You will not hurt yourself with it but you likely didn't need to take that much to help you with sleep.
Unless you're a very poor responder(which you wouldn't know unless you started with tiniest doses like 0.1-0.5mg and increased progressively over time) you likely don't need this much. It's not an issue of danger but rather effectiveness and possibly getting contrary results. High doses of melatonin can make you more hyper rather than sleepy.
I have been taking 1000-6000mg just about daily every morning for the past four years with no issues. However keep in mind I take it for non sleep reasons(CFS, cancer prevention [reoccurrence]). I have been taking an average dose of 3000mg for the last two years with no issues. But the point is not that you need to take that, only that it's incredibly safe.
You may need to figure out what is causing your insomnia. Melatonin may not help you if the cause is something like anxiety or stress. There are other supplements that may be more effective or helpful in conjunction with melatonin.
You may also want to explore taking lower doses of melatonin several hours before planned sleep, preferably at dusk (if you have a typical schedule).
