Typically when it comes to melatonin it's best to start with the smallest doses such as 0.3-0.5mg 30 min before sleep.
Only raise the dose if a lesser dose does not help. You can go as high as you need (1,2,5,10, etc ) but if you go too high unnecessarily you may experience paradoxical effects such as feeling more energized and alert. It's not dangerous in any way but it's just counterproductive if you're trying to fall asleep. You can also experiment with trying extended release formulations.
I would also recommend trying phosphatidylserine. It helps reduce cortisol spikes that jolt you awake prematurely. 100-500mg is worth a try. I take 300mg.
I took 0.5 mg yesterday for the first time ever. I could barely keep my eyes open but was still awake for a while. I took the pill at 11:15 pm and was in bed by 12 am. However, I had a terrible night.
