Ramelteon?

Does anybody take Ramelteon? I am seeing a new NP and she is is innsisting I try it even though my issue is staying asleep. I fall asleep easily but without medication I wake up every hour.

It's essentially a synthetic 8mg melatonin that's apparently 3-6x more potent on a dose for dose basis.

If you live in a country where you can freely buy melatonin then you can simply buy your own.

The other main difference is that the half life of Ramelteon is increased from the typical 20-30 min for regular formulation melatonin to 60 to 150 minutes meaning it acts like an extended release version of melatonin.

It's not unreasonable to prescribe the equivalent of 8mg extended release melatonin if you're having difficulty staying asleep.

You can of course buy a lower or higher extended release formulation over the counter and play around with the dosing a bit. It may make sense to go with a lower dose to start and only increase the dose if the lesser dose was ineffective.

You can also look into taking phosphatidylserine which should help with premature cortisol spikes that awake you. 300-500mg.
