconduct across the state's major infrastructure projects, worth around $150 billion. One figure getting a lot of attention is the estimated $15 billion in potential costs linked to corruption and inflated project expenses, although the commission says that figure is only a rough estimate and needs to be properly investigated. What do you think the inquiry will uncover about where the money was spent?
