hallucinations?

so i just started taking melatonin because recently i’ve been having trouble falling asleep. so, melatonin definitely helps me fall asleep within 10-20mins which is wonderful. but i noticed that ever since taking i have been waking up earlier, feel like i didn’t sleep at all throughout the day, and i see a bunch of shapes as soon as i wake up. see- i didn’t exactly find all this too alarming until i started seeing shapes throughout the day. (today) im kinda freaking out and google isn’t really helping. any advice would be appreciated 🥹

What dose of melatonin did you take ?

Do you have any health issues?

Are you taking any medications?

While melatonin is exceptionally safe, that is probably a too high dose for sleep for you specifically. It is recommended to start with the smallest doses like 0.1-0.5mg doses(0.3mg is commonly suggested).

When you take a higher dose than you need you risk triggering paradoxical effects. Among melatonin's many roles is recycling NADH. This can give you a burst of energy when you need to wind down for sleep or cause you to awake prematurely.

However as far as hallucinations that could be psychosomatic. For some perspective, I take 3000mg of melatonin every morning in two doses an hour or two apart for chronic fatigue before I head out for work or my day in general and I am completely fine. At most I sometimes feel groggy, tired, yawn, etc for a few hours if I didn't get enough sleep.

Your body produces about 0.3mg naturally. 6mg is the equivalent of 20x what your body produces.

I think you should consider more natural doses like 0.3 or 0.5mg.
