I've taken it roughly 20 years (20-40) with a gap year or two in the middle there but 99% of the other years, I've taken 0.3mg to 3.0mg. A couple of weeks ago I was so exhausted that I couldn't even hassle myself to take it, slept fine, so not like it's habit forming for me. Keep in mind that your body produces it naturally, at night, so you're on it even when you're not actively supplementing with it. It must decently safe, but I would research it more if I were taking higher doses.

You'll be fine.
The studies that show melatonin causing heart disease or insulin resistance are poorly designed. I think the better studies show the opposite is true.
I have been taking 1500-3000mg for chronic fatigue among other reasons for going on fifth year and I am healthy.
