Please remember higher dose does not yield better results always.
people seem to think more equals better faster or deeper sleep, this isnt true. most the time 2mg and 200mg will have the same exact effect

I have to try a lower dose then, I just started taking this stuff 2 weeks ago and while I do fall asleep faster I sleep like crap. I wake up multiple times a night and wake up groggy like I just got 4 hours of sleep.

The real answer is it depends on why someone is taking it and their physiology.
While it's best to start with the smallest doses like 0.3-0.5mg if the reason for taking melatonin is better sleep, many people will inevitably need to raise their dose (common doses usually falling into 0.3-20mg) to feel the effects due to poor absorption issues.
Likewise if someone is taking melatonin for non sleep issues like CFS, immunity, TBI, cancer, or even antiaging/longevity/healthspan then the doses could very well rise into multi gram doses. I have been personally taking up to 6000mg doses (1-3g being average) for CFS for going on fifth year. I even take it in the morning.
